As most of you know, I have been having some problems with my back lately. I went to see my PCP yesterday. I have been having problems for quite some time now. I was told yesterday that there was a couple of different approaches I could take in taking care of this problem involving a pinched nerve. I will hear form the doctor next week, but I am starting to get scared about what he is going to tell me. I know that one solution involves additional medication of a different type, one involves massive doses of prednisone in order to get the inflammation down. I am not sure what the third involves, but I am really worried. Ideas??

I do not have any advice, but I will be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that you and your doctor will be able to chose the plan that is best for you and it results in you feeling much better. Many hugs and wishes for renewal are being sent your way on the wings of hope.

Hi Gregg,

Sorry to hear you are still having problems. I was wondering if they have told you what the other solutions might be?

I had very large doses of prednisone and later on, a cortisone shot in the back when I herniated my L4/L5 disk which pressed on my sciatic nerve. Lots of fun that was. It took a while but everything seems to be working fine now. I wish the same for you as well.

I am saying many prayers for you in hopes you will be rid of this problem very soon. I know you're a guy that doesn't like to be held down like this.

Wishing you all the best. I hope they fix you up better than ever.

Meagan :-)

Gregg, Have you considered yoga? I know it sounds crazy, but about 3 years ago my back got so screwed up with nerve damage and tight muscles that I could hardly sleep. I started doing Iyengar (more medicinal) Yoga and within a few weeks I was a new person. I kept doing it for about a year and love it!

Got diagnosis from doctor on Friday. Xray showed bone calcification squeezing the nerve on right side only at C-6 - C-7 and C-7 - T-1. I found it painful to do some of the stretches chiropractor gave me, so I am going to see what else he can come up with today.

Dear Gregg:

I am sorry you're having back issues, and prayers are coming your way my friend. You know, I am going to echo Amy on the yoga am going to add "and Pilates". Am a big believer. It strengthens the core muscles, and I am almost 100% certain that the stretches that your chiropractor is showing you are core work stretches to strengthen the core.

I know it sounds like a girly-thing to do (LOL) but I suggest giving it a whirl on exercise tv, for example. Apparently, many NFL players are turning to Pilates. And guess what? It is super, super tough. LOL.

All the best, and I am thinking of you!

Thanks, folks. At this point, I am seriously considering a cortisone shot, as it will not affect my blood sugar. I like that better than more drugs or surgery.

sorry to hear this Gregg. will keep you in my prayers.
Have you tried consulting an acupuncturist> I know some friends and family who had worst problems and acupuncture helped them a lot. No medications! I have a cousin who is an acupuncturist but his practice is in the Philippines. I have seen how many people he has helped.
I am sure you will find someone here in US- get someone whose training was in China, it is the real thing!

Hugs and take care

I go today to get another x-ray. This time, they are to x-ray my shoulder. We will see if my problem really is a popped rib or not. I have had problems with this shoulder for at least a year, if not more.

Cisco:

I am so sorry that you are having back trouble. My mom is dealing with that stuff too. In fact, that is one of the reasons that I have been away so long. I have been going to dr. appts. with my parents. She has been diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis. It sounds like what you described. It's a degenerative disease that causes a narrowing in the spinal canal causing everything from pinched nerves to bulging discs. She first started having trouble with swelling in her legs and feet. Then she had the back pain. She also gets terrible leg and toe cramps - probably pinched nerves.

Anyways...she has been to a neurosurgeon. He has recommended physical therapy and if that doesn't work - surgery. We are all praying that the PT works!!

She has tried pain meds, but not a cortisone shot. I think I would opt for cortisone instead of the prednisone. At least try it before thinking about
surgery. I have read that surgery can be tough.

I will most definitely keep you in my prayers!

Thank you for welcoming me back. It is good to be back.

God Bless!

Karen, so far, I don't have any bulging discs. The only thing I appear to have is a pinched nerve and possibly a popped rib. I know better than to opt for surgery before doing anything else that I can to avoid it, if possible. So far, chiropractor has not done much good, other than to lighten the load on my back by removing part of the contents of my wallet.

Cisco:

Getting rid of that wallet just might do the trick!! LOL!!

My Mom had her PT today. We'll see how it goes.

I agree that you should do everything possible to avoid surgery!!! Just keep trying things until you feel better. I will keep praying!!

God Bless!

Doesn't the old adage go,"Watch what you wish for..." They are trying to get me in to see a neurologist now! Ah, hell, maybe they can do me some good.

Hey Gregg,
Try Rodney Yee's Yoga for Back dvd. It works. My husband injured his back years ago & it looked like he would never ride his bike again. Years later he is still riding & using the stretch moves found in this dvd. It's worth looking into. Each time he doesn't keep doing it he can tell. Be patient with it.

Last Wednesday I went to the neurologist. They did some testing, electrically and with sticking pins in me and some with just the pins. The doctor determined that I needed an MRI, scheduled for Thursday this week. After that is done, I am sure they will have an idea of the road that I must travel to get back into good shape. Thank you all for your kindness and concern.
