I think that this is a relevant question here as we all have to watch how much and what kind of carbohydrates we consume. Yes, I do eat some that are not complex, but for me, as long as I am having those along with slower burning ones and/or protein, it minimizes the impact on my blood sugar, which is something we all should do. Here is a list of the complex carbohydrates that I do eat very regularly: Oatmeal Whole Grain Bread-I never eat white bread of any kind Grains Potatoes/Sweet Potatoes-Either kind if I will be working out or just plain working Vegetables (I use mainly for fiber, not energy) Pasta-Whole Wheat Only!! Rice-Brown only, usually Basmati

I try to get most of my carbs from beans and a small amount of grains' On my list are: oatmeal, rye, sweet potatoes( not enough), Brown rice (small amounts) Just received my A1 c results and there was a big improvement. If I keep on doing what I am doing, i will be back down to my target number soon. Whenever I consume my carbs in larger amounts, i will work out right afterward. My favorite snack are veggies with hummus. when I add too many carbs, I feel awful because my glucose will go out of range.

Well, apparently, you are much more sensitive to it than I am, although I also have to watch what carbohydrates I consume. This is usually true if I eat the faster burning carbohydrates like potatoes or white pasta. If I eat that, I guarantee that I had BETTER have a big project that I can do almost immediately. That is NOT true if I am eating slow burners. I could take it easy then.

I can eat that stuff, but I have to have something major happening before I can get away with it.

Having origins in India, my weakness is rice; but I try to keep the amount that I eat limited, substituting with whole grain Indian breads. Other sources of complex carbohydrates for me are fruits and vegetables.

In the past I was struggling to keep the yummies to a limit. What I tell myself is, "I can always have more later" So far my desire to overdo has greatly diminished and I am proud to say I am doing well. I also believe if I eat too many carbs this helps to increase the congestion i have due to cf. I am much better of when I adhere to a gluten free diet. My new snack that I love is ONE Ryvita rye cracker with olive oil, garlic and hummus. This snack is loaded with healthier carbs. When my husband buys dates, I use to eat more than one and this drove my glucose up quickly. If I eat just one, I am ok. If I ate the typical american diet, I would probably have full blown diabetes. My A1c is now 5.8 and last year I was 5.4 I got carried away this past year and now I am back on track. I hope to get back down to 5.4 in the next three months by following my current eating plan along with my exercise routine. GREAT thread!

We all must learn what will work best for us. What works for one person will not necessarily work for someone else. My hope in starting this thread was to give others some ideas and options for what they might try. I know that A1c and blood sugar is important which is the reason for the thread.

Thank you for starting this thread it is very important to watch what we eat. We can have "bad" moments but it is good to think about what is good to eat for our bodies because we all want to stay well and eating well helps keep us well. So thank you again.
