My name is R.J. and I donated my kidney to my older cousin, Brian, when I was 19.

Brian was born with conjunctive heart failure and eventually had a heart transplant when he was 18. He lived in varying degrees of happiness and health for the next ten years and then was diagnosed with kidney failure. I was a freshman in college when I heard the news and it seemed like a no-brianer. Brian had had such a rough time since he was born and I had never had any type of surgery. He was my older cousin by almost 10 years and I idolized him. I had to help him out.
It's now been four years since the transplant and Brian is thriving in a new job and grad school in Seattle. The whole experience was so significant and emotional to me that I wrote a screenplay inspired by it (I went to school for videography and screenwriting). I've spent more than a year working on making this movie and (with the help of talented family and friends) I'm weeks away from finishing. Feel free to check out our movie at www.kidneybeansmovie.com! It's remarkable how significant a transplant can be for both donor and donee.
