In honor of my transplant anniversary on 10/26/05, I felt it a special need to convey my feelings to my Cardiologist Dr. Pinney but not for him I would not have gotten to transplant and probably would not be here today. I gave him a gift of a porcelain Tin Man, I feel personally connected to the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. And here is the poem I sent with it. The Tin Man went looking for a heart in the Land of Oz He found the Wizard , but, alas no Heart. I went looking too and though my journey was long, I found Mt Sinai, my Land of Oz And you…..my Wizard And at long last a heart was to be found So in my new Heart My Donor, Mt. Sinai and you will forever be. Rosemarie Sabella Heart Transplant 10/26/05

Rosemarie, Very cute poem. I can relate to your closeness to your Cardiologist Dr Pinney. I feel the very same way about my various heart doctors. Very happy to see another heart recipient on this wonderful website. Dr "Mandi" has been my Cardiologist since 1985 and he's the one who suggested my heart transplant in 1991. Not only is he a wonderful doctor, he has a great sense of humor, as seen here at a party several years ago at the local hospital. He is originally from India. Ol' Bob

I am very interested in organ donation, I became an organ donor on the anniv of my transplant, as did my family and several of my friends. I am going to do a local radio show in January, any input you could offer I would appreciate, I don't want to sound like an idiot You also will be able to listen online if you are interested. I really need to get up to speed on this subject. Thanks. Roe

Roe, good luck with the radio show in January. I think if you speak from the heart (no pun intended) you will get the message across just fine. I have been an organ donor since one of my best friends in high school was killed in an auto accident, he made it known to his parents that he wanted to be a donor and they fulfilled his wishes. That act alone made me and a bunch of other people decide to do the same and become an organ donor. I think if you were to mention how much of a difference it can make in one's live to be given the gift of life and how it gives them a chance to watch their children grow, watch relationships blossom and improves the quality of our lives, it will get the message across. As you know, there are way too many in need of organs and not enough supply. I would be interested in hearing this online, let us know the link when you have the details....and Good Luck!

Hi, Just wanted to share with you a lovely evening in NY to see the new Shrek Musical, my daughter Dominique is 20, she is developmentally disabled, but she does very well . We had great seats and it was an amazing show. It was wonderful to be in the city on a beautiful night. NYC will always rock. I have spent many nights in the city but always at the the hospital, it was wonderful to be there, healthy and walking about with my daughter. I am truly blessed.

October 26, 2005 was the truly the most life changing experience of my life. I have been chronically ill for most of my life. At 32, I was finally diagnosed with scleroderma and spent the next 17 years in and out of hospitals with infections and surgery to control the most painful aspects of the disease, as you know it is an incurable situation In July of 1998 I had my first heart attack, I was driving over the Tappan Zee Bridge into Queens to visit my Dad, I didn't know at the time I was having one, my daughter and niece were in the car with and I continued on my way. I never reported this to my Doctor, I did not want be hospitalized again. VERY DUMB on my part. In March of 1999 I had my first documented heart attack , even then I did not react quickly, I took aspirin, had a cup of tea and then had my husband drive me to the ER. Let me tell you, when every one starts running you know you are in deep trouble. That was followed by many hospitalizations due to congestive heart failure, after another heart attack I was scheduled for open heart surgery in 2001. This put a little band aid on the heart issues. In 2004 another artery closed and I had another procedure to put a stent in the artery to open it, well I began to bleed internally and my kidneys were literally being crushed, yes they were running around again the Recovery room Doctor was cursing up a storm, demanding the cardiologist not go to the next procedure but come to the recovery room. I believe in angels, and they were all around I remember saying to my mom who passed on years before, no mommy it is not time my little girl needs me. My daughter Dominique is developmentally disabled. Thankfully I made it through. In 2005 I had an ICD implanted that is a difibulator that will shock the heat to keep it in rhythm. Well when that goes off it is like being shot. Incidentally the one that was implanted my body was recalled, amazing huh? It was then suggested I have a heart transplant, after being with a transplant team for over year and not being listed. I asked my cardiologist to send me to a different hospital. In February of 2005 I was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, and put in care of Dr. Sean Pinney and his amazing team. Dr Pinney put me on IV medication at home 24/7. In May I was listed on the transplant list with UNOS the central location of all donor information. I had two dry runs and they were now considering implanting another piece of equipment to help my heart function. In October I had a severe infection and was transferred to Mount Sinai, this was the culmination of my life changing experience, a heart came in and I was blessed with life, I was not expected to make it with out this transplant, and I would not have. I had ARVD (ARVD stands for Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia) I disease that typically goes undiagnosed until after death from a massive heart attack. Talk about an amazing life changing experience. I do not know who my donor is but I think about him daily and keep him in "OUR HEART". This will also be posted to Life Stories, Risa suggested in the interim, that I post so you all could read it now. Its been an amazing journey and I am "happy to be here" to share my story. Roe
