My wife is 4 months post Liver transplant and is having severe difficulty remembering things. Her short term memory is very poor and her long term memory is slightly clouded. Prior to the transplant she had some Hepatic encephalopathy with higher levels of ammonia on the brain. Since the transplant it has gotten worse. Has anyone dealt with this problem? Could it be medication induced? She has been asked to see a Nuerologist. Probably will wait until some of her medications are reduced. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I, too, had the encephalopathy brain fog before transplant. Mine went away the day I got the new liver two years ago. Does she still have the high amonia and encephalopathy. The transplant team should be able to address that. Or maybe someone here has had a similar experience.
Hope she gets better with time. Everyone heals differently.

I had minor memory problems pre-transplant. Post-transplant they become more severe. I felt that it was due to the fatigue I had. Around 15 months everything went back to normal. I am now 4+ years and am back to my old self - working 12 hour days.
I talked this over with my hepatologist. He also thought it was related to the fatigue which isn't unusual. I recommend you talk to your doctor.

I have had memory problems as well since my surgery. Not all of the time though. I have been having side effects from the Prograf, with very bad headaches which are constant. When they are at their worst, I definitely have problems in that area.
My meds are currently being tweaked.
Perhaps the pharmacist on your wife's team could take a look at what she is on, and also her blood work results to see if her medications are playing a role.

I still do have some occasional memory problems, but my docs are are also thinking that it is due to stress and fatigue. I think we have to keep in mind that we are post-transplant patients, so we have our limitations.
I sometimes find it amazing how active some of you are living. I have slowed down a lot, probably because of the major surgery and of course, age.
