Has anyone had a continual low WBC from Prograff. My docs thought it was Cellcept and took off of it. I'm now on just Prograf along with 5 mg Prednisone (replaced Cellcept). This is the 3rd time in the last 3 months that my WBC has dropped below 2. Getting very frustrated with the Neupogen therapy! I'm 6 months post transplant. Next step is bone marrow biopsy:-(

Nickchick, I too have experienced low WBC. Mine dropped about six weeks after my transplant. Went all the way down to 1.3! So they stopped the Myfortic and it came up to 1.7. Then they had me reduce the Bactrim, Valcite and Omnicef I was taking. Took about two or three months but now is back up to 2.7. During this time, they sent me to see a Hemotologist who did a bunch of test for different viruses and all were negative. The Hemo doc said with all the antibiotics I take along with the Prograf (all which lower WBC) it may not get any higher than 2.7 - 3.0. I asked about Neupogen and they are all (tx team) against using it unless my ANC drops below .5.

Thanks so much for your reply. I actually didn't have any WBC issues until a few weeks after I was done with the Valcyte & Bactrim. I am due to see a Hemo doc & the team wants me to get a bone marrow biopsy to rule out "anything else". I was informed today that I am being switched to cyclosporine aka Gengraff. I hv had approx 12 shots of neupogen throughout the past 3 months. I asked how can we find out if lowering the Prograf will work or not when they keep shootin me up with that back spasm making serum and was told "we can't". Where did you get ur transplant at? Maybe my doc's should consult with yours! :o

Nickchick, My transplant was done at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Talk to the hemo doc when you go. They are the blood experts! Mine did a bunch of test that check for viruses that can lower the WBC like CMV, EBV, HHV and some others. He also did some test for luekemia and some autoimmune diseases. He said if they all come back negative, which they did thankfully, there is no reason to do a bone marrow biopsy.

Nickchick:

I am sorry to hear that you are having such trouble with your WBC. I had trouble right after transplant. I was taken off of Cellcept and put on Neupogen. That helped. After I was taken off of Valcyte I was able to get off Neupogen. I have been fine since. I am on 5 mg Medrol and Prograf.

I hope that things get straightened out.

God Bless!

My docs were determined that Prograf was not the culprit. I am no longer taking it either so we'll see what happens with the Cyclosporine. Glad to hear they can do testing without having to do the biopsy. Hopefully that will b the case with me as well. What a small world we live in... I was born in St Louis & grew up on the IL side if the river. Was diagnosed with my kidney disease at Cardinal Glennon hospital way back in the 80's. Thanks for your input!

I was also diagnosed with my CKD at Glennon but only mine was around 92-93! Where was your transplant performed?
