I donated a kidney to my wife just shy of two weeks ago. My wounds are healing nicely and I have almost no pain now, however, something strange started happening about five days ago. Periodically throughout the day my back will ache right where my kidney used to be. Its like someone punched me in the kidneys (though the pain is not nearly that intense). Its more like a dull ache. Is this just some sort of phantom pain? Are my muscles just trying to adjust back there? |

Kurt, First, Congratulations for donating to your wife. It sounds as if both of you are doing fine. Pain. Remember that cutting was involved in your surgery. Nerves that were formerly intact are not "injured." You should check with your doctor, but I suspect he will confirm that this is where the pain is coming from. In all probability, it will be temporary. But do ask the doctor. The best to both of you. Glad to have you a board TransplantBuddies. Richard

Welcome Kurt! Richard is right in that it might not hurt to call the center to report it. I know a lot of people have talked about feeling a, for lack of a better term, "blank spot" but I never had such a feeling. I do know that my back seemed to bother me more, and I discovered a lot of it was because I was walking kind of hunched over - almost an instinctive response to protect the area. I made an effort to stand taller and walk straighter. I even used a cane for a week when I took daily walks with my husband- it seemed to give me the support to stand taller when walking. Hope you and your wife are doing well and back to normal soon.
