This isn't meant to be rude and may just be a silly question .. but are you 100% sure that it's gout and not something similar (eg pseudogout or something else). As I understand it, the crystals that form in joints for gout are urate based and those that form in pseudogout are calcium based. If it were pseudogout then that might explain the 'normal' urate levels. The treatment for psuedogout, not surprisingly, is to take steroids ... and they seem to work for you (albeit with nasty consequences etc) Also I think you mentioned that sometimes your calcium levels run upper end to high ? I guess the only way to tell for sure is for a doctor to take a sample of the fluid in an affected joint during a flare and have it tested. If it were psuedogout then maybe there is a different way of managing your diet to help avoid it (I don't know tbh .. I've only ever had the horrid normal gout). Not sure if this helps but I guess it's a possible explanation take care Keith |

i kinda figure it probably is regular gout ,as psudogout is normally a knee thing to start with, and colchicine is prescribed for psudogout also. I imagine the lower dose 2 x 500mcg of gout just isn't strong enough for me, and this was probably the worse gout i have ever had. And left it a day before treating so i think you have to nip it in the bud at first twinge otherwise it takes much longer to go. Also i believe colchicine is much slower acting on the inflammation than pred especially at lower doses. But thanks for the input, always good to get another angle on it. |
