Well here I am, feeling like a million bucks having just past my one-year mark on the weekend. For celebration I'm taking my donor (my brother) on a helicopter ride over Toronto. I'm pretty excited about it.

I have to say this first year has really been a breeze, thank God. I feel really lucky avoiding all the things that could go wrong and all of my fears about getting a transplant have so far been for naught. Hope it continues that way. Two non-critical WBC crashes and that's about it.

It also seems I'm one of many March transplantees. I guess people like to get their lives in order in the spring ;)

That is wonderful, and I hope that your celebration with your brother is a very memorable day!!!!!!

I am only going on 7 months, but wanted to ask how low your wbc was at your "crash" and what was done about it at the time.

Blessings!

Hi Heather,

My WBC went down to 3.3. Not much of a crash (I think they get really concerned when WBC is ~ 1).

I had neupogen shots which for some strange reason did not increase my WBC one bit. Lowering cellcept is the standard answer to bringing WBC up slowly, but this also did not bring it up. Normally, neupogen works for people, I guess I'm a weirdo.

In the end my feeling of what actually brought it up was some kind of infection. It caused multiple lymph nodes to become swollen and very shortly after my WBC skyrocketed to 6.8. Who knew infections could be a good thing?!

For the last 4 months my WBC has been ~ 4 to 4.5. I haven't gotten ill and the doc's say it's fine so I haven't worried about it.

Thanks Cruizin, that's interesting because I have been trying to figure this all out as well. My wbc was 3.4 last labs, and when I called my transplant center in Seattle, they said they thought it would come up now that I have dropped the Acylivir and Bactrim. So hopefully next labs will show it, but I must admit, I am just a bit nervous, as I am getting sores in my mouth, and just not very energetic. But then we still have 3-4 feet of snow on the ground. They are going to test for BK virus and cmv next labs as well. Meanwhile, so many people are really sick with flu and pneumonia that I am just kind of isolating myself, which is no problem as an introvert.

Well don't get too worried about it. There's lots of room for it to go down further before it would become a real concern. WBC crashes must be one of the most common post-tx issues. High MPA, viral load, and antibiotics can all be to blame.

What are your neturophil and lympocyte counts?
