Hi, My name is Tony and I'm a transplant recipient. I try to live a normal life (or at least somewhat normal). I'm not perfect in any way, but I'm trying to do my best. I've been through a lot in the past few years and have learned a lot. My main goal in life is to live it to the fullest, and maybe teach a little bit to people in the process. I received a Kidney transplant from my mother in Oct of 2006 after being diagnosed with diabetic kidney disease in 2003. After 2 months in Dec of 2006 I also received a pancreas transplant to treat the diabetes that caused my kidneys to fail. After 3 weeks I experienced rejection of my pancreas and spent 21 days in Johns Hopkins hospital. The next 6 months were a very difficult time. I spent 3 days in the Hospital for every day I spent home because of dehydration. My weight continually decreased from a healthy 120 lbs to 72 as I drank 4+ liters of water per day. I drank water until I vomited and couldn't eat because of the fluid intake. On May 31st 2007 I had my pancreas transplant revised. This meant another surgery and another 4 day stay in Nelson 7 at Hopkins. The surgery was a success and I went home without issues for 11 months. On May 9th 2008, I had planned on spending a day helping my grandfather who was bringing home his wife from a nursing home. I made it 3 miles of the trip to his house, when I was blindsided by a truck that slid through a stopsign into 55 mph traffic. I seem to get a lot of 4 day stays at major hospitals because that is how long I was at University of MD shock trauma. I had both ankles, two of my ribs, my sternum and my nose fractured. My left lung had collapsed, there was torn muscle in my knee, and I spent the better part of 2 months on narcotic pain medications. My transplanted organs were unharmed, but my heart was broken. The wedding we had planned for May 17th had to be postponed and a lot of family members couldn't change their flights that were planned around that day. Some made it back for the September 27th date we chose for the reschedule but some couldn't find it in their affordability. My grandmother, who was to come home from the nursing home, was still able to that day and died of cancer 2 days later. Shock Trauma tested my strength to find out if I would go home for the funeral or to the nursing home my grandmother came from. I proved I could walk, albeit with a walker, on both fractured ankles and a possible ACL tear in my left knee. With all of my injuries, I was still able to make it to my grandmother's funeral. I have learned through every circumstance that came my way, and I'll share what I've found. I may sometimes limp when I walk, shake from anti-rejection medications, have scars from organs that have been trnsplanted into my body, but I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I have my good and bad days, when I wonder why I'm still alive and the only answer I have is that God's grace and mercy are the only reason. I want to live every moment like it is my last, without regret, never waiting to say I'm sorry for anything I have done wrong. All people do wrong things, but forgiveness awaits them if they only ask. I try to take Christ as an example and love everyone, not based on their actions, but that they might see something different. A different love that doesn't come from "what can you do for me?", the true love of God. God doesn't answer if you won't call on him. I have learned one of the hardest lessons of all. God wants you to give him all of your worries, fears, and your sadness. He will turn them around if you ask him to, but when you give them (here's the difficult part) you can't take them back. Leave the past where it was and look at the present as it is "present" a gift to enjoy. I hope anyone that reads this page will understand it and see the depth in it. I try not to wait to do something good for someone because I may never get the chance again. I don't want sympathy, only people to see what has happened in my past so that they might learn from it.

Dear Tony,

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Your words are both powerful and insightful and it brought tears of joy to my eyes. I feel the same way after receiving a liver tx one month ago and only want the rest of my life to be one of service and love, and giving glory to God. I think for most of us, we are truly blessed through our illness because we have been given an opportunity to learn what is really important. Things that used to matter to me no longer carry much value. My needs are always met and I know God loves me and that is enough! I just wanted to thank you for sharing your words of inspiration.

Peace and blessings,
Charon

I'm glad to be able to write this all out. There have been a lot of inspirational messages on here that I've read and many of them bring me to tears. As for faith, One thing really brought me to a realization. My son was 3 yrs old when I had my transplants, and I remember being in tears at the hospital the day of my pancreas transplant as he prayed for me, and the family of my donor. Quite honestly I'm in tears typing it. I remember him looking at me and saying "you're going to be better daddy, I prayed for it." Who would've thought such a small child could teach such a large lesson? I hope it can brighten your day.

Thanks DAP,

I hope it can raise some spirits. I've been through a lot and this is a very watered-down version of my transplant story. Everyone has their bad days, God knows I had my own days that I just wanted to give up and die. I just wanted to encourage anybody who might be having those days. They can't last forever and the days get better as time passes. I update that page often so it gets added to a lot. I'll try to post when I update.

I heard from my attorney today about my accident. It seems he has things almost ready to finish this case. So the medical bills will start getting paid off. I didn't really want a Lawyer to have to handle this but the insurance company wouldn't even accept liability for the first two months until I had a lawyer contact them. Kinda funny how I had to threaten legal action to get anything done. I'll be glad to get all of this over! Now I get to type out journal entries into a summary of Oct through Jan so he can get it done.

Hi Tony,

My heart goes out to you. I read and view PICS on myspace .You have been through the mill and back and you have that positive and sound like one that doesn't give up which is a plus. I understand about feeling like giving up and everyone has days like that at times. You never did that and you're a fighter. You have a wonderful family that supports you, a gorgeous home and I hope things will continue to be good.

It stinks when you have to seek legal actions and take time and energy to get things done. Shame on your insurance company. You had enough to deal with physically and emotionally.

Good luck to you and your family. God be with you and keep you safe.

Hi, Tony:

Thank you for sharing your story and pictures. Here is my story to share with you.

Before my kidney transplant (7 years ago), I could not move my legs, there were bruises everywhere in my body, and I could not walk. At that time, I just keep doing what I could do such as exercise and healthier food. Then I got phone call from transplant center. I was not panic at all when I got the phone call. I was very happy because I know after the transplant I will have brand new life. Here I am.

Right after I got my kidney transplant (I was 42 yrs old), I went to community college for my AS degree in health. After almost 4-year pre and program study, I graduated (I was 47 yrs old then) and got job in the hospital. Now I have a good job and good health insurance.

So, keep doing what you are doing. You are young and you have a bright future ahead of you.

Best wishes,

Got a call on Friday from a local computer shop about an internship position! I'm hoping I can get started working again. The manager said that their business was kind of slow right now, but he'd like me to come in for an interview on Feb 13th at 10 a.m. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying that all goes well!

Christena's Dad- Thanks! I could use some good luck for a change.

Risa- Thanks! It's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks she's gorgeous. I'll make sure I tell her Happy Birthday from you. Maybe I can talk her into joining here. (She's a little on the shy side and thinks this is only for people who have a transplant)

CJ- Where are you from in MD? I'm making it one day at a time. I'm actually still going to school so this is a great opportunity for me. With as much as I've dealt with in the past 2 1/2 years, This is like "cake." It actually seems like a lot of fun to me!

As for my luck... Saturday after a lot of the snow melted, it got cold and froze again. (Nothing like Ice to make life interesting right?) Anyway, I slipped on the ice and jammed my shoulder (The left one from my accident). I'm a little sore today but I can still move it without a ton of pain. I did learn one thing through all of the Physical Therapy-"If it still moves you're in good shape." I guess I'm gonna switch to light exercise for a few days...

I'm having one of my "grumpy days" today. Just one of those days that nothing seems to go right and everything "rubs me the wrong way." I am really trying to have a positive attitude, but I'm losing that battle for the moment. My shoulder is sore today, and it's snowing out, my knee and ankles keep cracking and aching. I used to like snow, but since my accident, cold weather and wet weather seem to make me achy. Oh well, I can't win every battle. At least I'm not losing the war.

I work as an intern until I prove myself to them, and a full-time position opens up. My Net+ classes start in 2 weeks in the evenings. I think I'm getting somewhere close to a normal life again!

We went to Winchester for the weekend and stayed in a hotel. Saturday we drove 45 minutes to Luray caverns and took a tour. It was a really nice/needed break. That is the first time we have been away (just her and I) in more than two years. We came home last night, and today I started the internship. It seems like everything good hit all at once and I'm hoping things continue to go this way. I'll post some pictures in a few minutes when I get them uploaded from the camera.

Hey Tony,

I was just checking in to see how the internship is going. You seemed pretty excited and I am hoping it is everything you were looking for and more. I like the pictures of you guys at the caverns. I live less than an hour from Mammoth Cave National Park and my kids loved to go there in the summers to check out the many different caverns. I also had the unusual experience of taking my Boy Scout troop to a cave in Indiana where we actually stayed the night. A bit chilly -- but the boys had fun.

Hope everything is going well and that you have a great day.

Everything has been ok with the internship. I have been learning a lot and I started my Network+ class last night after a lot of driving yesterday. I had to fix a client's computer in Philadelphia and it is about a 3 hour drive there and 3 hours back. All for a half hour of work swapping parts in one of their computers. I've just been so busy lately that I haven't had a lot of time in the past few weeks to post here. I tried the other night and my home pc decided to crash so I had to fix some issues with it.

I hope everything is going well for you too. Let me know how everything is going when you get a chance.

Hey Tony,

I'm glad things are going well with the job. I know all about those long drives for quick fixes. In one of my previous incarnations, I actually oversaw the IT department for a home health company and had to manage about 800 users at 18 sites in 14 states. Lots of fun, lots of headaches and lots of hard work.

Today, I actually stay as far away from the IT stuff as possible. I maintain my home wired / wireless network that includes my wife's desktop, my laptop, two printers, scanners and the kids' laptops, but I don't even have a home email account. And let's not get into the whole phone technology gig. I send and receive calls (grudgingly) but don't use the text or camera or anything else. Guess I'm turning into that old caveman I always swore I would never be.

But I digress -- lately I know all about busy. I just completed one construction project at work and moved four department teams with a total of about 75 employees. Then the wife and I got the brilliant idea we wanted to do some work around the house. One thing led to another and we ended up installing carpet and ceramic tile throughout 85 percent of the house, remodeling the powder room off the foyer, and refastening all the flooring in the areas where the tile and carpet were installed to get rid of some annoying squeaks. We had to accomplish all this in nine days while the kids were out of the house. It didn't help when I caught a nasty head cold about halfway through the projects. But we finished last night so now all is good at home.

I hope you are continuing to feel well. It might seem tough at times but its great that you can now stay as busy and active as you are. (Sure beats the alternative.) Best to you and your wife.

Have a great day!

It's been a while since I could post on here. I've been so busy with work/interning and school that all I have time for is running back and forth. We took a trip to New York last Saturday with my mother-in-law for her Birthday. I have to resize some of the pics and post them tomorrow. Life really seems to be getting busy all of a sudden. I'm hoping that it can slow down just a little bit and I can take time to relax.

Hi Tony,

As you know, relaxation is great, but busy is pretty good too. It sure beats that alternative of chronic illness or worse. I hope that work and school are going well and I hope you and the family are doing great.

Keep up the good work and I hope you have a great day!

Christena's Dad: How is everything going? I got some rest yesterday, and a little time to breathe because of a stomach virus. It lasted 24 hours and I feel fine this morning.

Pictures from our NY trip last weekend.

Hey Tony,

Great pictures. Looks like you and your honey had quite the fun time in the Big Apple. Is the shot of the Empire State building from the Top of the Rock? Refresh my memory -- what church do you have pictured? It seems so familiar, but I can't place it. I had the opportunity to take the family to NYC a few years ago and we had a fun and whirlwind time seeing the city in about three days. I had been there before, but it was a first for my wife, son and daughter. We were fortunate that we stayed right in the heart of Times Square and could walk and take the subway to many of the places we really wanted to see. Of course, we couldn't visit all the places we had hoped, but a fun. touristy, time nonetheless.

Sorry to hear about the virus, but at least it was of short duration. Are you being able to stay up with your studies with all the demands of your intern position? Ah, who cares (I'm sure you do) - looks like you are having a ton of fun and you look like you're really doing well healthwise.

Keep plugging away and having fun, and I hope you have a great day!

Wow it feels like forever since I've logged in here. I've been so busy lately that I haven't been able to just sit down at a computer that I wasn't working on. I just got back from vacation and have a free day for most of today. My family and I visited my in-laws/out-laws in Orange County California for a week and I figured I would post some pics.

Check the next post in a few hours when I have them imported to my computer and resized to fit here and you can see them.

July 25th 2009-
The pancreas transplant seems to have stopped working after 2 years 7 months and 5 days. I was put back on insulin to control diabetes and an agressive course of steroids to see if the transplant will salvage at all. So far there has been no such luck and I am unsure if another transplant is even an option yet.

Tony, this is very sad news. Hope all goes well for you, my friend. Please don't rule out this possibility yet........................."So far there has been no such luck and I am unsure if another transplant is even an option yet."

Another friend of mine named Tony H just recently passed away. My friend Tony was the longest living heart transplant recipient in America.

Hello Tony.

I am glad that you have posted on your beautiful blog here. I see I have missed many important submissions by you.

Keep your chin up and see what the doctors will say. I am sure they will consider you for a retransplant. Doctors do not like to jump the gun too quickly. I am sure if they thought you needed to get prepared for another transplant they would talk to you about this. Please ask them all your questions instead of second guessing.

Love and hugs,
Rise'

Been a little busy lately since the pancreas rejection. With all of the immunosupression I've had bronchitis and pneumonia over the past few weeks so I had more than a week long stay in the hospital.

I'm doing Ok now. Still slow on the recovery but I'm getting better. I've been back to work this week and am doing some Physical Therapy on my knee from my accident last year.
