While on hemo, my feet would cramp really bad if they tried to take off too much fluid. Sometimes my legs but most of the time, my feet when it happened.
There are not too many things in life worth working my butt off for, but my health is one of them |

Hi Brian I am not a Kidney patient. If i do not take enough magnesium, I will wake up with bad leg cramps. This happens only if I miss a few doses of magnesium.

HelloBrian, when I was on Dialysis, sometimes when they took off too much fluid, I would get cramp in my toes and calfs but thankfully that wasnt too often and when I went on to do selfcare dialysis in unit, things were even better. Did all my own calculations set the sodium and u f volumes on the machine so never got cramps after that. you get to know what your limits are after a while so dialysis will get easier. hope you get on ok kind regards and best wishes Malcolm

How many of you are on celestrol medication. I was having such bad cramps and joint pain. Last week my doctor thought it was my crestor and told me to stop taking it for a week and see if there gone and not in pain. Lord and behold I now feel like a new person no cramps or joint pains. Will be calling him tomorrow to let him know the results. I read people that develop this problem should never take statin ever again. sheila

I can really relate to this post - I used to get massive cramping - in my shins, and down to my feet. It got to the stage that I could not lay in bed, with the weight of the sheet / doona causing extreme pain. I the end, I resorted to having like a cage over my feet that held them off my legs. It turns out it was a combination in my case. Low potassium, and Cholesterol medication was the cause. My GP (not sure if you know this term - General Practitioner ie Doctor) was brilliant, and he obtained samples of all the different meds from the drug companies, and we trialled them one by one for about 2 weeks until found one that did not give me problems. From memory, the worst was a product called Zocor, and the one I was using before my transplant was Lipitor, which only caused minor cramping. The good part is that it is now a thing of the past - no issues with bananas & potassium, and I haven't needed cholesterol medication since my kidney / Pancreas transplant Ian |

There could be a few causes of cramping, commonly it is potassium or magnesium. I often have to take potassium supplements because mine drops low. However, because potassium affects your heart, you should have blood work done to make sure that is what it is. I took Crestor before my transplant. Like my dad, I had bad muscle aches. I ended up unable to walk without help so I refuse to take cholesterol meds. Thankfully, since my transplant I have had no real problems with my cholesterol
