When I came back home last night i read a note from Meagan. She might be back in the hospital due to high potassium levels. Please pray for all of our friends here. God Bless Meagan Rise

Rise' Thanks, They got my potassium down again and my creatinine also went down and thankfully I am back home in my own comfortable bed waiting for the transplant team to call me as to what they are going to do next to solve this recurrent hyperkalemia. I had the blood test on Tuesday and the potassium level was dangerously high and they called and told me to get to the hospital immediately. This turn of events has triggered the leg pain and my poor husband is exhausted worrying about me having a cardiac arrest which could result from a high potassium level. I told him not to worry and that they wouldn't let me out if they thought I was in any imminent danger, but I do have to wonder if it's back up again. It's not something you can test yourself like you test your blood sugar. Anyway, I am positive the new year will bring good things for all. I will continue to pray for Bob and everyone who is having tough times. Love, Meagan

Dear Meagan. I will be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that your doctors can figure out how best to treat the hyperkalemia. I am glad too that you are home. Hopefully the new year will bring better health and new hopes to you. You certainly have many here wanting only the best for you. Many, many hugs.

Hi Meagan, I hope your levels will stabilize and the new year will be looking up for you. I'm wondering if your MD's have tried to lower your Potassium with Kayexalate taken by mouth. Mike had very high Potassium levels for years before the transplant and took it twice a day 7 days a week religiously. He did follow a strict low Potassium Diet and with frequent blood work they would keep an eye on his Potassium levels and change the Kayexelate if needed. He hates the taste and drinks it with a small amount of chocolate milk to disguise the taste. His Potassium levels with taking the Kayexalate usually fell in the 4.5-5.0 level with 5.1 being the cut off with most labs. There were times that it would not go below 5.4 and it wasn't good but he was taking all precautions to keep it in the range. Forgive me if I did not spell the medicine correctly. Like you, his Potassium level was considered extremely high and he was told to go directly to the ER because of the danger it could cause if left at that level. It was a lab error but it was warning and his levels were high enough and out of the normal range without meds to lower it. The diet wasn/t enough. Mike is taking Kayexalate even after the transplant to help keep his Potassium within normal levels. The same goes for the diet. We were told that in some kidney patients it's not unusual for the level ton remain high after a kidney transplant. I don't know how the Potassium levels are after a transplant such as yours. I do know that many of the antirejection meds and other meds have side effects that can cause this too. I hope you stay well and a Happy and Healthy New Year to you and yours.

Hi Robin, Thanks for the suggestion of chocolate milk with the kaexelate. It is nasty stuff and I had no warning when I took my first dose at home. In the hospital they flavored it with something but they mixed it much thicker than I have to home. Dr. Ross, has told me to take it twice per week. I have to do one tonight. On Friday, it never worked. I went today to get the potassium level checked and will find out the results tomorrow. I do hope they are not high as I do not relish the thought of having to go back to the hospital as those gurneys are terribly uncomfortable with my herniated disk and leg pain, They believe the levels get high because I take ramipril (altace) a blood pressure medication. When my creatinine numbers were off we were worried it was my kidneys. But I have no choice but to take the ramipril hence the treatment with the kaexalate. I am going to start a post on the kaexelate/potassium and see if I can get more suggestions for spiking this nasty stuff. I commend your husband for stomaching it twice per day each and every day. Poor guy. Thanks, Meagan
