The never ending Gift of Life
Posted by Kelly on January 24, 2013 at 1:46am

I would like to share my mothers gift.

On March 25,2011 this was my daughters 9th birthday and also the day that my mother grew wings. She passed at 4:54pm due to a pulmonary embolism. Since she passed off life support no major organ was viable. They did however recover two corneas and 197 pieces of bone, cardiac tissue, valves and skin. To this day and my current update letter my mother has succeeded in helping 149 dying individuals. Her gift was so profound and worked so well she was awarded the Bronze Star of life. She gave the greatest gift of sight. Her first recipient was due to lose her eye in TWO days, because of my mothers passing my mothers gift saved her eye and its working beautifully today. Her other cornea recipient had been legally blind most of his life and on 3-28-11 he was given my mothers left cornea. I found out on Jan 8, 2013 he is currently learning to read a book. The amount of people my mother helped is so overwhelming. Since finding all of this out I am no longer bitter over her death I look at it like this if she had no passed she wouldn't have saved so many. Knowing her death wasn't in vain has helped me totally accept her passing and look at it with a refined perspective. My goal in life now is to promote and educate people on the gift of Organ Donation for I have found so many people lack education to the subject or most have incorrect misconceptions about the process. I feel by openly sharing my mothers story and displaying my grief I may be able to persuade one more person to change their mind and become a donor therefor saving a life. My motto is die a hero, donate.
