For those of you who love good books, please take the time to read this wonderful book It's a very heartwarming novel based on social protests against the structures of the society that would later give rise to apartheid. Paton attempts to create an unbiased and objective view of the dichotomies this entails: he depicts the Whites as affected by 'native crime', while the Blacks suffer from social instability and moral issues due to the breakdown of the tribal system. It shows many of the problems with South Africa such as the degrading of the land reserved for the natives, which is sometimes considered to be the main theme, the disintegration of the tribal community, native crime and the flight to the urban areas. South Africa was the location of the very first heart transplant in 1968. Publisher___ Scribners (USA) & Jonathan Cape (UK) Ol' Bob

Hi there Bob - what a wonderful surprise to see you recommend this book! I am originally South African and this book was banned for a long time in South Africa under the apartheid regime. I remember the day that the beaches were opened to all -- it was 1999 and I was in my first year of university! (If you can believe this, there were separate beaches for each separate race group ...). This is a fantastic book. May I recommend, if you're interested, one of my favorite books written by a South African author- Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee. It is a bit darker but very beautifully written. And Dr. Chris Barnard, who was the surgeon that performed the transplant, was a HERO in South Africa. I remember the hero status, though not the transplant -- was born in 1972 :-)). Much love, Rainbow PS. Uh-oh: you started me on my favorite topic - books!!!
