What’s the matter? Brain not working right? … can’t think of that – idea, word or thought? Feeling kinda numb and foggy? Well, welcome to the world of overcrowded minds!!!!!

Many of us have that bad habit of cramming as much in to our brain as we can- and then some more! As a result, we tend to develop more frequent periods of ‘cloudy thought.’

The easy fix is to stop doing so much. But, this is not so realistic. A more reasonable solution (even though it sounds kind of esoteric) is to start breathing more! ‘Huh?...’ Yes, breathing deeper and with more intention will help you attain that focus that sometimes eludes your conscious thoughts.

Let me explain a little physiology to help make this idea more clear. Your mind and body are deeply connected. This can be proven simply by observing the reaction of mental stress on the body.

Introduce a mental stress and watch the heart rate increase and blood vessels tighten to elevate blood pressure. Mind effects body. And the opposite is obvious. Smash a finger= ‘ouch!’ Emotion is generated from the body. These ideas of the interconnection of mind and body relate to the breath and mind also.

The breath is not limited to the lungs. All parts of the body can ‘breathe’ right down to each little cell. As we gain more access they can breathe more efficiently which, in simple terms, increases the health of that part. This occurs from cellular level to organ level.

Here is a short guided tour into the realm of breathing- just to show you its something very simple and effective. Breathe 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out- no strain, no sensation of suffocation, only smooth easy inhale and exhale. Lengthen this time 1 second on each end at a time as your body tolerates.. what does this do your thoughts?

Does it empty it? Is it more clear? What do you feel…. Ooo, a very big question! Can you feel more in your brain? Imagine how much further this can be taken if you actually spent sometime practicing it. How much more creative/productive can you be if you start to access more of your mind?.... or even more simple, if you can open your creative thought what would you do with it?

Longevity breathing is a means to access more of your body and mind.
As you achieve a longer more stable breath- your system becomes more accessible and quieter by allowing blood to flow smoother, nerves to conduct more efficiently and qi to fill your body evenly. The end result would be that you prepare your body to live healthier for a longer period.

Nick and I are having frequent brain farts lately. I did not realize breathing could help. Makes sense since enough oxygen is probably not getting to our brains. Will definitely try to learn proper breathing which is something I have never been able to do.

I don't think I can practice with him though. When we took childbirth classes, they tried to teach us proper breathing, but we got kicked out of class because we cracked up laughing. You see, he had to simulate pain by squeezing my leg and it hurt so bad I started laughing. Yep, we disturbed the class so we got the boot.

I think if we know how to breath properly it can help us through a lot of situations.

Thanks :-)

Well I've heard "laugh till it hurts" and deep breathing is a known part of yoga relaxation techniques.
Meggie, I am sorry to hear your husband and you were having gas problems.

I believe laughing till it hurts is good for your body, mind & soul. I haven't tried breathing till it hurts yet.
If farting in a classroom full of people isn't funny, then I don't know what is.
Meagan, I'd be laughing right along with you and your hubby right out the door of that place!
