I was just wondering what others' experience with ginger supplementation has been. I was told to take 550 mg of ginger before I go to bed to help with acid problems I am having at night because of its possible promotility effects. I think it may be helping some. Has any one else had success or any problems with taking ginger? Thank you for your time.

I was told by my GI doctor to take ginger (a capsule of 550mg) before I go to bed when I told him I was having problems with acid building up at night while I am trying to do my tube feeding through my g-tube. The acid can become such that I have to stop feeding and drain and then try again. The disruption is not good because it can affect my efforts at gaining weight, and I certainly cannot afford to lose and still need to gain much. The ginger seems to working well enough to prevent the acid from coming in the middle of the night, but a few hours before I am to finish my feedings it is trying to come back. I am thinking perhaps I need to set an alarm to remind me to take the ginger in the middle of the night and see if this makes the last of the morning acid free. I think that the doctor suggested the ginger because I am already on Nexium for the acid and Domperidone for motility. I had this trouble with a build up of acid before and the motility drug stopped it. I am not sure why the problem began again. Has anyone else used ginger and would be willing to share their experience? I appreciate any responses.

Hi BobbieJo

Sounds like it is working. I am happy for you.

I remember many years ago, I tried ginger spice when my stomach was feeling a bit off. It worked!

Thank you for responding Rise'. I tried taking the ginger in the middle of the night as well as before I went to bed last night, and I woke up without any acid! My mouth was really dry, but I can handle this to finish up my feeding and then drink some water. I am happy too because my weight is up to 82 lbs. It had gotten down to 80 lbs. This is still not close to where I would like for it to be (not even where it had been for about a year, 84 lbs.), but at least it is heading in a better direction, and with the acid under control, hopefully I can help it reach upwards more easily. Thank you as always for your support. It means the moon, sun and stars and even more to me. I hope your week is going well for you. Many hugs.

Ginger has many medicinal properties. My mother-in-law cuts ginger into small chunks and soaks them in lemon juice and a touch of salt. It does wonders for nausea.

I haven't tried it as a means of reducing acid reflux; but based on what I am reading, I will.

:-) Bobbie Jo

I am thrilled for you~

You will be reaching your goal very soon.

Because of you, I am going to buy some fresh ginger.

Mohan- I love lemon and lime juice.

Be careful those who have trouble with acid because limes are more acidic than lemons.

Since that first night, I am now having troubles with acid the last hour or two of the feeding and this is with taking the ginger twice. I suppose I must keep experimenting with the time top take the second dose of ginger and rate of feeding to see if that will help (my nurse suggested that I decrease my rate of feeding a little to see if that would help). This morning I had to end a little early because of a hint of acid but mainly because my stomach hurt such that it felt it was going to burst and I just could not get comfortable. I do not mean to complain, I am just worried about this because I am at a such a low weight 82 lbs. currently (had gotten down to 80 lbs. before the ginger), but I had been 84 lbs. for a long time before this time, and of course, that is still much underweight and I would like to be at a much higher weight. The acid and pain though make it difficult to get in everything. I use the formula to supplement what I can get in orally during the day which sometimes can be difficult too because of how volume sensitive I am and how I tend toward reflux along with malabsorption issues. I am just a little bit frustrated at the moment, so I apologize. I am wondering if it might be a good idea to suggest to my doctors a need to scope my esophagus and stomach to make sure that they are okay, but I am not sure if that would help or not. Thank you for listening and always being so supportive. May you have a blessed weekend.

Dear Bobbie Jo

May I ask what foods do you eat during the day? On a personal note, I cannot tolerate too many acidic foods so I avoid them.

Greens are very important to help our bodies become more alkaline and I try to incorporate lots of green veggies daily.

Never apologize for venting. This is what this site is all about.

love and hugs

Dear Rise',
I also have to avoid acidic foods as you probably already guessed. I tend to eat oatmeal (sometimes adding the supplement Benecalorie to the flavored kind), some breads and some peanut butter, yogurt, rice, some beans, sometimes mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, sometimes fish or lean, thin slices of turkey or chicken. I can sometimes have greens, but they have to be cooked tender and can not be too fibrous (like broccoli), pasta (but without the tomato sauce because of the acid), some cereals. This is because I still have some gastroparesis, or slowing of the stomach motility, and anything high fat or high fiber can further delay emptying which can cause more problems. These are some of the things I generally eat, but it either seems to go quickly through me at one end or I reflux or vomit it from the other. I try though to do my best and have several small meals throughout the day to try to accommodate the small capacity of my stomach to hold foods. I have trouble with taking in too much fluid at once due to the reflux I can experience. I do want to gain and improve my strength and stamina overall. I have a new incentive too. I want to play my violin again and eventually take private lessons. I have missed this so. Anyway I will try to contact my doctor this week to see what he has to say. Thank you for being so kind in responding to me. Many hugs.

Hi BobbieJo,

Have you tried to going gluten free? I have seen a big difference in my overall health. I feel that I absorb my foods and I have less congestion from my CF sinuses.

Have you ever thought about buying a Vitamix juicer? I have one and I add fruits to make sherbert or juices with frozen fruits.

Talking about greens, I love to create soups with the toughest veggies that are hard to chew. I put them all into the blender and puree them into delicious tasting soups. I add tofu or beans to create a creamy texture. Since I drink hemp milk daily, I add in hemp milk to also add to the mixture instead of water which adds more calories.

I have found that the soups allow me to properly digest the veggies due to the fact that they have been predigested by the blender.

I have often wondered if is possible to make your own tube feeds by creating healthier food recipes by blending them into a liquid?

Feel better and I am sure you will accomplish your goals.
