I was heart transplanted 4 months ago. I am very blessed to still be here. Thanks to my donor and my donor's family.

I just started going to the gym again to work out and try to build some of my muscles back. I asked my doc if I could take whey protein for muscle recovery before and after my workout. He thought it wasn't safe for me to take whey protein. He said it might interfere with my meds and kidneys could also be affected. I was wondering if any of you was told the same thing about whey protein from your doc and still took it anyways without any problems.

I am on cyclosporine, cell cept, prednisone, for anti rejection meds.

I am a year out on my kidney transplant and use a nutritional shake (http://doughemsley.bodybyvi.com) for post workouts. I showed my doctor the label and he had no problem with it or me building muscles. You obviously do not want to over do it on the protein either. I have used these shakes for 4 months now with no problems.

I use Dymatize Iso 100. I buy it from Vitacost. I also use a little bit of sugar to speed the whey to my muscles. Just a few teaspoons. No matter what you are planning to use, it is a good idea to run it past your doctor before buying whatever you plan on using.

Excuse me, but I have what may be a dumb question. Why are you eating protein other than what you can get eating meat or fish? My nephrology team tells me that about 6 1/2 ounces of meat or fish with a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and grains are sufficient to keep my muscles fit (with exercise of course). Is this for a vegetarian diet? Thanks for your help.

Well I personally bought which I thought was one of the better brands of Whey protein (organic of course) and I broke out around my lips and nose and started to itch all over. I no longer will ever consume whey protein or any dairy product. There are too many negatives for me. I will find another way to gain muscle weight.

From what I have been reading regarding whey protein it seems it increases the insulin like growth factor 1 receptor IGF 1R.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin-like_growth_factor_1

Its primary action is mediated by binding to its specific receptor, the Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor, abbreviated as ""IGF1R"", present on many cell types in many tissues. Binding to the IGF1R, a receptor tyrosine kinase, initiates intracellular signaling; IGF-1 is one of the most potent natural activators of the AKT signaling pathway, a stimulator of cell growth and proliferation, and a potent inhibitor of programmed cell death.

IGF-1 is a primary mediator of the effects of growth hormone (GH). Growth hormone is made in the anterior pituitary gland, is released into the blood stream, and then stimulates the liver to produce IGF-1. IGF-1 then stimulates systemic body growth, and has growth-promoting effects on almost every cell in the body, especially skeletal muscle, cartilage, bone, liver, kidney, nerves, skin, hematopoietic cell, and lungs. In addition to the insulin-like effects, IGF-1 can also regulate cell growth and development, especially in nerve cells, as well as cellular DNA synthesis.

Deficiency of either growth hormone or IGF-1 therefore results in diminished stature. GH-deficient children are given recombinant GH to increase their size. IGF-1 deficient humans, who are categorized as having Laron syndrome, or Laron's dwarfism, are treated with recombinant IGF-1. In beef cattle, circulating IGF-1 concentrations are related to reproductive performance.[7]

Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) and other tyrosine kinase growth factor receptors signal through multiple pathways. A key pathway is regulated by phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) and its downstream partner, the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). Rapamycins complex with FKBPP12 to inhibit the mTORC1 complex. mTORC2 remains unaffected and responds by upregulating Akt, driving signals through the inhibited mTORC1. Phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 4e (eif-4E) [4EBP] by mTOR inhibits the capacity of 4EBP to inhibit eif-4E and slow metabolism."

It is interesting that you bring this matter up. I was once tested to see what my insulin-like growth factor-1 was because of my difficulty in gaining weight. It was abnormally low. He was not sure of the reason or which came first, the low weight or the low insulin-like growth factor-1. I was told that the treatment for this would be to receive growth hormone, but I can not because growth hormone can increase the risk of rejection of the transplant. I wonder if this is another reason I have trouble with gaining weight. Currently I have hit a plateau weight and cannot seem to gain more although I really need to. Thank you for looking into these matters.

Bill, this is not for a vegan diet. I lift weights four days a week and do treadmill, ride a bike or walk about 3 times a week. When you have a lot of activity, you have to feed you body. If I burn 3,000 calories a day, I need to eat more of everything, including protein. Whey protein, especially whey protein isolate is one of the purest forms of protein-very close to lean meat and fish.

Thanks Gregg, at 76, I'm not going to be burning that many calories unless I can kick my brain into a much higher gear. Hope your kidney keeps chugging along!
