Since I have been taking Vitamin D daily (1000mg or more daily) I have not had a cold or flu. There are many articles on the importance about taking vitamin D if you do not get enough sunlight. I try and take in both. I remember my transplant surgeon asking me if i was taking vitamin D prior to transplant. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/08/27/Canada-Looks-at-Vi tamin-D-for-Swine-Flu-Protection.aspx

Risa: Maybe that's why I haven't been sick in a long time. I take a liquid Vitamin D supplement. I can remember right now how many mg it is, but it's in addition to all the other supplements I take. Ummm...very interesting!! God Bless!

Thank you Karen for sharing. You are a Wonderful Person and I am so proud of you for all that you are and for all that you do around here by always providing support and feedback. There might be flu's of all kinds throughout our lives. We cannot escape germs from our internal and external environment, all we can do is provide our bodies with the right defenses. In addition to taking vitamin D, I also take one teaspoon of cod liver oil and fish oil. I am going to have a vitamin D blood test soon. I was suppose to have this three months ago and something was not received correctly on Quest labs end. I have to go to another doctor to just get a vitamin D blood test script. No biggies. This is just fuel for my motivation to find a local doc

Hey ya'll, isn't vitamin D in milk, yogurt and supposely from the sun for about 15mints? Of course, soon as my stomach gets a lot better, I am suppose to be taking my Actonel. I bought me some Greek plain yogurt and that is the most strongest tasting yogurt I have eating. Whoo! Even my cat ate some.

Risa: I just looked at my Vit. D bottle. I get 6000mg of Vitamin D with that supplement. I also take Fish oil capsules. I can't handle the cod liver oil. I have tried it. I just can't do it. I think it's the texture more than the flavor. I have never had my Vitamin D levels tested that I know of. Unless that's something they look at when they take the 20 vials of blood everytime I go to my clinic appointments. I will ask the next time I am up there. I am kind of thinking that the Vit. D, the probiotics, the nose washing, good food, and the water drinking are keeping me cold free. Sammy and Jerry both had colds and I never got it. How can that be? I am so amazed!!! I think my body is finally strong again. I feel that's really good going into the surgery of a lifetime. I work on staying healthy everyday. I hope it pays off in the end. God Bless!

Risa: It's a liquid form of Vitamin D3. I take 3 (2000 IU each). It's made by Biotics Research - called Bio-D-Mulsion Forte. I have been using it for over a year now. God Bless!

I had another vitamin D test and it still came back low. I am taking 12 thousand mg of Vitamin d. All my other vitamins tests came back normal. I would like to know how many of you take very high doses of vitamin D?

Risa: Have you tried liquid Vitamin D. I take 6000 IU of vitamin D a day plus what is in my food, but I use a liquid vitamin D by Biotics Research. I use the Forte rather than the regular. I don't know if that will help. I have not had my vitamin D levels tested. God Bless!

Thank you Karen I am going to ask my new endocrinologist to give me a monthly script for a vitamin d test and I will keep testing until I reach the desired number. Here is my plan. Since the vitamin d dry pills I take have no effect whatsoever, I am going to greatly reduce this amount and take five teaspoons of cod liver oil which has additional 2,000 units of vitamin d from cod livers. Then in one month, I will test again. If my number is not up to par, I will buy the biotics research brand. Tell me the exact name of the one you take. Mostly everyone who does not get enough sunlight is low in vitamin d. Even if you take the supplements, it seems to be the new findings that labs are reporting. My acupuncturist can get the biotics for me.

Hi Rise' My bottle says 400 IU and I take one pill per day. Not sure how many grams that is. I think 1 IU = 10 mg. Hey, I grew up with the imperial system, not this metric stuff. I also take calcium and I believe the two work together. When I had my babies, the doctors would say make sure you give the baby at least 20 minutes/day of sunlight. Now, it's be careful and make sure the baby is wearing a hat, sunglasses and sunblock.

I take Oscal, with vitamin D (400 IU), 3 times a day. Once a month I take 50,000 IU of vitamin D. The orthopedic doc told me that these amounts, with calcium, will promote/maintain good bone health. I was on Fosamax, with Vit D for almost 2 years, but that was stopped as my bone density tests showed improvement. I'm not sure how to convert IU numbers, I "THINK" it's different, for various things. And don't ask me why, LOL.

Hi Meagan and Dap I am curious Dap, what is the pill that you take once per month of 50.000 units of vitamin d. IU stands for international units.

Rise' I know what IU stands for, but not how to convert to mg. Different vitamins convert at different rates, I believe. It's actually 50,000 IU of Vitamin D2 (this is a prescription dose) ....... a single, blueish-green, translucent capsule ......... will add a pic below with a dime and DonateLife pin so you can see the relative size.

Thank you! Since Vitamin D is stored in the liver, a one time higher dose is sufficient. I wonder why they did not give you a vitamin D test? I am going to ask for a script if my cod liver oil dose does not bring me up to par. I just need to raise another ten points to be in the normal range.

Rise' Actually, they did check my Vit D level at that point and it was pretty decent, as I remember. My Tx Coordinator "guessed" that the orthopedic doc would stop the Vit D and the Fosamax ......... the ortho doc said I should keep taking the Vit D, as it would continue helping me.

Risa: I take Bio-D-Emulsion Forte from Biotics Research. This one has 2000 IU of Vitamin D3. My bone doctor at the Cleveland Clinic was very interested in learning more about it. I gave her some information. I don't know what my vitamin D levels are, but I will ask for them to be tested the next time I need blood work. God Bless!

Thank you Karen The blood vitamin D test is called Vitamin D 25-OH I will give myself one month to see if my levels increase after taking larger doses of Cod Liver Oil. I am happy I thought about asking for my vitamin tests. many years ago it would have cost me a fortune and now I get it for free.

I take 1500 IU of Vitamin D daily. They encouraged me to take extra vitamin D because I could not be exposed to as much sun as I have been used to over the years.

Hi John I found an over the counter D Biotics Research and I take ten drops daily which brings me up to a 51 blood level of vitamin D which is good. I would like to aim for the sixties. I just had a C reactive protein test which came back on the extremely low end which is great. This measures inflammation in the body. This is not a routine blood test but I requested this because I eat a very healthy diet and was very curious. My vitamin E and vitamin A levels were normal and I do not take these specific supplements. I do take omega 3 from Krill oil and Cod liver oil so I am getting my dose from these supplements. If anyone is interested in knowing the exact amounts and brands, just ask me.

My uncle is now taking a MX Vitamin D. Great benefits that we can gain through taking this kind of vitamin are it boost our immune system and avoid vitamin D deficiency symptoms and optimal dosage for daily health support throughout the year. Maybe that's why my father was encouraging to take Vitamin D. |

My vitamin D is on the low end of normal, in the thirties (according to the last labs), and my local doctor thinks this is good. He does not want the vitamin D level to be to high for fear of it thus activating the immune system. Has anyone else been told this? I am taking a daily supplement of vitamin D and calcium citrate and was told to stop the once a month vitamin D of 50,000 IU I had been taking. The extra worry perhaps in my case could be due to my six organ transplant, but I was just wondering if keeping the vitamin D from being too high was a concern for others' doctors mentioned to them.

At my year appointment (4/3/12) my hepatologist put me on 1,000U of D and 1,500gm of calcium per day and one Actonel per week. My Dexa showed me having poor bone density. (Dr. told me it was from the alcohol and also from the suite of post tx drugs). So, once again, good to see it's not just me that's having to do all this! I love this forum, everything I feel is searchable so far! Weight gain, check, bones, check.
