One of our dear Donor Moms, Janet Keller, planted a "Garden of Memory" in her yard in memory of her dear son Joe http://www.childreninheaven.netfirms.com/joekeller.htm , who lost his life due to drowning back in 1994. Joe's "Gift of Life" allowed several others to live full productive lives. God Bless Donor Families.

I think it's nice to have memorials like that. I like the "Garden of Memory" idea. We're working on some landscaping in our yard. Maybe I can incorporate something (on a smaller scale since we're on a steep hill) in our yard.

Another one of my hobbies are Bonsai trees. I started 3 more on Saturday, in memory of my Donor Family. If I ever meet them, I'd like to give them one if they want it.

I'll post pics in a day or two in the hobbies thread.

Bob...THANK YOU...you are way too sweet....Thank you for posting the picture of Joe's garden on the site.....and I wish that all of you could come to my house and sit in Joe's garden. I can so much feel his presence when I am there. He would've loved it. There are so many things that are special in his garden...little things tucked in here and there......all have a story and are there for a reason.

Scott....what a beautiful thing you are doing...I have never had a Bonsai tree...are they hard to take care of? And if I were your Donor Family...I would be so honored to have a tree that you started...it would be such a special gift. I hope that one day you are able to meet your donor family to share one with them. I would love to see some pictures of them.

Risa...thank you so much for your sweet comments...I wish you lived closer, so that you could be my neighbor...I have a little table and chairs in the middle of all of this...we could have a nice cup of tea...or iced tea....and chat..

LadyDi...you are so right...it is a great place to sit and think. I used to sit for hours out by the pond at night time, listening to the frogs croaking...and the crickets....it is so nice...the sound of the waterfalls, and the flag waving in the breeze, just beautiful and peaceful.

Love to all, Janet

Janet, I was Blessed to become acquainted with you and your family VIA emails. I first met you on this wonderful website that our dear friend, Risa created, several years ago. I hope that my efforts and endeavors will also honor the countless numbers of donor families for they are the true heroes of organ and tissue donation.

God Bless

Hi Jan,

Welcome (back) to the group. I'm new here, so I only go back a couple of months. First let me say, God bless you for the gifts you gave during such a sacrifice. I lost a cousin in 1993 who was like a brother to me. My aunt also has special things placed around her home for him. He was killed by a drunk driver while he was riding a motor cycle. There was no chance in him becoming a donor. We had talked about it though, and he wanted to be. We had this Chevy vs. Ford rivalry going and when one of us would outrun the other, we'd have to go out and spend more money on our cars to go a little faster, always back and forth. Before he died, I had bought a new F-150 truck, so he had to out do me by buying a full size Chevy Sport truck with a bigger engine. It was definitely a hotrod truck. We didn't even have to race them. He won! Anyway, my aunt still has it, and I'm in the process of detailing it for her right now.

Brad's Truck

It's the first time I've driven it since he was killed. Brings back a lot of memories, and I'm really enjoying it (even if it is a Chevrolet ). I haven't had the health to do this sort of work in about fifteen years. I am truly grateful to my donor family, wherever they are. Hearing from other donor families makes it even more real as to what you all have done for us.

The trees I do really aren't hard to take care of. You just have to be consistent with them. I'll be happy to share with you (or anyone) how I have gone about it. You can email me at neverslowdown@aol.com and I'll give you more details. I posted a few photos on the Laughter & Small Talk Forum, under "Part 2 Txbuddies Hobbies".

I'll see if this link works and can take you there:
http://www.transplantbuddies.org/tbx/messages/15/17250.html?1208574403

There are quite a few web sites that give you ideas as to what is "proper". One of them being if you have multiples in one pot, it should always be an odd number. I don't always go by the rules. I do things how I want to, so I found this little holly bush (about $4.00) that had two in one pot. I received two lungs, so I'm going to shape this one to look like a pair of lungs.

Holly Bonsai

Another one is an Azalea that will bloom. I know I got lungs from a 15 year old girl, so I'm sure she liked flowers. I can't go wrong with either of them. If I ever meet her family, I'll let them pick which they prefer or knowing me, I'll give them both of them if they want them.

Bless you again, and I'm glad you're here.

Janet:

I have just had time to read your son's story and look at your beautiful garden in memory of him. He certainly was an amazing young man. I love the story about how you knew that donating his organs was the right thing to do after walking by his friend's house that had the kidney transplant. I believe Joe was talking to you too. You son lives on in so many people that are so thankful for what Joe and your family have given them. Not many of us can leave this world knowing that we have saved countless lives. Joe was one of those people. Thank you for sharing his story with us!

God Bless you!!

Now that I've been on this site for a little while....I'm starting to explore around and read the older posts that I missed. I am so glad to find this one with another view of Janet's beautiful yard and all that it represents. I, too, wish I could live closer and come have a cup of tea out there with you.

I have an interest in bonsai, also. although I've never quite mastered it the right way. It turned into a tree growing hobby instead because I didn't keep them small in the long run. I take the tiny 1/2 inch baby tree seedlings I find and grow them into big trees. After Sarah died.....I took one of them to the park near here and transplanted it there in her memory. It's a red maple. I have to keep taking jugs of water to it because there's no water source there and it's so dry.

Sarah's Mom, I so glad that you're enjoying this marvelous site that our dear friend Risa created for all to enjoy. FYI The young man Scott F who posted several posts above was one of our dear transplantbuddies on this site. Regretfully we lost our dear friend Scott several months ago, due to complications with his lung transplant. He was a wonderful guy who contributed much to this site. We dearly miss him. He was truly multi-talented in many ways.

Kristen....thank you so much for your kind words....I am so glad that you are enjoying exploring the site. I forgot about the story that Scott had told me almost a year ago...........she was such a sweet man....very thoughtful!! Bob, I miss him too, and Kristen, thank you for reminding me to revisit some of the places that we have been.....to remember those who are no longer here with us.

The bonsai trees sound great...I am not much of a green thumb, so I go the easiest route....I wish I had a week or two to tell you all about Joe, his garden...and all of the wonderful things I remember about him. I do miss him so much....as I know you miss Sarah. And any time you get 'close by' we will certainly sit out by Joe's garden and have that cup of tea.........a little chilly right now, but it is still beautiful. The crocus's are starting to pop through the ground....finally some color will be back.

"I wish I had a week or two to tell you all about Joe, his garden...and all of the wonderful things I remember about him"

Janet, this is your recent quote above. Heck, along with your correspondence explaining the contents of the pic and my pic posting ability, we will accomplish this easily, by golly.

Message from Janet:

Bob, this is in Joe's garden...it is a piece of 'driftwood' from Camp Tuckahoe, the local Boy Scout Camp. We are going there next weekend to play "Camp Masters" for the weekend. We found this a few years ago when we were walking around the camp after everyone had left for the weekend. I added the plants to it to help it to look like it 'blended in'. Of course there is no 'drift wood' at Camp Tuckahoe, but it was a great addition to Joe's garden, right beside the pond with the turtles in...Joe's favorite critter....turtles. I try to find things like this when I go away, so that I can add things to Joe's garden...it is the only way I have of 'giving something to Joe'.

Ol' Bob

P.S. Janet, keep 'em coming, lit'l lady.

Here's another Bob/Janet combination post.

Bob, here is a picture of my sweet little Molly.....it was taken last year. Notice the cute little scarf she has on....it was from work, H&R Block, she is our mascot for our office, she knows when I get the scarf out, she is going along with me.... Molly

Janet, she is a very cute dog and I'm sure the office personnel love having her at the office.

Bobo, I am off to work, I will send you some more tonight, Dave went to the mountains with his scouting buddies this weekend, so I have the whole evening to post away......if you don't get them all on, that is fine. Maybe I should start that blog that Risa was trying to get me to do??

And the Slider....(turtle) I believe that is what you have a picture of there....is exactly what we have...we also have Red Eared Sliders....they look the same except they have red "ears" on the sides of their heads. When Joe died, between him and his buddy Matt, who I have talked about often here. Had 12 turtles in a kiddie swimming pool at Matt's house in his bedroom. After the pond was finished, Matt and his dear Mother (who passed away two years after Joe did) brought the turtles up to 'release' them into the pond...it was quite a day for all of us.....finally a 'part of Joe' in his pond..

Quite ironic that Joe drowned, when he loved the water and everything about it so much.

Janet, that's perfectly alright. You ought to hear some of the names that my friends jokingly call me, such as "DragNasty" & "FuzzyLip". <chuckle>

Kristen, after taking my morning walk, I'm sitting here for awhile watching some of my favorite B/W westerns on TV. My sweetie has driven to Cleveland (Texas) to visit with grandkids.

ROFLOL !! Sorry folks, I just read Bob's comment about him taking a morning walk and I'm sitting here laughing my head off... Darlene has him so spoiled that he won't even get up from the computer to get his own coffee and the only walking I've seen him doing in since I met him a few years back is to his car to drive to the diner, LOL ... Ya'll need to get on to him, doesn't do us any good here ...

This is just too funny!!! Bob, that is one thing I love about nobody knowing me 'personally' on here....that I could 'tell' you that I took a walk and I didn't.....LOL...but that's ok, as long as you are here encouraging all of us. Jeri, thanks for letting us into the secret...

Kristen...thank you, Little Miss Molly is quite the 'ham' when it comes to getting her picture taken. She seems to pose when I get out the camera. She is a little sweet heart. She ....by the way.....is a little "Southern Belle" she was born in the south end of South Carolina, we went down to pick her up when she was two months old. And have never regretted it, she is such a sweet heart.

Would you come up and pull some weeds for me too??? I need to get the garden ready for mulching it, so I don't have to weed it all summer.

Heck !! Jeri let the cat out of the bag, by golly. I do occasionally walk down to the RV office to retrieve our mail, about 50 yards down and 50 yards back, by golly. Most of my exercise is done whilst I'm sitting in my recliner chair, getting up, going to the bathroom several times per day(sometimes I walk fairly fast on these trips to the bathroom) <chuckle> or reaching across to the coffee table for my TV remote. This exercises my arms. <chuckle> I also do several knee bends whilst hanging onto the kitchen sinks to balance myself. My sweetie Darlene giggles when she witnesses this. Really !!!! Yep, and as Jeri has said, I do a bit of walking back and forth to my car at home and at the Magnolia Diner. LOL

Love ya' anyhow, Jeri.

LOL.....Bob, just wanted to tell you that I have taken my second walk since I have been home this evening....out the front door to the corner of the house for Miss Molly to potty and back to the computer...LOL....does that qualify as a 'walk"???

AND....on a sweeter note, while I was out...I looked up to the Heavens and our sweet loved ones are up there just 'shining down on us' this evening...it is a BEAUTIFUL warm evening here in PA, I had bare feeties and it felt great to walk on the new grass coming up and not be shivering my hinny off. It is an absolutely beautiful moonlit/starlit night here at my house. Kind of glad that Molly "drug" me outside at this hour............to look at the beautiful night sky....

Love to you all..............

Yep !! It certainly qualifies.

We sit out on our front porch deck quite often and gaze at the Heavenly skies, late in the evening.

Yawn!! Going to bed now B-4 Darlene bops me on the head. According to the Time Change it is now midnight. My carriage will be transformed into a pumpkin, by golly at the stroke of midnight. Good Night

Bob...........are you sending 'messages' to Molly??? She had now DEMANDED that I take her out again.....just a little over 45 minutes ago she just went out.....and well.............we almost took a jog this time. She caught sight of a bunny running across the front yard and wanted me to follow!!!! NOT....that is just a little too much for right before midnight.

On a more serious note.....that is one of my 'excuses' for getting Molly to begin with. I was beginning to be 'very lazy' here at home with nobody but my hubby and I, and I would sit around the house all day long. SO....as motivation to move, I got a puppy to MAKE ME MOVE. I thought it was a good way to make me get up off of my butt and walk, even if only to the front yard and back..... a reason to get out of bed on those days that I just simply didn't feel like getting up. She has been my motivation.

My doctor told me last time I was in to see him that he was giving me homework until my next appointment in April....that I needed to find something FUN to do each day. Strange thing for him to tell me, but it made perfect sense when I thought about it. As I think I have told you, I am on a 'mission' to lose weight, and have lost 80 lbs now....long way to still go, but I am getting there....so, he told me that in the past I would 'eat for fun' so, now that I was no longer eating for fun.......I needed to replace it with something else that was fun. Soooooooo, only thing I could come up with, was to start walking with my little Miss Molly each day. Take a walk down the road, etc. each day with her...after all that is why I orginally got her, was to motivate me....so what better fun to have than walk with her each day. It is so much fun just looking at the world through her eyes....like spying a bunny at almost midnight in the front yard!!!

So......for those who need an excuse to get a pet...there you go....that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Janet, Kristen, Margo and all ...

Sorry but I couldn't pass it up on Bob not listening to his doctor, he had really gotten slow at walking before he went to the hospital and is doing so much better now, he's up in a flash and walks like a young rooster... I only pick on him because I want him to be here another 50 years, that would really make him an old fart, LOL ...

To be honest, I don't think that we could go through another round around this area not knowing if Bob was going to make it or not and I'd rather pick on him than to loose him...

Kristen, Bob gives excellent advise, he honestly does .. he knows what to do, it's just easier to get other's to do it, LOL ... he'll be there for you though through thick and thin... I don't believe that I've ever seen him in the years that I've known him that you don't hear those three very special words, "I love you" ... we have everyone in Magnolia using them now and you can always tell when you hear it that they have been around Bob...

All of you take care, fixing to head out the door and run a couple of local warrants ... don't think I'll be chasing any of them through the woods tonight though, it's beautiful outside but I've been up and working them since a little after 5 this morning and I'm about pooped...

Love to all,

Jeri, I know it is so much more fun picking on 'poor ol bob' than anything else...and I can understand why you do it...and me too. He is just way too much fun.......and so full of love. I love him to pieces.....sounds like you should be going to bed for the night, instead of going out........take it easy and take care of yourself. It is so good to have had a chance to 'get to know you' lately.

Hey Jeri & Janet,
Thanks for the bouquet of flowers(your compliments) and no, I don't mind a bit gettin' picked on. As I have said many times, "I love everyone, but there are some folks that I just don't like". Love is a very important word in my life. Too many folks seem to be bashful using that wonderful word.

Janet, different folks with different strokes, we don't have a house pet, since we live in a 36' travel trailer even though Jeri has a very cute lit'l miniature poodle in her trailer. Precious lit'l pet, by golly. My daughter purchased a dog for my sweetie Darlene about 10yrs ago. See our lit'l pet dog here............

Our lit'l poochie is quite weather beaten but as the sign in his mouth says "You are always welcome to our lit'l castle" Your suggestion for dog ownership is a wonderful idea for motivating a person to walk more.

That would have been hilarious watching you and Molly chasing after that bunny. <chuckle>

Love ya'

Ol' Bob

P.S. Lately I've had a medical symptom called "Jerks". Each and everytime I stand up, my rear-end jerks me back down. LOL

Margo,

Been in Law Enforcement 25 years without being shot and I wouldn't want Bob to have to pay for the crime of shooting me... I fixing to retire so I'll save the tid bits for after I get moved way away from here, LOL ... It's my hold over him, the threat of telling all of you guys that love him so much and that he loves ... It keeps him in line, sorta, hehehe ...

Love ya Bob and love to each of you...

Bob, Did you pick Jeri's flowers out of her garden??? Is that how you got the bouquet of flowers??

I love your puppy....but I can tell you that there is nothing except for the grandkids that can give more love than a dog..........well, maybe my hubby and kids too...LOL...but I do love my little Molly, she gives such unconditional love always. And she does try to get me out of the house and walk. Today she 'drug' my butt out for a walk, and the 'old man' across the street...I live on Schoolhouse Road....he lives in the Old School House, I think since the days that it was a one room school house....But Molly LOVES HIM....that is where she looks as soon as we walk out the door. Today he was out cleaning out his garden and Molly spied him, and HAD to go over and 'chat' with him for a moment. She has adored him since she was a pup......he has NEVER took an interest in any of the animals that we had in the past, (we have lived here for over 32 years and he was here when I got here) but Molly caught his eye from day one....and she knows that he loves her. She 'struts' when he is watching..it is funny to watch. BUT...while we were out, I got some pictures of her with "Joe's garden"....the one I tried really hard to get was of my "Gift of Life" rosebush....kind of dead at this time of the year, but you will get the idea of it. It came from the Portland Rose Gardens about 10 years ago. The OPO out in that area had it sent to me, and it arrived the day before Mother's Day that year....much like a gift from my son.............ok, I have rambled enough....Love ya,

Janet, your messages are very interesting. Anything about your life up there in Pennsylvania is a very welcomed sight on this thread.

As for the bouquet of flowers, back in my trucking days, if someone paid you with a compliment, you most always thanked them for the "Bouquet of Flowers"

Thanks for the info Bob, good to know what was meant by that one...I thought you went down to her house and picked a bouquet from her garden....I guess I am just a little dense sometimes. And by the way....the old brick 'house' in the first picture on this thread, is the "One room School House" that Molly's friend lives in....he is a sweet old guy.

oh, it is the two story one on the right of the picture. Not the rancher almost straight in front....a "Biker Dude" lives there....and Molly likes him too, he rides a Harley, works at Harley too....and of course the bike reminds Molly of her "Mikey, my son".....he rides one too, and when she hears a Harley she is always up in the window looking to see if "Her" Mikey is coming home...LOL...

Bob, Yes, she would be a boxer. Her mommy and daddy are both pure breed boxers, so she is from good lines. She just has the most wonderful sweet personality. She is the sweetest, most loveable little thing. She is only 50 lbs and is almost three years old. THat is a bit small for a boxer, but I am glad she is petite. Her daddy, Buddy, is about 85 lbs and her mommy is about 75 lbs. So, not sure where she got her tininess from, but I really didn't want a 'big dog' when she was 'forced' upon me....but she was a gift, and how could one say no to those beautiful eyes??

One day a few weeks ago....we had a giant rain storm come thru. Jamison went out on the driveway after....the sun was back out and it was hot. He said he'd been adopted as a new pet owner.....a tiny slider turtle was just sitting smack in the middle of our drive way waiting for his new owner to scoop him up and take care of him. He's so cute. and I'd forgotten by that point about this thread and Joe's turtle. So the next day we went to the pet store to buy a little container of turtle food. We left with $150 worth of turtle "necessities". sigh. But guess who just loves to sit in front of that tank and watch it and the fish and snails? of course, me! It's very relaxing. I'm allergic to most other pets.....so I've always had to get my pet "fix" with turtles, birds, hamsters, etc. Actually, I still have Sarah's 2 finches. Her boyfriend bought them for her....and they named them "Sarah and Kyle". Sometimes I just get pissed at those birds for still being just fine and dandy when my girl isn't. I mean really!

She couldn't wait to get her own apartment away from my allergies and get a puppy or a kitten!

Speaking of pets, this is a pic of my daughter Cindy's pets.

This lit'l bird has learned to open the TupperWare sugar container and help himself to the sugar.

Kristen, I enjoyed reading about the turtle.
