Well, I just had the 24 hour ph monitoring, and let me just say that was full of kicks and giggles. I couldn't believe how miserable that was!! Anyway, my docs are suspicious of acid aspirating into my lungs, but we'll know more once the readings are interpreted from the test. Has anyone had fundoplication to correct this problem? I am 3 months out, so I'm not looking forward to recovering from something else, but I know I've got to protect these new lungs. Be straight and lay it out for me... how bad/good was the experience?

Hello Jo.
Sorry to see you up so early in the morning. Never heard of Fundoplication so I went up to page top and used the search box, entered it, and GERD (my daughter has that) appears. Also, there are three different threads within Transplant buddies, on this subject.
I hope you get rid of this monkey and wish you well.
Keep us posted.

Jo,
My hubby is going to have this done as soon as he gets better from pneumonia. He has a large hiatal hernia that is causing aspiration and pneumonia. His PFT's have been going down each week and when we saw the doc in the clinic last Monday hubby was admitted to the hospital. He is on 3 different IV antibiotics and just finished 3 days of IV steroids. His doc said he can't leave the hospital until everything is fixed. Also when he was first admitted they did a cat scan with contrast and he has a small blood clot in his lung. They then did an ultrasound of his legs and found one in his leg. They put a filter in yesterday to prevent any clots from traveling from the leg.

They are going to try and fix the hiatal hernia either this coming week or next but he will be in the hospital until that is done. They are also going to do the nissen fundo something. I'm not sure of the exact name. It will be done laparascopically.

So hubby will be in the hospital all through the holidays. I just came home to feed our dogs. Thanks God that we live close to the hospital. Please pray for him. He is going through a lot.

Lynn

Dear Lynn,

I will pray for your husband of course and for your peace of mind. It must be really hard on you in every way to see so much happening with your husband. Sounds like once they can do this wrap, his lungs will greatly improve.

Dear Jo,
I had a full nissen fundoplication in 1995 to treat what was thought to be acid reflux at the time. I had mine performed through an open procedure. It did help to prevent the refluxing for me, although I noticed I had more trouble with belching afterward, meaning it happened more often which would embarrass me. I did fairly well afterward until about 2000-01 or so when I began to have trouble swallowing. This gradually got worse. It was finally decided to take down my nissen fundoplication and during this open procedure, a build up of a lot of scar tissue was discovered that had to be removed. The swallowing then improved, although my reflux did come back, and I developed other symptoms that lead me to be diagnosed with gastroparesis, or a delay in stomach emptying. I do not know for certain if this latter was caused by the surgeries or something else as the doctor who first diagnosed me with gastroparesis thinks I may have had it before my first surgery and may have been misdiagnosed by the doctors that were seeing me at the time. Having both procedures done openly rather than through a minimally invasive procedure may have also made a difference, but I am not sure. I hope that if this is the route you need to go, you will have a much better experience with this than I did. Much time has passed since my first procedure, so hopefully doctors have more knowledge about how to better go about it. I will be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers, and I wish you only the best. Many hugs.

Dear Lynn,
I hope that your husband's surgery will go well and he will be able to recover and heal as swiftly as possible. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Many hugs are being sent your way on the wings of hope.

Thanks for your great information. I met with my transplant surgeon, and he will be doing a partial wrap(variation of the fundoplication) next week. I have the reflux issue as well as poor espohagus motility, so he will be working to fix both. I also have a large gallstone, which I didn't know I had, so another gastro surgeon will be coming in to remove that before my surgeon fixes the other. The hope is that by fixing my acid reflux, which is pretty severe, my lung function will improve. I'm dreading surgery again, as I am only 20 weeks out of my transplant. But, if it corrects the problem and protects these precious lungs, then I'm game. Dreading the pain again, though....

Jo:

I hope all goes well. I am sure having surgery again is not what you wanted to do, but like you said - getting all that fixed will help keep those new lungs healthy.

I am sure you will get good pain meds, so just take them so you can heal quickly and get back to loving life!!

Let us know how things go!

God Bless!
