Hi all!

I am 13 months post double lung transplant. In November I noticed that my blood pressure was continuing to creep upwards. I talked to my PCP and he put me on Lopressor (25mg). I saw a slight decrease in blood pressure, but it still fluctuates quite a bit.

What I have noticed is that I feel bloated/swollen in my feet, hands and face. I have been on Medrol for over a year, so I am not contributing this new symptom to the steroids. I can't get my rings on and off and just at Thanksgiving time I was afraid that I would lose them because they were sliding off. I also wake up feeling like my face and eyes are all swollen. My hands are noticably swollen and I have noticed that my socks make marks in my legs.

It is really uncomfortable for my hands. Some days it is hard to make a fist - my skin pulls so tight. Usually, I will notice that by the end of the day my hands and face are not so swollen. It basically takes all day for it to go down and then I start all over again the next day.

Has anyone else had this experienc with Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate)? I am going to talk to my PCP this week. Any other suggestions for a good med that lowers blood pressure?

Thanks bunches!

God Bless!

Hi Karen,
Can't help you with your question directly but perhaps if you posted it in the Heart/Lung forum you may get more responses. While I had the moon face with the steroids - sounds more like fluid retention - are you taking a diaretic? If not on one have you called your Team to check in with the issue? No need to respond to me just throwing some things out for your consideration.
I hope your ? gets resolved.

I don't know about that med. Can't really help you.

But because my bloodpressure was at 145/98 and they don't want it to be 100 they wanted to lower mine.

They gave me Enalapril, it works well for me. No side effects

My doctor suggested Norvasc to me, but I have not yet started it yet so don't have a personal experience. Good luck!

Karen, I too take metropolol and have been ever since I was on dialysis. At that time, I took 100mg two times daily. I also took 20 mg of lisinopril. After transplant, they immediately cut the dose of metropolol to 50 mg twice a day. It has been cut in half twice since then. They told me after transplant, no more lisinopril. I now take 12.5 mg twice a day. I have not had a problem retaining water, which I am assuming is what you are saying. Are you also keeping an eye on your salt consumption? Just a question I had to ask, no offense intended.

Thanks everyone!

I didn't know there were so many blood pressure meds out there. I have never had to deal with high blood pressure, so this is new to me.

I am not sure what is going on. This week my blood pressure has been all over the place - high, then normal, then on the lower side, then high again. I try to take it at the same time each day. I have not had as much swelling the past week either. Weird.

Cisco - I do watch my salt intake. Not as carefully as you do, but I don't eat any added salt and I watch the labels of foods and stay away from high salt food. I am a pretty plain eater and always have been, so keeping away from salt has not been hard for me. The only time I really miss it is on tomatoes and eggs - I know I am weird.

I am going to keep watching things closely and then make my doctor's appointment.

Thanks so much for all your input!

God Bless!
