I had a kidney transplant in 2007, and was blessed to have a baby boy in 2009. Recently my doctor switched me back to Cellcept from Imuran. I feel better on Cellcept, but am extremely concerned about birth control, especially since Cellcept causes birth defects. I've heard you need to use two forms of contraception because of the interaction of Cellcept and hormones. Does this include the Mirena IUD? My gynecologist wants to put one in due to my heavy menstrual periods. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks. |

Hey Ruby! I have Mirena -- I've had since pre-tx. I would talk to your transplant clinic. Mine wasn't entirely happy that I have an IUD because there is a higher risk of infection. That said, I have problematic periods, and Mirena has been great for me -- minimal periods, no fuss, just there unobtrusively. I plan to keep it! LOL. Despite the wishes of my clinic ... then again, they don't see that many young moms who have double lung transplants so perhaps they are just a little over-cautious, and that's not a bad thing either! On the actual merits of Mirena: yahoo! LOVE. If your clinic doesn't like the idea, I would try Nuvoring. It would be my next choice other than Mirena -- minimal amounts of drug in your system but enough to regulate periods, and put in once a month. That's it! LOL. Good Luck, Ruby and I hope you and baby are doing really well! Love, Yeages
