I had my OLT back in 10/2009. Since then, I had experienced loose stools or even mild diarrhea all the way until I read the article, entitled"Organ Transplantation: Food Drug Interactions" from transplant buddies blogs. The article mentioned that Prograf should not take with calcium, magnesium, antacids, or supplements. And Cellcept should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after calcium, magnesium, antacids, or supplements.
As soon as I change my intake of daily Calcium and Magnesium in between my Prograf and Cellcept meds, life has back to normal track. WOW!

Although the manufacturers instructions for the drug Tacrolimus/Prograf says exactly what Raywood says my transplant team and nephrologist let me take it (and Cellcept) with food and with calcium tablets. In fact, I take all my drugs/supplements with food to minimize stomach problems. Each person is different and so you should check with your transplant team to get their approval for what you decide to do. Tacrolimus is particularly interesting since its presence and amount are measured in the blood each time I get a blood test and my numbers have been quite stable (I've had my kidney for 1 yr now). The team stresses not to worry about what you eat or take into your body (except for grapefruit) but to be consistent so that your blood tests can indicate the true status of your condition and not to experiment with herbs/alternative meds without consulting them. My transplant team now has me taking 1.5 gms Cellcept and 2.5mg Tacrolimus. Except for some continued lethargy I am doing very well and I estimate I am now back to the condition I was in before the transplant.

I agree with Bill s I've had my new kidney going on three years and have taken vitamin supplements since day one with no side effects whatsoever. This is not to say it would be this way for everyone, but definitely don't count out supplements totally; check with your docs first :-)
Come celebrate with me that every day something has tried to kill me and failed.

Raywood- Awesome! You made my day.

It is my belief that when you combine the drugs with the supplements there can be problems overtime with malabsorption issues. The new research says to take your supplements hours away from drugs. Saw this on Dr. Oz. and like I posted in the above link from the hospital UWhealth.

Not all centers are up on the latest research regarding drug interactions. I have found that pharmacies are like that too.

Many years ago I learned from my tx coordinator that if you do take your magnesium with prograf, the magnesium will deplete the prograf meaning that you would potentially need more drug in your system.

Ciao!

So, I take my Neoral at 9a and 9p and my Rapamune at 1p. When should I take my magox? 11 and 5? How far removed should they be, I wonder!
