Ran 4 miles tonight, my third straight day of running. Been out of town for work the past couple of weeks so I'm trying to catch up on my miles. I hope everybody has been doing well.

Ran another 4 miles tonight. A little humid out but was a good run. We're getting into some fall weather here in Iowa and that will make for some good runs.

I re-signed with my trainer at the gym yesterday. I have not worked with him for three months. Thought I would be okay on my own, but really felt I had lost focus. Our first session yesterday was great - I had progressed in strength more so than I thought I had. He was very pleased, but we recognized some areas to work. I am looking forward to our weekly sessions.

Well, I have not posted here in quite some time. Had not been feeling well, amongst other things. I went to the gym yesterday and walked my five miles. Gee, it sure felt good to exercise. I have lifting today. I have managed to keep up on that, even though my walking has been limited for about the last two and a half weeks.

Welcome back Cisco kid

Glad to hear you are back in Action with your exercise routine.

What routine would you design for a lady who wants to tone up using cardio and free weights?

I had another good 4 mile run tonight. I've been starting to push myself harder each time and I'm really feeling strong. Today marks 4 months since my sister died following the transplant. I can't believe it has been that long and how good I feel physically in my recovery. Running has helped be so much both physically and mentally.

Great Charlie

I lost my Grandmother and feel very drained. I exercised yesterday for the first time in ten days. I hope to exercise every day starting tomorrow. If I want to remain healthy, I must do this.

When my GrandFather Died many years ago, I went out for a jog. I remember crying and had a feeling that is what my Grandfather would want me to do.

Glad that you are taking care of yourself.

I ended up with three miles today. In addition, I had the following routine:

One Legged Squats 3 sets of 15
Short Bar Curl 1 set of 20 at 45#
1 set of 20 at 55#
1 set of 15 at 55# **
Boxing 3 sets of 50
Inclined Curls 1 set of 15 at 15#
Declined Curls 2 sets of 35

**I don't know why my personal trainer calls this a short bar curl. It is an Olympic sized barbell.

The declined curls are actually my favorite exercise, because I know that they are helping me with my abdominals. But man, are they a bear.

Heather, thank you for asking. I am doing okay. I think maybe that once I start getting up at my usual time (5 a.m.) I will be doing better, but the point is that I am able to do it. I am having some problems with my blood sugars, but that may be do to portion control. ( I am trying to do something about that, too) I got up this morning at 6, but we did a lot of work around the house yesterday, getting the greenhouse ready for winter, or at least late fall, plus a few other things

I am going to go for a bike ride this morning. I have got to do something about my blood sugars. I don't know if it is because I have been sick with the CMV, or what it is, but they have been higher than they were before, and I just cannot have that. I am due at 1:30 to workout and LadyDi and myself are going for another bike ride tonight before I go over to get on the treadmill for awhile.

I got in a five mile run last night and it went well. This is just such an awesome time to run here in Iowa. The weather is so nice. I'm signed up for a 10 mile race on Sunday. A little longer than I should be doing but I think I'll be fine. I'm really looking forward to it. You're doing a great job Cisco and I hope you're well.

Too bad Charlie and Cisco don't live close to each other..you could ride together!

Cisco..has your blood sugar only been running high since you had the CMV? Could the Valcyte be causing it? I thought you were done with that though...did your center have anything to say about it? I hope it returns to normal soon.

Well, Heather, I went over and got on the bike this morning and rode ten miles. I will eat some lunch and hit the treadmill for another five miles. I don't think it is the valcyte. I think it is the fact that I was very active and all of the sudden, I stopped. I felt like doing nothing for a couple of weeks. I have learned that after meals, I have to do something. I cannot just sit around and take up space. I have been getting my blood tested for going on three weeks and I have heard nothing. I am very sure that I would if they had some result that would warrant it. Thanks for asking.

Treadmill 5.5 miles
Stationary Bike 19 miles

I will not have too much of a chance to get on the machines tomorrow as it is my lift day and this weekend we are headed for Michigan. (Friday morning) I thought I should do as much as possible today.

After a shower, headed for the gym. We are getting a shower outside, unfortunately. I was planning on spraying all of the outside orchids today so that they are ready to put in the greenhouse, but Mother Nature intervened. Guess I will have to do that tomorrow and just exercise today.

Me too.

I am a bit in a worry, that I miss a regular practice. Still didn't found a way to combine daily life and regular practiced training as practiced in the Rehab.
But I soon will hopefully went twice a week to a medical trainings therapy center and they can evaluate my workout there, if I overdo or not.

This what I have done in the past 7 days:
4 times Ergometer, 15 to 25 Watt, 5 to 17 minutes, 1min. Intervall
2 times walking 5 stairs, 3 and 5 repetition
5 times dumbbell training, bizeps and trizeps
Walking 1065meter with my walker
And I had 6 times Physiotherapy.

Best FEV1 = 0,89Liter, Friday evening
Worst FEV1 = 0,71 Liter last week Thuesday

I ran my 10 mile race on Sunday and did much better than I thought I would. I beat my goal by seven minutes so I was very happy. I ran another 5 miles last night with my Monday night group. I'm really feeling stronger these days. My next race I think will be a half marathon on October 19th. My goal has been to run a half marathon within six months of surgery and this will do it by about 3 weeks. I need to keep pushing hard and I'll be just fine.

Well, I got another 10 miles on the bike last night. This morning, I am going to take it easy. After breakfast, I am going to get on the treadmill. I am hoping to walk five miles. If I don't, no big deal, but that is this morning's goal. After lunch, I am going to the park for another walk. After dinner, I am going to walk again. I have been trying to alternate on bike and treadmill for my aerobic/cardio training.

This morning, I went 11 miles on the bike. I also walked a mile on the treadmill as a warm up. My routine today was a little bit different as far as the exercises were concerned. It was as follows:
Leg Press 3 sets of 20 @ 340#
Bench Press 1 set of 15 @ 90#
3 sets of 12 @ 160#
Reverse Dips 1 set of 20
Triceps Kickback 2 sets of 20 @ 8#
Declined Situps 2 sets of 50
My personal trainer wanted to know where those extra situps came from.

And I did stair training.
Slowly, 20 steps.

Frank, ol' buddy, good for you. Nice to have you back on the weekly accomplishments. Hope that you are doing better. I am. I think that I have just about kicked that darn CMV. I think I may have a couple of weeks more of the Valcyte, but I feel much, much better, So far this week, I have 5 miles on the treadmill, 6 "aerobic miles" as far as weight training is concerned and 73 miles on the recumbent bike!

I'm glad you kicked the CMV Cisco.
I think CMV is dormant in many people and it only is dangerous to immunsuppressed people like us. Please be aware that sport reduces the immunsystem too - so please do not overdo it. :-)

Yes, I am feeling a bit better now, not as much as I want but my FEV1 isn't dropping that much and more stable now.
Walked today 120m with my walker, but what is more important, we sit down inmy car and I drove it 30min. through the town! First tim since may I guess I did that....

LadyDi wants another bike ride this evening. I am going another couple of miles. I have gotten to uncharted territory this week with my exercise, and it feels darned good. A total of 86 miles this week. I start again tomorrow with a workout in the morning, first thing.

Well, I walked another 5 and a half and had a workout worth 4 and a half aerobic miles. We may go down to the park about a mile from the house for a bike ride this evening. My five and a half today consisted of 1.5 on the treadmill and about a four mile "nature" hike with the wife out near Lake Springfield. Workout consisted of the following:
Reverse Dips 3 sets of 20
Triceps Kick 1 set of 20 @ 8#
V Pushdowns 1 set of 20 @ 50#
2 sets of 20 @ 40#
Lunges 3 sets of 12
Pushups 1 set of 20
Inclined DB Curls 2 sets of 15 @ 15#(alternating)
EZ Curls 1 set of 20 @ 65#
2 sets of 15 @ 65#

Well, I have gotten on the exercise bike and the treadmill today, but I am not done yet, so I will wait to post those numbers. However, I also did lift weights today and here are those numbers:
Lunges 2 sets of 12 @ 8#
Leg Presses 3 sets of 20 @ 340#
Bench Press 1 set of 15 @ 90#
2 sets of 12 @ 160#
1 set of 12 @ 165#
Inclined Bench 1 set of 15@ 90#
1 set of 12 @ 110#
1 set of 20 @ 110#
1 set of 13 @110#
Declined Situps 1 set of 50
1 set of 51

You would not think that lunges would be that much harder with weights (even small ones), but it sure is that way.

Ended up with 17 miles on the bike yesterday. Also had a killer workout today. I had ridden 17 miles on the bike before I went in today for my regular workout. I like to get on the treadmill for a mile before I do workout. I have been doing that on the random setting, so that it changes the incline, but not the speed of the treadmill. In addition, I did the following:

Step ups 2 sets of 20
Bosu pushups 2 sets of 30
Short bar pullup 1 set of 20
Short bar curl 1 set of 20
Military Press 1 set of 20 @ 20#
Bike 10 minutes (5 min. @ 10, 5 min @ 7)*

* Usually I have this pegged at 5

I had 6 bike miles last night and 25 today. That puts me at 102 aerobic miles for the week so far and I have a three mile walk tomorrow. I will probably be moving our niece tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry that this thread has become so long, Risa. I know I post daily instead of weekly, but if I posted weekly, my posts would be as long as my leg. Yesterday, I walked a mile in that Walkathon, but the important thing was that I collected $435 for Special Olympics to buy equipment with, which was the second most of all the money collected. I walked a mile this morning, before the following workout:
Bent Rows 3 sets of 15 @ 40#
V Pushdowns 3 sets of 15 @ 45#
Lunges 3 sets of 12
Ball Squats 3 sets of 20
Bosu Pushups sets of 34, 33 and 33

1.26 am - can't sleep - dewatering again.

Cisco: I wish I would be able to post more often here :-)
Yesterday I did dumb bells 3x10 Bizeps.
Had so much administrative things to do yesterday and was full of water again that I had no energy to do any training or even went out of my flat for a walk in the sun. :-( It was a very stressfull day.

A day off today. Much deserved, I think. I will probably do some running around. I need to go to the grocery store and I am going to the produce stand to get some cole crop vegetables--brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Think I will make soup tonight since the little woman is going to the gym.

Walked yesterday 80m without the walker. My physiotherapist walked with me and had the walker to have me sit down for breathing breaks. I carried the oxygen stroller.

Later in the afternoon I went outside the house with walker, first time alone, and ran in front of the house up and down. 220m - 30min.

That's good, Frank. I might have to see a psychotherapist after today's exercise. My evil trainer has a dastardly workout planned. It will be circuit work, which makes it harder yet. I am going to go for a short while this morning and see if I can get about six miles on the bike.

My first time at the breath-rehab conducted by a former pneumologist of mine: Doc. Taube She cordially welcomed me heavy breathing there.

The I did training with trainer Mr. Kaufmann.
Did 3 machines including leg press 3x10 - the others 3x15 rep.

After that 20min. relaxing including electrostimulation of the leg muscles. Fall asleep. :-)

I was there for 1 hour.
Next week I have 2 appointments.
Feel well after that and enjoyed it!

I bet it felt good, Frank. Even though most of my exercise is done inside, whether lifting weights or on the treadmill or bike, every once in awhile, I like to get out and walk. We have a nature walk that we can take (if I can get LadyDi to go with me) that is about 4 miles. Beautiful scenery and the whole shot. I modified my treadmill workout today since I have no bike at my brother's house. As a warmup, it's 5 minutes at 0-2% incline, 1 minute at 4% incline, 1 minute at 5% incline, 1 minute at 10% incline, 2 minutes at 5% incline, 1 minute at 10% incline, 1 minute at 5% incline, 1 minute at 10% incline, 2 minutes at 5% incline and 5 minutes at 2-4% incline. Then I did my normal Sunday exercises.
Lunges 3 sets of 12
DB Ball Squats 3 sets of 20@ 10#
Reverse Dips 2 sets of 20 @10#, 1 set of 16 @ 10#

Cisco, I just wonder how much time it takes you to drive 64 km on the bike? 4 hours? How much time do you spend with workout a day?
6km walking I can imagine better :-) Must take1,5 hours or so.

Today I have my 2nd appointment at the www.atemreha.de studio.
I am looking forward to it and I am also a bit excited.

Frank, the bike usually takes about four minutes per mile. I did the forty miles in two parts. I go in the morning about 8 a.m., right after I have taken my pills. I get on the bike and go. About an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes in, (depending on how hard I have hit it) I will slow to have a cool down. I go home, eat a good lunch, and if I am not lifting that day, I let it digest (about 1.5 hours) and I go back and repeat. Monday was the heaviest I have hit the bike. Usually, I will go for about twenty-five miles total but I decided to hit it hard yesterday. My schedule will be a little different today. I am going twenty miles this morning, hitting the carbs and protein hard at lunch and walking a mile on the treadmill before my forty-five minute lifting session this afternoon. To go twenty miles takes about one and a half to one and three quarters of an hour. Cardio is the one thing that has helped me to lose weight. Working out three times a week has helped me to keep the muscle.

I am shooting for the stars this week with the recumbent bike. I have 135 miles on it as of this morning. I want to go back to the gym this afternoon and get another 20 miles and again tomorrow and get the last 20 for 175 miles for the week. Then, on Sunday it's treadmill and workout first and then a six mile walk. I will be very close to 200 miles for the week.

Short Bar Pullup 2 at 30

Looks like from now on, I will be posting here on a weekly basis and not as I have in the past. You can find those posts on my health and fitness blog. My weekly goal is to have 20 miles six days on the recumbent bike, three workouts with a minimum of 45 minutes each, and at least 3 miles on the treadmill.

For the week, if everything goes as planned, without that walk I want to take on Sunday, my totals are as follows:
Bike 121 miles
Treadmill 3 miles
Lifting 9 miles**
Total 133 miles

** This is 1 mile for every 15 minutes of rigorous exercise. There is a possibility that these will be more than 9 miles as I usually push myself a little harder with more exercise on Sunday than I would get during the week

High speed is what I cannot handle. I have never been particularly fast, even as a kid. I have had no problems with the inclines. My quads are kind of sore today from doing leg presses yesterday. Also, when I gave blood this morning. the lady didn't get all of it the first time and I had to go back, so I have a sore arm (bruised, too) I hate when that happens.

I have decided to cut my workouts back. I will get on the bike or treadmill four days a week and workout three days a week. I am going to see how that works as I have had two great workouts this week, skipping the days in between. If I can keep losing weight and have my blood sugar stay down, this will be my normal schedule.

In my newly cut back form of exercise routine this week, my totals were as follows:
Treadmill 10 aerobic miles
Workouts 11 aerobic miles
Recumbent Bike 36 aerobic miles
This is an experiment to see if this works. So far, my weight has not fluctuated that much. All I want to do is to get through the holidays without gaining a bunch of weight that I have to take back off. I still have about 25 pounds that I would like to lose.

Workouts 11 aerobic miles
Recumbent Bike 34 aerobic miles
Total is 54 aerobic miles
I have been trying to get my heart up as much as I can for these sessions, be it workout or cardiovascular. I can tell you that I did circuit work on Thursday and I am still sore on Saturday.

Lately, I have been only working out twice per day only for 20 minute intervals. My treadmill is not working so I am working out on the eliptical and that will kill my back so less time is working for me.

I look like Chester from Gunsmoke if I get on one of those contraptions. I have a blister on one of my smaller toes, so I am going to forgo the treadmill until it heals. But I just get on the bike and go like heck. I am taking a much needed day off tomorrow and I am back at it on Monday, whether it is the bike or the treadmill.

I am going to try something new today when I am lifting. I have had Thursdays as a circuit day. but today, I am really going after it. I am going to attempt to get 30 sets in today. I am not real sure I can do it, but I am going to try so as to make it an aerobic session more than it all ready has been. It will probably be a little bit tougher to do it this way, but I am ready for a challenge. Keep your fingers crossed, I will post to my blog later today to let you know how it went.

Risa, I have been maintaining at the following levels:
Recumbent Bike approximately 30 miles per week (three sessions)
Treadmill 12-15 miles (three sessions at 1 before workouts and 3 sessions at 3-4 on days when I don't lift)
Weight lifting sessions (three per week) I have been trying to make my lifting sessions as intense as possible by taking less time between exercises. After losing six pounds since the first of January, my weight loss has slowed and I have not quite figured it out, but I keep going and eating the way that I am supposed to. Hopefully, I will catch another break soon,

Risa, I do not eat bread, although I do eat wraps--just 150 calories, 24 g carbohydrates, 6 g protein, 5g dietary fiber. I also eat whole wheat pasta and things that although they are carbs, have health benefits associated with them. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

This week, it looks like it will be 84 aerobic miles. The reason for the increase is the increase in cardio on days when I don't lift. I am spending 1-3 hours a day in the gym, six days a week.

For the week ending 2/1/09, I had 84 aerobic miles. What I am attempting to do is keep my weight the same or a little less on days when I don't lift. On the days that I do lift, that appears to be the days when I lose weight.

Risa, it is all a matter of my mindset at this point. I appreciate the comments about how I motivate people. I does make me feel good. I also get comments from the folks at the gym about how well they think I am doing. One of the personal trainers has told me many times that he knows that "you get it Gregg." There are folks who work out where I do that miss appointments or that come in three times a week and exercise for forty-five minutes and just don't watch what they eat. Or, they go home and lay on the couch and watch TV. These are people who have no disabilities at all, just laziness. They complain about plateauing. Well, so do I, but I do a lot more activity than they do. I am in the gym or at my brother's house to exercise six days a week I know they think that I have lost my ever-loving mind, but I want to be able to live as close to a normal life as I can get without having all of the trouble I could have if I did not take care of myself. My wife gave me a new lease on life, and I don't want to make it all for naught. I have had some encouragement from folks here and I really do appreciate it. Just remember folks, we are all in this together!

Well, you saw what I had to say about all of us being in this together. I have given her encouragement recently, as she has decided to go back to really trying to drop some more weight. She said that she wants to firm herself up, but I think that she will find that she will end up doing more than that. She has been able to maintain close to the weight she was when she donated a kidney, but says she wants to get rid of some body fat. I know from personal experience that it will make for a nice weight loss. Go LadyDi!!!!

This is just a test run for the latest thread that Risa started. Transplant Fitness and Accomplishments. I plan on making her aware that it is here in order to see what she thinks. If any of you have some observations, please chime in. As most all of you know, it has been my intention all along to get myself in as good a shape as I possibly can. Round is a shape, but I was tired of being that way. Most health care professionals urge folks to get themselves in better shape, and I took it to heart. I also wished to get my blood sugar under as good of a control as I could. I had problems with getting myself where I wanted to be and I am still having those problems. I still have 11 pounds that I would like to lose. I must say, however, that I have had less problems with losing weight since the first of the year. Before that, it was coming off, but extremely slowly. My weight was bouncing. One day it would be lower than the next and vice versa. I did not quite know what to expect. Most of my portion sizes were a guesstimate, at best and not a very good one. Since the first of January, I have taken a much more serious approach To my quest to lose more weight. My metabolism has increased quite a bit. I am going to be at somewhat of a quandry of what to do for the next month. I suspect that I am going to have to let up somewhat on the cardio parts of my workout or increase my intake of food. Most of this food will have to be carbohydrates, and I am curious of how my body is going to react. I go to Barnes on April 3rd. On that date, I am to see not only the doctor, but the nutritionist, too. I have many, many questions for her. First of all, if I have to ingest more carbohydrates, what effect will this have on my blood sugar? I had a set number of carbohydrates and protein that I was supposed to get for each day--basically 60g per meal and 15g for two snacks. (carbs) 80-90g for protein. I don't usually have to worry about fat, because I don't eat that much in the way of fats, other than poly and monounsaturated varieties. How does this change once I
get where I am going? I have tried to address the fact that I will have to eat more carbohydrates by buying slow digesting ones in hope that I can get what I need without blowing my blood sugar out of proportion. I will add to this once I have Risa look at this.

Hi Gregg

I love it! I feel this is a wonderful way for others to interact with one another.

You seem to know what works for you. Your picture speaks louder than words. Not everyone can have the motivation that you have....we can certainly learn from you and hopefully many others who will join us.

I walked and ran for 4.25 miles this morning. My cardio total for the week is 29 miles. My workout this evening is for 34 sets. I normally do 24 sets in 45 minutes during the week, so I am predicting about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes this evening. My total, including lifting during the week is 40 miles. I cut back on cardio to see what I can get away with once I cut back later--remember I wanted a target weight of 175 with body fat of 15%.

This is the drop off page today. I have still not finished my exercise for the day, although I walked and ran for 3.25 miles this morning and rode the bike for 10 miles. I still have a warm-up and weight workout this afternoon.

I guess switching my routines around by letting my trainer pick my exercises. I have gained a pound of muscle and lost a pound of fat in three weeks time.
Just do what the directions tell you. Take two tylenol and keep away from children
