If so, what do you use? Myself, I have been using either Odwalla Super Protein Bars, Roasted Edamame, in addition to other things which contain protein. Sometimes, I also include some Greek yogurt. As far as post workout, I have been using Wheybolic 60, albeit in a 40% helping as the full sering has 60 grams of protein. I am switching to Opitmum Nutrition's Gold Standard Whey when I am finished with my current 3# bottle of Wheybolic. I had been advised not to consume over 50 grams of any protein at any meal or snack by my nutritionist from Barnes.

Hey Cisco,

Saw the title of this post and felt I needed to share...I have been using a quality protein powder for over 18 years-I started drinking quality nutrition drinks while I was trying to stay strong while waiting for my lung transplant. It helped so much.

While I would never suggest they take the place of food, they are a great additon-especially when you are training hard or fighting something that is affecting your health-you need quality protein. It is essential.
Currently, i can proudly say i use MY OWN protein, Empower Pro www.wholebodywellbeing.com. Its pretty awesome and a dream come true!

I suggest to anyone making sure the ingredients, the protein, in their powder or products is quality-"you want to make sure what you do matters" how hard you work at staying alive and being healthy, and train-it should matter so make sure your products are quality.

I also would not suggest to consume more than 50 g of protein at a serving-actually I think that sounds high for anyone awaiting or received a transplant. Our organs can be overloaded as it is with meds, illness, etc. I take no more than 30 at a time (Im a girl, guys can do a bit more) but if the protein you have is quality, it will be digested and broken down effectively so you do not need to consume a ton at a serving.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents....Its been a pleasure to read about your life Cisco-keep up the journey!

Actually, I hardly ever get to the point of 50 grams of protein. Most of the time, I am in the 20's or 30's. But I do have occasion where I am eating something that does have a bit of protein. Take for example gumbo. I make chicken and shrimp gumbo. Yes it is higher in protein, but it is high quality protein. this is to say that it is not a high fat protein. It is served with whole grain rice and a piece of crusty bread.

Hey Cisco and Dottie:

You guys must be reading my mind these days. Should an average exerciser take a protein powder? I exercise 5-6 days a week. I usually exercise for an hour. I have many exercise DVD and I take Zumba at least once a week. Do you guys think that I need protein or would I get enough from my diet. I am not a big meat eater. I am trying to eat more quality protein, but I just don't digest a lot foods well.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

God Bless!

Karen, are you a good eater? You know that I am!! LOL!! Do you eat plenty of protein? What sources of protein do you get if you don't eat lean meat? I eat protein bars (one a day of soy protein). I also eat yogurt on occasion and for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I generally eat 3 ounces of some kind of lean meat, plus I drink 1 or 2 shakes a day (whey protein) I get 14 grams of protein from the bars, 14 and 20 from shakes plus whatever I get from the meat I eat. Most of the rest of what I eat does have small amounts of protein. I generally get about 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean mass I have on my body.

Hey Karen,

I agree with Cisco, what is it that you eat for protein in your diet? If you are not a big meat eater do you eat fish or chicken?

My other concern is you mentioning you do not always digest things well. i would say maybe keep a log of what you eat in a day -maybe for a couple days and look through it and see what types of protein you are eating, what else you could bring in.

It sounds like a quality protein drink could help supplement your diet and help you get the quality nutrition you need to live this new exciting life you are living and help keep you strong.

There is some info on protein on my whole body wellbeing website
under Empower Pro, the difference, why, etc.
I would be more than happy to send you a sample for you to try if you would like-Cisco, you also.
No pressure, I know everyone has their own things they like but if you are interested in finding out more, trying it, I would be more than happy to send you a sample of each flavor.

I am very proud of it and hope it helps many have another tool to fight, and live with.

Thanks Dottie and Cisco:

As you can tell, I am behind in posting. I am still assessing my protein needs.

I think I am healthy eater, but I do not consume a lot of food. I have mild gastroparesis and somedays it's hard to get the right amount of food in me. I do take a nutrition shake called Reliv Classic (from a company called Reliv International). I have been taking it for 14 yrs. now and it has been the best thing I have done nutritionally.

I am still looking into the protein issue. I am keeping a journal of my food intake to see how much protein I get in a day.

Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it!

God Bless!
