Hi, Anyone here experience ankle fatigue and to a lesser degree, thigh fatigue upon walking? This is not pain, it just feels like an utter fatigue. I find I have to stop and sit after walking a short distance. I know people are going to say this is simply a fitness issue, but it's clearly more than that. I am doing physical therapy, and I had a personal trainer for a while. The ankle fatigue seems to be getting worse lately. Could this be caused by any meds? I'm concerned especially because we are travelling to Italy at the end of this month, and will be walking a great deal. Another thing I'm having off an on (mostly after a day of being on my feet a lot) is an intense ache in my legs. This is very uncomfortable and cannot be relieved by anything but time. It goes away in a day or so. Thanks, Steve CF Lung Xplant 4/4/08 |

Steve, I experience the same thing "I find I have to stop and sit after walking a short distance." Have you discussed these issues with you GP or Transplant Coordinators? My lack of energy could be my age. I will be bumping that big "70" next year. Hope you get to the root of this walking problem. Good luck, my friend. Ol' Bob

Hi Steve What do you mean fatigue? Do you feel any tension? I think it could be your meds. Do you take any vitamins or minerals that might contain herbs? Read all ingredients on all the bottles. I have no clue as to what this could be ? Did you have a magnesium level checked? How is your posture? If you do not have proper alignment your back and put pressure on your feet and ankles. If your hips are mis-aligned you can probably have all sorts of sensations. Just a suggestion. I have a tiny arch and need supportive shoes. If not, oh boy! I hope you can figure this out.

Risa, I have a hard time describing the pain. It's not a stabbing pain. I had described it as burning before, which led the doc to think it might be neuropathy. But I think I have misled them using that description. I have an appt with a neurologist next week, but I really don't think it will help. It's just like an utter fatigue. I go so far, and I have to stop for a few minutes then I'm fine. I don't know if they've checked mag levels, but I do take 750mg twice a day. I have gained about 25 lbs since the transplant, and on a 5'2" frame, it's significant. The weight is mostly up front, so my posture is likely not great. This is very frustrating. We are going to europe in a couple of weeks and will be doing a lot of walking. Any suggestions are appreciated. Steve 44 cf dble lung xplat 4-4-08 |

hi Steve Pull in your stomach (not all the way) just to what feels comfortable. Start out with some abdominal exercises to strengthen your back? Make sure when you sit your sitting equally in position not leaning to one side or the other. Watch your carbs throughout the day. Do your feet feel more fatigued on stressful days? I would massage your feet several times daily to bring about blood flow. Enjoy your trip. I am sure your wife will understand when you need to take breaks. Nothing wrong with having a few mini meals to rest your feet. I would look into buying some great comfy shoes.

I started playing softball about 5 months after my kidney tx and I find that after running hard I get soreness in both my achilles tendons. My doctor says it is the effect of the prednisone. I am trying to find a solution to this because I'm sure there are some of us that are extremely physically active (or there wouldn't be a Transplant Games). Any thoughts? Val |

Hi Herobro, I am not sure what you mean by fatigue, but I have experienced mild to severe cramping in my legs and ankles because the lasix depletes my sodium level, Adding electrolytes to my water helps. You might want to have your sodium checked, Blessings., J'me

Hi Herobro, This is something new or you had this ever since transplant? By the way I'm sure you'll have amazing time in italy either way, the slower you explore it the better it is anyway

thanks for your thoughts. This is something new and my transplant doctor says it is a result of the prednisone I take.. I'm just not convinced that there isn't anything I could do to correct the situation. I'm fine when I play but afterwards my achilles are both very sore and I have trouble walking comfortably, much less play again, like say in a tournament. Val |

Hi Everyone, I wanted to quickly reply to these posts-I think it is SO GREAT everyone is sharing life experiences and asking questions for their is "strength in numbers" and "Knowledge is power!" I had experienced both muscles soreness fatigue in muscles and also some burning/pain in my L calf several years after my lung transplant and kidney transplant. An interesting note was that (for me) after doing everything I could as an athlete and getting all kinds of treatments including massage, alt therapies, all medical tests, we found out the pain in the calf was due to a blocked femoral (upper leg) artery. It is just a suggestion but maybe have your docs check the pulses in your legs/ankles and make sure there are no blockages. Mine was caused by trauma years back and because my body was strong, went unnoticed except for the calf issue. Also, yes the prednisone can attack our muscles at the cellular level and my suggestion of the best way to combat that is to keep yourself healthy and strong as possibly with exercise and healthy eating and a GREAT mindset. It is certainly a "balance" of living. There are medications that are needed yet anything we can do ourselves to combat the side effects is power. As long as we know there are no injuries i would say to move as much as you can! Hope this helps a little and wish everyone the best life has to offer-congratulations on empowering yourself through this great site! Love Dottie |

Hello, This has just started happening to me also. I power walk or do cardio at the gym for 10 minutes or more and I start getting numbness and pain that starts in my left calf and can travel up to my thigh. It subsides after a few minutes of rest, but returns when i resume waling etc. Now, it sometimes comes when I am sitting at my desk and working. What do you suggest?

Do you happen to be taking anything for lipid lowering? liptor, etc. Although my cholesterol levels are good my LDL has to be less than 100! no discussion!period! per my clinic and these agents have a reputation for causing muscle pain and cramping regardless of dose My calfs will bother me on ocassion

since I have been diagnosed with the CKD i seem to cramp alot in my legs also. I think my problem is the Lasix because it is dropping my potassium. Overall I just fatigue a lot faster then I used to. I used to be able to work out with weights for 30 minutes and then do do 30 -45 mins on the bike or treadmill without a problem. Now it is harder for me to workout with weights and i can go about 45 minutes on the bike and treadmill. |

i do experience a lot of fatigue in my ankles and thighs when I am walking. I to have to stop and reset after not walking very far. I have been working on strengthening my legs and my ankle. ( i have had a couple of ankle surgeries in the last few years) what kind of physical therapy do you do?
