1-3-2010

It's been a very busy day weekend here.

Yesterday was our last Christmas event of the season ...... "Christmas" (albeit over a week late) at Mom's. Mom was with us when we went to our son's, so this was the full family Christmas, there were 28 people there. A great evening, for sure.

Now that the holiday period is over, which I define as Thanksgiving to New Years, I will say that I gained and lost the same amount of weight. In other words, I weigh exactly the same now, as I did on Thanksgiving, 174.8. And, that makes me a happy camper.

This morning I needed to get some holiday pictures organized and sent to family members. This is a chore when I had 800+ raw pictures to go through ...... lots of bad one were deleted and the total ended up being around 500. Did I ever say that I love my camera?

Today, we started to get busy here. We took most of the furniture out of the bedroom, removed the carpet, padding and tack-less strips and patched a ceiling crack a few nail holes. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll paint the ceiling. (Felt good to be a bit more productive)

It's cold here. Not as cold as some places, but this morning we had a temperature of +5F when I got up, with a wind-chill of minus 14F. We also have about 6" of snow on the ground.

2010 is off and running .......

Below .... My little Bella was going to put "cream" on my mustache. (My son caught the moment)

I must say you both look like kids playing. You're blessed to have such a wonderful family to celebrate the holidays.

One question, do you know why men seem to not gain weight as quickly as women? Men lose weight faster too that stinks.

You look great and if I have my mind clear, aren't you the wonderful person that take the time to post all birthdays, anniversaries and special events. What would we do without you?

1/6/2009

Thank you all for the kind comments.

Holly you look great and if you can make it to the Tx dinner this month it will be on your anniversary. How cool is that!!!

Meagan, Cindy, Karen, Rise' and KQL ~ She is adorable in person as well, not to mention how very smart she is for her age.

Robin, there are some men that gain LOTS of weight. That was my fear post transplant ~ that I wouldn't be able to stop gaining weight ~ but, through a lot of hard work, really watching my diet and plenty of exercise I have held steady. I have to work at it. And, for the record, I met a heart recipient a couple years ago that weighed well over 400 pounds, so men do gain weight.

This week has been consumed on a couple of different fronts. The first being the bedroom painting project that continues to progress at a nice easy pace. The second time eater this week has been my follow up on numerous administrative issues. 3 health insurance company issues, 2 hospital erroneous billings and one Dr's office error in billing. Then there was the matter of a MAJOR issue with my pension check and the amount of health insurance deducted. It's a good thing I keep track of everything, or they'd be picking my pocket.

Today was volunteer day, and it was a difficult day for me. Any time I am near where a "code blue" is called I get more than a little freaked out. One was called today while I was on the nursing unit and it happened to be a friend of mine. A lot of difficult work was performed by the team and they pulled the person through, and then the person was wisked to off ICU immediately. Made for a rough day for me and all of the patients as well. They are extended family, for sure. (Extra prayers tonight, as well as extra thanks as well)

Note to Karen ~ do NOT worry! Not our mutual friend.

When I was a kid, I delivered newspapers for a number of years. It was a rewarding job and helped me pay my own way as a kid. This was a long time ago ....... For Christmas, my Mom gave me an old newspaper delivery truck from the newspaper that I used to deliver ,,,,,,,, very cool. (Note to truck experts, I delivered papers in the 60's ......... NOT the 20's as is the truck.) LOL

1/9/2009 ~

The painting in the bedroom was completed yesterday and today we will move on to cleaning the hardwood floor and start moving the furniture back. I'm thinking we won't finish until tomorrow, which is fine with me. One has to pace themselves.

All of the other issues remain "status quo". (I will attack them again next week)

I'm not sure in others do this, but I'm back in a cycle of very strange and very colorful dreams. I can go months without wild and crazy dreams, then I'll go through a stretch with some vivid ones. I'll do my best to describe last night's .......... All white back ground, with animated pencil drawn stick figures, running, talking and laughing. Then I woke up, it was like, "What the heck was that?" I did drift off to sleep again.

Snow wars ~ we've had at least some snow falling here for like 14 days in a row. (I might be off a day or so). Not a tremendous amount at any one time, but anywhere from 1 to 3". I got the shovel out of the garage and met with FIRM resistance from my wife about using it. So the shovel leaned against the house until the next day, and when we walked out to the garage, she got snow inside her shoes & she immediately said, WE will shovel when WE get back. Upon returning home she helps me push the shovel through the snow. The next day, snow removal had once again become my job. LOL

Life is good!!

1/11/2010 (got the year correct this time, LOL)

It was a very busy, but very good weekend. We moved back into the bedroom last night, marking the end on another project.. It simply feels good to work on some things around the house. It feels productive. And with the weather we've had, it sure beats spending a lot of time outside.

Speaking of weather, I heard on the news last night that we haven't been about freezing for a month now, plus it snowed 15 days in a row. Global warming? I think NOT, LOL.

Yesterday we went to the movies and saw "Law Abiding Citizen", a shoot'em up, blow'em up kind of movie. Was OK, and it kept us out of the cold for a couple of hours.

Today I have added a new issue to a growing stack of insurance problems and erroneous medical billings that I have been working on. I recently placed an order for my generic Cellcept and I was sent generic Cellcept made by a different manufacture than what I am currently taking. Just to make sure, I wrote up all the details last night and faxed to my Tx Coordinators, to make sure how I am to handle this change, as minor as it may be.

Hope you have a GREAT day!!!!

DAP:

Will you come and paint our bedroom!!! I just got a new quilt, shams, and curtains for our bedroom. The bathroom got a makeover too, but it got painted. Jerry just looks at me like I am crazy when I asked him to paint the bedroom. I guess I don't blame him. We have had quite a crazy December?!?! LOL!

I know what you mean about the snow. I think it has snowed everyday since I have been home from Cleveland. I thought Cleveland was supposed to get snow like this?!?! I guess it's good that I am cooped up so that I can't go out and run around while I am trying to heal.

Sorry to hear about your insurance mess. I get so frustrated with that stuff. You can spend hours on the phone and get nothing accomplished. YUCK!!

As always, I love reading your blog!!

God Bless!

1/14/2010 ~

Life is good, but have been busy as always.

Today I wanted to share a little. My daughter-in-law and her family came from Romania over 20 years ago. Plus, through my work career, I met a number of other Romanians in person, a few that became close friends. My wife and I even "adopted" a couple of girls while they went to college here in the US. (I knew their parents from work).

With that being said, one of them sent me some pictures the other day and I want to share a few here. (Some I can't share as they are a bit to "risque")

I need a caption for this one ....... it fascinates me.

Karen & Rise', thanks for the nice comments. Karen, my wife says I'm very expensive ....... just be forewarned if you want that bedroom painted. LOL

We are currently in the midst of the big, January thaw. We've got a nice and easy snow & ice melt going on, which allowed me to go and wash both cars today, and we also took 2 large comforters to the laundramat to wash them in the large capacity machines. Was nice to get out and not have to dodge snow flakes and bitter weather.

Here's another picture from Romania ........ captions for either?

Holly, thanks for the nice comments and picture captions. Those were good, and yes that is a McDonald's. Pic's of the bedroom after my wife decides what pictures and where to hang them. Actually, with my current med levels that container isn't too bad to use. I got tired of using the old "specimen bottles" @ 8am, Noon, 5pm, 8pm and 10pm. LOL

*************************************

The past few days have fairly quiet around here. Yesterday, I spent some time and removed an old laundry sink in the basement and have the new one about 85% installed. I still need to finish a few things, which I will do tomorrow. One can only spend so much time in a dark basement in the winter, without starting to feel like a mole.

Today, since the snow melt in Ohio continues, we are going to take a drive and get out of town. No idea where we will head, but a day trip is order.

Life is good.

Years ago, we had a VW Beetle and I swore I could haul about anything in it. This guy beat me by a long shot, LOL

DAP:

The Romania pictures are hilarious! I have no creativity when it comes to funny captions, so I can't help you there.

I am enjoying the snow melt too. I was officially able to drive last Thursday, so I took advantage of the "heat wave" to go get my hair cut and pick Sammy up from his afterschool program. He was thrilled to see Momma!! His excitement was music to my ears.

I think I am going to have to wait for my bedroom to be painted. Jerry has found new projects in the basement that don't include painting. I think he deserves to have a little time to himself just to tinker around in his basement!!

I am glad that you are getting out and about now that snow is melting. It feels good doesn't it!!

God Bless!

1/20/2010 ~

Today is my Mom's 86th birthday!! Yeah Mom!!

It's been a decent week here this far. Monday I finished the laundry sink project in the basement. Yesterday, we started on yet another project .... the guest room. It will be a slow, take my time kind of thing.

Today was volunteer day, and it was a pretty good day. I took a walk to see if I could locate "our" Karen, who was going to be there for testing today. I walked over to an area, the main transplant office area, where I rarely go, because it's quite a distant from the heart center and all of my doc's. I didn't see Karen, but when I do, I'll try to get her picture with her standing by this sign. ........

PS ~ They SMASHED this "world record" in 2009, and Karen was part of the total. YES!!!!!!

1/22/2010 ~

All is well here. Through my other blog ( http://My2ndHeartBeat.Wordpress.com ) I have been communicating with a very nice donor family in Canada. I think it's been good for both of us as recipients/donors.

Another project has also been started. We were going to remove the carpet in the guest room, but that has now changed into a total re-painting.

Life is never boring around here.

1/24/2010 ~

It's been a good weekend here. We have been working on the guest room a bit each day and the project is moving along nicely.

Earlier today I was talking to my son and he asked a simple question, "What's with you guys ripping out all of the carpet in the upstairs?" (We have a 2 story home, with 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs on the second floor)

A simple and honest question that kind of came out of no where in particular. One of those questions that your mind wasn't expecting and your brain has to actually process each word in order until you fully understand it. I stammered a bit and I tried to remember exactly why we were, in fact, ripping out the carpeting one room at a time. The guest room was the last room. As I processed the question, my mind went backwards in time. After about 45 seconds I remembered EXACTLY why we had been on this carpet removal path.

On the day that changed my life forever, the day of my heart attack that led me on a fast and furious journey to transplant the following happened. When my heart attack hit, I was sitting in my den (one of the 3 bedrooms) at my desk downloading digital pictures from my camera onto my PC. I felt nothing, I simply crashed face first into the desk, severely lacerating my face immediately above my right eye. I bounced off of the desk and then face first onto the carpeted floor. Bleeding profusely, all over the carpet.

We never thought about that carpet until I came home some time later after my transplant. My wife scrubbed it numerous times, to no avail. As I recuperated I saw the need to have my den rearranged, just to make life easier on me. It took lots of discussion, but eventually we agreed to redecorate my den, including removing the carpet. Of course, once one room didn't have carpet, it was decided that we would do the same to the other rooms. I delayed this for 2+ years and it was finally time to pay the piper.

Anyway, to answer my son, I said the following ..... he understood COMPLETELY!!

Heart attack!
Laceration!
Stain!
Transplant!
Carpet!
Mom!

He replied, "Enough said"

Here's the room, 4 months after transplant!

1/25/2010 ~

This is shaping up to be a very busy week. Often, we have very little on the calendar, but every so often we'll get hit with a variety of things all at once. But, that makes life interesting and we will go with the flow.

Tomorrow is my day as a patient. I have labs, and echocardiogram, heart biopsy and visits with my transplant coordinator & transplant doc. My wife has her own "things" that she needs to deal with.

Wednesday is volunteer day for me, and my wife has another full day of things that are scheduled.

Thursday evening is my transplant dinner, but I have a feeling that the day will be spent in the guest room, finishing that little project.

Let's hope for very little, to NO snow since I'll be driving to Cleveland 3 days in a row.

Also, since I will be a "patient" tomorrow and will see my Tx coordinator, I have something I NEED to take with me. As I approach my 1,000th EXTRA day of living (2/4/2010), I have written another thank you letter and card for my donor family. It was something I felt a strong need to do. May God Bless them daily!!!

Life is Good!!!!!

Here's a nice DonateLife display that's right outside the main Transplant Center office complex at Cleveland Clinic.

1/28/2010 ~

Thanks Rise' & Meagan for the nice comments.

As I explained in my previous post, it was going to be a crazy week and I've been right.

Tuesday was testing day and all went well. I don't have my biopsy results back at this point, but all labs were great. My "Ejection Fraction" was at 59% and both my Tx Coordinator and Dr were VERY pleased with everything. They told me, "Keep doing what you're doing, because it's working"

Yesterday was volunteer day, and a busy one. There were 2 transplants in the past few days, so that's always exciting for me, and it gives the patients an up lift as well.

Today, we will go to my transplant dinner .......

Life is GOOD!!!

One more Romania pic ........... How about a caption for this one?

1/29/2010

It has been a crazy week, but things have finally calmed a bit and all is well on a VERY cold Friday evening.

I did finally get my biopsy results from my tests on Tuesday and I was a 0-R. My EF was 59% and everything else was good, the only exception was my kidney function was "marginal", meaning drink, drink, drink and drink some more. (creatinine was 1.56)

Last night was our transplant dinner and while the food was not very satisfactory, the company was fabulous. I saw many old and newer friends. I'm simply in awe each time I see that many heart recipients in the same room, at the same time. Our stories are all different, but we are all survivors. We are all miracles. It was amazing to note that 6 heart transplants have been performed in 2010.

Today, I got busy once again in the guest room that we started painting last week. I will finish everything tomorrow, and not a moment too soon. When one room is torn up, it seems the entire house is in chaos.

I son sent me this picture of Isabella a few hours ago ........ glad to see the DonateLife decals are surviving the abuse of a pouting two year old, that's having a bad hair day.

Hi DAP,

Great ejection fraction and biopsy results.

I love the picture of Isabella. When I get a minute I am going to post one of my brother's 21 month old granddaughter having a pouting bout in the bath tub with arms crossed and shooting a not-so-nice look at her parents - she looks very cute. Isn't it funny how grandparents and great-aunts laugh at these things?

1/31/2010 ~

The big news of the day is that I finally have my den back. Not just a small area in the den, but the entire den. This was because the guest bedroom has been completed and today we put back the furniture and other sundry items, where they belong. We still need to go pick up (tomorrow) the new daybed we bought to complete the guest room, but for now, I have my den back.

This is for everyone that reads this blog ..... and since it's on TransplantBuddies ...... this is for ALL of you, my friends!!

DAP:

Sorry I have been away so long. I had to catch up on your blog. I agree with Risa - it's like watching a TV series. I love your updates and pictures. Just what was that pregnant woman doing in her swim suit in the snow pouring water on herself. Is she nuts?!?!?

Isabella is adorable. Oh - do I remember those 2 yr. old tantrums. Gee - I still remember those 5 yr. old tantrums. Do they ever end?!?!? :-)

I am sorry I missed seeing you at the Clinic. I was probably getting my bronch when you were looking for me. They got me in a little earlier than I was scheduled. Isn't that sign awesome! Actually the number of lung transplants is a lot higher. I think in 2009 they did something like 170+. Simply amazing!! I was so excited to be a part of a record breaking year!!

One of these days I will see you in Cleveland. I am doing a clinical trial for inhaled cyclosporine. If I get in the medicine group, I will be there for 5 days to learn how to use the meds. I will make sure that I get to see you if you are volunteering that week. :-)

Thanks for such a great blog!!

God Bless!

2/3/2010 ~

Karen and Rise' thank you for the nice comments, but my life is nothing at all like a TV series ........ I stay busy, and it's a good life, but it probably wouldn't do well in the ratings department.

It has been a couple of busy days here. Monday was totally consumed with picking up the new day bed. We probably looked like the Clampetts driving down the road with the huge box tied to the car roof, with about 200' of rope. The drive from the warehouse was about 23 miles ~ at a top speed of 36 MPH. Then we took it upstairs and assembled it.

Yesterday was a highly productive day. Trips to the drug store, Walmart, the gym, barber shop, twice to the car wash, my Mom's house, oil change place and I also replaced a head light in my car and installed a new light in the laundry area in the basement.

Today was volunteer day ...... and a good day despite some snow in the air.

Tomorrow we will get ready to go see the "little people" (grand kids) over the weekend. Most likely I will see the dotted line of the turnpike during the Super Bowl on Sunday as we head back home.

Life is good.

Here's a pic of one of my friend's vehicles ...... damaged when they hit their second deer in three months. (I told him hunting with a car is against the law)

DAP,

What a beautiful snowy scene. It seems the U.S. has received all our Canadian snow this year. We have only had one major snowfall this year. I hope I'm not speaking too soon. Nick has only had to use the snowblower once.

Have fun with the grand-kids. Waiting to see more picture. Haved a safe drive back.

Don:

Looks like the Columbus area. Here in Delaware we got 12-14 inches. It was beautiful this morning. The trees were covered with snow. It looked like a postcard. Jerry did take a picture, but he hasn't downloaded it yet. I will post it once he sends it to my computer.

Also. a big congratulations on your 1000 days with your new heart! That is really cool!

Have a safe trip. Have fun with the little people!!

2/8/2010 ~

What a wild weekend and return to home we've had. Seeing the grand-kids was the BIG story, but also witnessing a major city brought to it's knees by old man winter was pretty incredible as well.

Friday ~ we knew there was a storm headed towards the East coast, so we left plenty early in an effort to miss at least the majority of the storm. We did well and arrived about 5 hours ahead of the first snow flakes. The plan was for us to keep both grand-kids in our hotel room over the weekend, so Mommy & daddy could get some major work related projects completed. So, we picked the kids up, took them to dinner and then to the hotel. Later in the evening we were watching the snow blanketing the city below us.

Sat, we woke up to see the city of Philadelphia at a dead stop. To a couple of mid-westerners, the streets didn't look "that bad", but the locals were pretty much all in hiding. My son found a restaurant that was open for brunch and we took the kids there, and then they played in the park for a few minutes before going back to the hotel. The kids wanted to go "camping" so that's what we did ..... all afternoon and into the evening.

We had an awesome time.

On Sunday, we all had brunch again. I had checked the turnpike conditions on the internet earlier and it was wide open and up to speed. I have to admit that Pennsylvania did an awesome job of cleaning over 346 miles of highway that had up to 30" of snow blanketing it.

When we got back home last night, we had a minor problem ....... about 20" of snow ....... no where to park the car. We made a quick decision for me to "try" and fire up the snow-blower and move some of the snow. The snow-blower had not been used in over 3 years, since before my transplant at some point. I got it started (lots of swearing involved, LOL) and I did clean 1/2 the driveway so I could get the car out of the middle of the street. I finished the snow removal today.

This was an interesting turn of events as my wife and I have had this ongoing snow-blower "issue" (I've written about it in older blog posts). Anyway, it appears the "issue" has been resolved, at least temporarily.

More snow, 6" to 10" is on the way ..........

Here's a few pics from the weekend ..........

PS, On a good note, a very dear transplant friend of mine had open heart surgery today and is doing well at this point. Our prayers continue!! (And, for Ol'Bob's surgery on Weds)

DAP:

Great pictures!! You look like you haven't a care in the world!! That is so wonderful that you go to see your grandkids often. You are making memories that will stay with them the rest of their lives! I really love the fact that you played camping all day!! LOL!

We had tons of snow too! It's too bad that one of your neighbors didn't come and dig you out. We have several neighbors with snowblowers and they will help us out most of the time. Jerry has my grandfathers old snowblower that he tried to fix up. It works about 1/3 of the time. I think our neighbors feel sorry for him and come help him out!!

I am really tired of the snow. I think it will take until May to all melt. I am so ready to get out in the warm weather and enjoy these new lungs!

God Bless!

2/11/2010

It's like the entire past week's weather (snow) has consumed me. The snow has finally ended by the clean up continues. It takes me a while and I space out the time in between so I don't totally exhaust myself.

The snow kept me from going to volunteer yesterday, but I did make the trip today and it was a good day. Met some new friends, got some good/positive news about old friends and there was at least one transplant this week (still in ICU) so it was a good trip.

Not sure what's on the agenda tomorrow, but I do know we will be one day closer to spring.

No snow pic's tonight .... just my little people!

2/14/2010 ~

Happy Valentine's Day to all!!

It's been a fairly relaxing weekend here. Yesterday we went to the movies and saw "It's Complicated" (Meryl Streep/Alec Baldwin) which was very funny and walked a LOT. I also ran the snow-blower for a while as the city snow plows buried the front sidewalk again. (logged a 10 mile day all together). Today was almost a carbon copy. We went to the movies and saw "Everyone's Fine" (Robert De Niro) which is a very touching movie about family, illness and truthfulness. Then I finished snow blowing.

Tomorrow the fun begins as I start working on my taxes. And, of course, we are due for another 3"-5" of snow. It seems to never end.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!!

2/17/2010 ~

A long day, but all turned out OK.

This morning, I was awake early to take my anti-rejection meds, and my wife was still sleeping .... and then phone rang unusually early. It was my Mom's "Lifeline" calling ........ she had fallen and pushed the button that she wears, which activated the system. Within minutes, the rescue crew was at her condo, and they whisked her off to the hospital.

Then, "Lifeline" called my sister, brother, niece and myself ....... to advise us as to what was happening. We scrambled and went to the hospital, which is about 10 blocks from my house. She was fine, had sprained her knee. After she was released, we took her for a quick lunch and then back home. It's good to know the system "works".

The funny thing was ...... this is the ER where I was taken after my heart attack, that ultimately led to my transplant, and I do NOT remember it AT ALL!!

Other than that, it was another day of snow. No complaining today, as I'm just going to deal with it, and eventually (June?) it may go away. But, I will say that I'm running out of room to put it.

Hi DAP,

I'm glad your mom had the Lifeline. It's really good to have this system for people who live alone. I hope her knee heals quickly.

You certainly have had a lot of snow. Nick has only had to use the snowblower once this year. We have had a pretty mild winter as far as snow is concerned, but it has been freezing. We are waiting though. We will probably get our blizzards any day now.

Great pictures - you look like you are about to perform surgery and the kids are very cute.

I love reading your posts, they are so full family love. They just make me feel warm and fuzzy. (If you're crying you're a sap LOL The grandkids are so adorable. You just want to squeeze their cheeks! If only they could stay tat young. But then I look at my Sam and I just star sometimes and think what a wonderful adult she has become, I am just so proud of her. From what I hear from all my sisters, it's 10 times more wonderful with your grandchildren. You enjoy them to the max I know you do but just continue because those little faces are really what life is all about

2/19/2010 ~

Thanks Meagan, Andrea and Holly for the nice comments.

It's been a very busy week here, yet it seems I have accomplished very little. Snow removal finally ended yesterday, and it has been so repetitive, that I think that's where a lot of my time has gone.

Mom is doing fine since her fall, but she requires constant checking. Or, in my mind I feel I MUST check on her a lot, LOL.

Another big chunk of time has gone to TurboTax ........ and that will continue over the next few days, I'm sure. I just can't work on taxes non-stop, as it drives me crazy.

Despite the weather, I did go volunteer on Wednesday. A day of emotional ups and downs. One transplant, another out of ICU after a long stint there were wonderful things. Then there was news of a good friend that lost the ultimate battle, reminded me, once again, that life is too short. The world lost another truly remarkable person!

This morning, the sun is shining, and I will life, enjoy the day, and be VERY thankful for every heartbeat I have.

Three generations at Christmas time ~

2/21/2010 ~

It's been a very nice weekend. We have had zero snow for a number of days, and we've actually had a bit of a nice melt going on yesterday and today. Apparently there's some freezing "stuff" coming in tonight, but is supposed to be gone my morning.

Yesterday, I had to be re-accreditated so I can continue to volunteer. Most of it was fairly mundane, but they had an awesome ICU nurse from my transplant center there to speak. Incredible stories, I could have stayed and listened to her for hours.

Today, we went to the movies and saw "Brothers" with Tobey Maguire. An intense film about a war vet with extreme PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Very intense! Not that all of us go through war, but we do go through periods of high stress a number of times. I'm sure I even experienced some level of PTSD after my transplant. I'm sure my wife experienced even more. This is a topic that I feel the need to investigate a bit deeper. Very good movie, though!

This evening we were at my sister's helping her for a little while with her 4 month twin grand-kids. We fed them, played with them ........ there's nothing quite like a baby just to make everything feel right with the world, even if only for a few minutes.

Here's Ayla & Austin (respectively)

Cute babies! I can't wait for my friends twins to be born.

I am confused about our forcast so whatever is here in the morning is what we get. One says rain, the other snow, and then some say ice...so who knows what we will end up with. It is still 35...nice and balmy here also.

Glad your mom is ok. My grandma had Life Alert and they are good.

DAP,

You are so lucky! The twins are so cute. I am dying to hold a baby now that Alyssa is getting to be a big girl.

I am going to be a great-grand aunt, or great-great-aunt, grand-great aunt, or whatever they call us. I found out my great-niece (grand niece?) is expecting a baby boy in July. I am feeling a little old now, but I must explain my brother is way older than me .... lol. If my mom were still alive she would be a great-great-grandmother .... I think?

DAP:

I am so glad that your mom is doing well and it was nothing too serious. My grandmother (95) just went into assisted living in January. My Dad is out there 2-3 times a week. I think he feels he MUST check on her too. It's nice to know that you and my Dad care so much about your mothers!!

The snow pictures looked like our house! It was amazing and yes overwhelming. I am so glad that the last couple of days have been warm and the snow is melting.

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes!!! I am still working on mine too. They are so boring. I just need to get them done.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost a friend. That has to be hard on you. It does make you truly appreciate life and your health.

The babies are adorable. The second picture reminds me of Sammy at that age. I miss having babies around too - sometimes!!! I have to say that it is much easier having an older child, but then they start to get this attitude thing going on. I don't know what is worse?!?! I have to say though that I have enjoyed Sammy at each stage so far.

I hope you have a great week!

God Bless!

2/24/2010 ~

Heather, Meagan and Karen, thanks for the nice comments.

The past few days have been the typical days of some gym time, working on some simple projects around the house and watching some of the massive piles of snow slowly melt. I also took some time to work on "TransplantBuddies Tribune" and sent/posted. My idea for this was a newsletter for our members and maybe some transplant folks we know, that aren't members of TxBuddies. However, sending to transplant centers is an awesome idea to potentially get many members, lots of input from others. Sharing is one thing that we do VERY well.

Today was volunteer day and a first for me. When I am visiting with patients, I leave my cell phone on vibrate, as a common courtesy to the patients. I was finishing up with one patient and my phone was buzzing away. I left the room about 2 minutes later and heard my name being called on the pager system. Now, that was a total shock. As I was headed to the area I was paged to, I check my cell and sure enough the earlier phone call was from one of my transplant coordinators. I scurried to where I was requested and was told that my Dr wanted me to speak with a patient that had JUST been informed that they needed a new heart. This person was pretty much in shock when I entered the room and was introduced. We talked for quite a while ..... my history, lots of questions, followed by honest answers. I pray for the patient and maybe they see that there is life after transplant. I hope I gave a positive dose of hope.

Hi Don,

I think what you do with your volunteering is wonderful. I am sure you did indeed give that patient a dose of hope. I wish you were in my hospital the day they told me I had 3 to 6 months to live and needed a new heart. That was bad enough, but then we had to go through all of it again when they found something wrong with the liver. Being such a rare surgery my husband and I were scared witless.

You're an angel for helping all these patients. Bless you. And good job with the newsletter.

DAP:

Talk about being at the right place at the right time. You have helped that patient more than you know.

Like Meagan, I wish there was someone like you that could have talked to me when we were told that I needed a lung transplant evaluation. We were so shocked that neither one of us really heard or understood what the Doctor at Mayo Clinic was telling us. I didn't even accept it until I read it in black and white when a packet came from Mayo 2 months later with a summary of all the results from the tests and such that we did there. I had totally blocked it out of my mind. It took me 7 months after the Mayo Doc recommended an evaluation for me to actually research it. It took me 9 months to actually get to the evaluation. If someone like you had talked to me right after that I might not have wasted 9 months accepting that I needed a transplant.

Your work as a volunteer is so valuable. I know that you are impacting people's lives every time you visit them. You are hope to many people including all of us here at Transplant Buddies!! Thank you for all you do!

God Bless!

2/28/2010 ~

Thanks Meagan and Karen for your nice comments. As things would turn out, I get to see another patient this week that has been recently listed for a transplant, but has never met a recipient. I'll be the first. (I'll NEVER forget the first recipient I met, he'll always be my mentor.)

I've been busy the past couple of days on a post on my other blog. How I define my life by music. Who am I? It's almost a biography in music.

I can remember there have been a number of threads on TransplantBuddies that dealt with music. A memorable one was started by Jeff last year ~ http://www.transplantbuddies.org/tbx/messages/104348/53501.html?1246291010

However, 10 songs from a deserted island CD is too limiting. Plus, my tastes in music run from Willie Nelson to the Phantom of the Opera.

In my mind I've been writing this post for a long time. This is me, or this is how I see myself .... and what I enjoy. No matter how I got here today, I do know I LOVE LIFE and EVERY heartbeat ~ http://my2ndheartbeat.wordpress.com/2010/02/28/my-life-defined-by-music/

MY LIFE DEFINED BY MUSIC

Quote ~ Music always helps, no matter what you’re going through. So, if you flunk a big test, or you had a really bad breakup, or you just miss someone so bad, it hurts, then listen to my playlist. A hundred songs to save your life. And it should help. – Peyton Sawyer, “One Tree Hill”

As I have looked back over my life. Looked at the up and downs and the paths I’ve taken, I’ve often thought that there is probably a song or two that might apply to some of the major chapters or segments. Most lives could probably be looked at, as a poorly written “tragedy”. Yes, I have some very low “lows”, but I also have been very BLESSED in my life. I enjoy life, I love my family ….. and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I have most of these on my MP3 player, that I use at the gym and those times at home when I seek to tune out the world.

Just like laughter, music is a BIG part of my life.

Feel free to analyze me, if you wish. Or simply ask about a certain selection as there might be a story …. Or I simply liked that particular song. Comments are ALWAYS welcome!

3/7/2010 ~

We've had some fabulous weather here recently and I've been trying to take full advantage of this change, even though we still have 4" - 6" of snow on the ground.

Been working on finishing a few projects around the house and trying to position myself to paint the bathroom. I want to get as many inside things done, because Spring will eventually arrive. Then it will be time to get outside.

Coincidences ~ Today I ran into an old friend of mine from work. I knew that he had heart surgery at my Tx Center a while back. He was telling me that he was at the hospital recently and heard me being paged (see my 2-24-2010 post above). Small world in that he was there when that very rare event happened. It's a small world. There are never any secrets.

I'm starting to get a bad case of spring fever ........ I need to put the top down on the car, tomato plants, flowers, baseball, and farmer's markets.

3/11/2010 ~

The weather has been fabulous here the past few days. Today, we were able to take a LONG walk (3+ miles) outside and enjoy the sunshine. Of course there were a lot of piles of mud and residual snow "crud" on the sidewalks and streets, but the weather was perfect. (People in the north know about snow crud, if you need a picture let me know and I'll take one)

Volunteering went well yesterday and I also stopped while I was there and had a required TB test so I can continue to volunteer. The amount of people waiting "in-house" has dropped slightly, but there are more patients on devices (VAD & Big Blue) right now than I've seen in quite some time. But, every one seemed to be in pretty good spirits.

Tomorrow, I have to go back to the Clinic and have the TB "read". We are going to make a day trip out of this as I'm going to take my wife to one of Michael Symon's newest restaurants. If you are a Food Network junkie, you might remember that he was the winner of the "Iron Chef" competition last year. And, yes, I'll probably venture off my diet a bit tomorrow. LOL

It probably won't be as bad as the picture below, but who knows ......

This is (was) a pork porterhouse from a place called, Blue Canyon Grill.

3/14/2010 ~

We had a good day on Friday, but didn't get to have lunch at Michael Symon's new restaurant. Increased awareness, equals increased customers and neither my wife and I enjoy 2 hour waits. Regardless, the weather was beautiful and we had a nice day. And, the TB test was perfect.

Yesterday, I started some of prep work so we can start painting the bathroom .... hopefully, this week. Since we haven't bought the paint, I'm not working too hard on it at this point. As soon as my wife figures out her "color palette" we'll get more serious.

Life doesn't always need to be work.

Today, we just might go to the movies and relax. Every once in a while I feel like the wall I have to "climb" is too high, and today I'm having one of those kind of days. Better to sit back and think of an easier way to get to the top.

What's the easiest way to the top?

3/18/2010 ~

It's been a nice, yet busy week here thus far. Working a bit every day in the bathroom, getting it ready to paint. Took Mom to lunch one day, ran errands, time at the gym and volunteering at the Clinic. It's been good.

And, the weather is wonderful ..... the early spring flowers are popping out of the ground and starting to bloom.

As usual, the winter has been rough on both of our cars. My wife's car went in for service today and everything was checked, fluids & filters changed and a couple of things repaired and all is good now. Mine goes tomorrow, or Monday ..... depending on how motivated we are tomorrow morning.

I love this picture we got of the grand kids yesterday. It will be on the wall of my den before midnight. It took us a while to figure out what they were wearing ..... they were at the pediatrician for their annual check ups. (all was good)

Life is good!!!!

DAP,

This is by far my favorite picture of the two little cuties. They are so beautiful! I think this is going to be wonderful on the wall in your den.

I am looking around the walls of our freshly painted den wondering what I should hang there and now I know.

Good luck with painting the bathroom. We are not talking about painting our kitchen yet. Come to think of it the bathrooms could use a change of colour ... oh no, I better stop talking.

Life IS good!! The picture of your "little people" is precious! Did you get it on the wall today? They are so cute!

I love this weather! Sammy and I were outside yesterday taking a walk all around our house. He was so excited to show me all of his special places and secret passage ways. It's been since he was almost 2 yrs old that I have been out walking around our yard. He even planted a seed, hoping that it would grow into a tree - we'll see about that. It was just fun to be out and about with him! LIFE IS GOOD!!!

3/21/2010 ~

Meagan and Karen, thanks for the nice comments. I did indeed get that picture printed and hung on the wall the other evening.

Yeah, spring arrived right on time yesterday and it's been a pretty decent weekend here. It was even better than the "weather guessers" had predicted. 70 both days, and that brought out a daffodil. (see below)

I've been keeping busy, working a little each day in the bathroom. Yesterday, my wife needed to do some shopping so I was her designated driver and debit card supervisor. We had a good afternoon and took a drive through the country on the way home. It was a gorgeous day. And, yes, she did buy a couple of things.

Today, the "weather guessers" were calling for a chance of rain (erroneously) so we decided to go to an early movie. Today we saw, "Up In The Air" with George Clooney. He was up for an "Oscar" and it was a very GOOD movie. As a side note, last weekend we went and saw "Blind Side" with Sandra Bullock. She won the Oscar and it was a GREAT movie!! (I recommend both of them)

This week includes some car repairs, volunteering and our monthly heart transplant dinner.

My first flower of the season ~

3/24/2010 ~

Rise', thanks for the nice comment. They are VERY precious to us!!

This week has been fairly busy. A few weeks ago I did my taxes but didn't E-file right away as I owed everyone. But, I hate to have things lingering, so on Monday I filed and paid the piper. We also ran a number of errands and before we knew it the day was gone. By 8pm I was ready to sit down and watch Dancing With the Stars. Then all kinds of stuff happened in 2 hours. First I got an email from the Fed's & State that my tax return had been rejected. The error was a "fat finger" mistake, so I hurriedly fixed the error and resent the taxes. In the mean time it started storming like crazy, hard rain non-stop thunder, etc ...... the "little people" called, so I missed one dancer, then we had a power flash from the lightening and I missed another dancer while waiting on the DVR to reboot. Two more phone calls ....... more rain, LOTS of thunder/lightening.

Tuesday, woke up to MAJOR news out of Cleveland that a church (huge, 140 year old building), that sat right next to the Cleveland Clinic's heart center, and basically surrounded by the Clinic's buildings had been struck by lightening and burned to the ground. The news said no patients or staff had been harmed and only a few people had to be moved. I was a bit worried because about half the heart & lung Tx people's rooms overlooked this church from the 8th floor. The balance of the day was busy doing our normal things and I got the bathroom one step closer to some paint.

Today I volunteered and saw a LARGE number or patients. Of course the talk was about the fire. Many didn't sleep much that night and stood and watched together as the roof of the church collapsed. The patient's rooms on the 8th floor had lots of soot and water spotting from the fire. They could feel the heat from the flames through their windows.

Thanks goodness that all were well. One even got a new heart yesterday!!

The loss was incredible for the congregation and the city.

Here's a pic I scabbed from the news .....

Here's what was left this morning. I took this from the 8th floor.

DAP:

Oh my goodness! That's terrible that the church got hit by lightening. I think I know which one it is. Could you see it from window on the 8th floor? Was it across the street from the Guest House? I walked down there many times and rested as we looked out the windows. That is just awful. I am glad though that no one was hurt. What a loss for that congregation. I will lift them up in prayer.

I am glad that there was no damage to the Clinic as well. That would have been hard to get all those patients out of that building. When I was there, they had a fire alarm go off. The nurses told us it was not for our floor. I think it was a small kitchen fire - no one knew for sure. Still kind of unnerving thinking that I might have had to evacuate the building. I wasn't moving very well at that point and didn't really want to go out in the cold.

Sorry that you missed Dancing with the Stars. We did not have a storm here. Just some rain. I have heard though that the prediction for this spring is a lot of thunderstorms and tornados. YUCK! I am terribly afraid of tornados. I always was and I still am.

I hope you got your taxes straightened out. I am glad that ours are done and e-filed. Fortunately, we don't have to pay this year. I am sorry that you guys do. My parents always seem to have to pay. It must be something to do with being retired. :-)

Have a great rest of the week!

God Bless!

3/28/2010 ~

Karen, Yes, this was the church straight across from the Guest House on Euclid. Even though it burned on Monday night, you could still smell the smoke odor on Thursday evening in the Clinic.

Wow!! Where has this week gone? Time has flown by once again.

Since my post on Wednesday let's see how life has been .......

Thursday evening was my transplant dinner at my Tx Center. I took my wife up that way early and we had lunch at a seafood restaurant by the name of "Mitchell's Fish Market". It was excellent. Then I took her shopping and I people watched. It started to snow late in the afternoon. The transplant dinner was nice. It was a smaller group, but we had fun and still didn't have enough time to speak with everyone. By the time we left, the snow had covered the ground and roads. We saw 2 bad accidents on the way home and the normal 1 hr, 15 minute drive took almost 2 hours. At times we had "white-out conditions".

Friday was spent in the gym and working in the bathroom and then lots of walking. My wife was cleaning out the pantry and it's my job to check for old dates and make the final decision to keep or trash. It was a tiring day.

Yesterday, we went and bought / installed a new light for our front porch. The old lost it's photocell during Monday's storm. We also walked quite a bit.

Today ...... not sure at this point. I need to make some positive progress on the bathroom paint job, so some time might be spent in there.

Life is good!!!

While I was volunteering at the Clinic the other day, I was surprised by my wife's cousin who had a liver transplant a year ago. I visited with her while she was recovering and have seen her a few times since. She's looking good and doing well. A very nice lady!!

This is Kim ~

3/30/2010 ~

FINALLY ~ major progress on painting the bathroom. Yesterday, I painted the ceiling and we also painted the linen cabinet and trim. That left the walls for today. It made for a LONG day, but the painting is done!! Tomorrow, after I get home from volunteering, I'll hang a new blind, new shower curtain & rod.

It's a good thing, as our weather is going to be very nice here for a few days. I really need (WANT) to get outside an do a few things in the yard and gardens.

(This took a while to write, as Dancing With the Stars results show had some of my attention)

Here's a glimpse of the bathroom ~

4/4/2010 ~

HAPPY EASTER!!!

I've neglected this blog for a few days, and I apologize for that. But, I will NOT apologize for the BEAUTIFUL weather we've been having here that is helping to keep me busy away from this key board.

It's been crazy busy here since last Tuesday evening. The bathroom shown above is totally complete now, which is a good thing. We've been walking outside every day and often in the evening as well. I've been starting to work on my FIL's taxes, a day of volunteering, took Mom to lunch, took FIL to lunch, went to the movies (When in Rome), and went to the gym and walked some more. Then we also had Easter to celebrate and all of the sudden, it's Sunday evening. Never ending fun.

It's also National DonateLife Month, which means I've been consciously talking to people daily about the benefits of organ donation. We are 4 days into the month and I've already had 25 people sign organ donor cards. I think the weather is helping ~ when it's nice, people listen better. Not as time consuming is my daily blog post on DonateLife Month ..... it's my duty.

Not a lot on this week's agenda ......... just more busy, busy, I'm sure.

Here's a new pic that will also go on my wall, as soon as I get another frame.

4/11/2010 ~

Oh my, it's been a week since I posted on my blog.

It's been a good, busy week and all is well.

I've got FIL's taxes done and ready to return to him. I've done some of the winter yard clean up, Been to the gym and volunteered. For the most part, the weather was decent, except we had some wet snow on Friday. Hopefully, that will be the last snow we see for many, many months.

My DonateLife Month series continues and I have pledges or had 47 people sign organ donor cards. If you don't understand this concept of organ donor cards versus the obviously preferred driver's license, please see my blog post here ~ http://my2ndheartbeat.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/intent/

Beyond all of the above, we've also been out and doing some serious car shopping. The lease is up on my wife's car in a couple weeks and we didn't have a clue what we wanted to do. After looking for a few days, I think we have narrowed down what we want and what we think we can afford. Now, we can get really busy, in what is always a distasteful task for us.

Last but not least, I have found that I have a new "passion". I had a dream a couple weeks ago that had a painting / drawing in it that is what I would call modern, or contemporary or abstract art ...... the name of this particular piece was called "The Heart Transplant" ..... I can't describe it now, but I have done a few searches and have seen some items that are amazing. I asked an artistic friend of mine and he found this, but we can't credit the unknown artist ....... I found this piece very interesting. Now, I'm seeking others.

4/13/2010

Life goes on, and quite nicely I might add.

The past 2 days have been totally consumed with finishing FIL's taxes (DONE!! Yeah!!) and doing a lot of car shopping / researching. The researching is going well, the shopping part is not going well. Yesterday, I remembered why I HATE going through this process.

The first vehicle that my wife and I saw, that we AGREED on was on a lot about 20 miles from us. It was a cool, but beautiful day so we took a drive down to see it. We looked it over, we drove it, we liked it. We inquired about the price and the salesman inflated the price by $3,000, from what was advertised. Needless to say, neither of us were pleased and we left in disgust. Why is this so difficult?

Anyway, today was another day and tomorrow we will look at some other vehicles.

Tomorrow is volunteer day and I hope that I have time to stop and look at a couple of vehicles on the way home.

Another heart friend of mine sent me another artistic "heart transplant". This one is titled "i need a heart transplant", by "mirror-fraction" on DeviantArt.com

All I can say is "interesting". (And NOT something I'll hang in my den, LOL)

4/15/2010 ~

Many of you may laugh, but after searching for a vehicle for the past couple of weeks, which included a large swing through 5 different counties after volunteering yesterday, we have found and made a deal on a vehicle. It's not new, but it is a pretty new, shiny red Jeep Commander. We pick it up tomorrow afternoon. After that, I'll be needing a break for a while. This was a long process/journey and I disliked almost every minute of it. (See pic below)

Next on the agenda will be to get outside and get more of the yard stuff completed. It doesn't look bad, just need to finish a few things and then get flowers once they are available.

Of course, if the new vehicle is too long to fit in the garage, I might be doing some rearranging of shelving units and workbenches. It's always something.

But, that's what life is all about and ........ LIFE IS GOOD!!!

Jeep Commander ~ I can fit my 2 grand kids in there easily and a couple more as well.

DAP:

What a nice car/Jeep!! We have been doing the same thing - looking for a car, but we are not having as much luck as you. Jerry sold his Dodge Ram truck about 2 weeks ago after weeks of going back and forth with people all over about the price and payment. He had 3 people interested in it from Kentucky, Colorado, and Michigan. None of these people had seen it in person and they all wanted to buy it. Basically, it came down to whoever could show up first with the money.

Okay, we got the truck sold. Now he has to find a new car. He is looking for a Honda Ridgeline. He goes all over looking at these things - even as we are driving up to Cleveland. Sound familiar?!?! LOL!! He has been looking for over a month now and he finally found one that suits him. I forgot to mention that he is a claims adjuster for Progressive now for 13 years. He knows about everything you would want or need to know about a car. He is a walking nightmare when it comes to buying a used car. He can tell if it has been wrecked and even what kind of accident it was in. Scary for people selling a car to him. So...he finds one that will do basically. He makes an offer they accept. We have now been dealing with the leasing bank and our bank for over a week to get this car sold and bought. NIGHTMARE Is all I can say. If I go into details, I would have to type all night long and you would be bored reading it.

So...long story short. We still have no car, but it is looks like we will by next week. I hope your experience was way better than ours.

At least you have your shiny new car!! It looks great!

God Bless!

Karen ~ I can really relate to your car searches. I went from the shores Lake Erie to 85 miles south of there to find the right vehicle at a decent price. I love the Ridgeline, but my wife said "NO TRUCKS". (I think she was afraid I might go to work or something)

What's been happening at DAP1122 World Headquarters? Well, on Friday, we went to pick up the SUV in the above post and as soon as we walked in the door a monsoon hit. It slowed enough by the time we had finished the paper work, so we headed home, when another monsoon hit. I was driving in the lead and down to 25 at times on the Interstate. We did get home OK. I also had labs drawn on Thursday and the Clinic called and said ALL looked good. They also changed my annual heart cath to Jun 1st.

On Saturday, we went to the movies and saw "To Paris With Love" with John Travolta. It had an extremely high bloody, body count and an even higher "F-bomb" count. Certainly NOT a movie I'd take my Mom to.

On Sunday we ran errands all day. I replaced my US Flag and did a few other tasks around the house. It was a day of relaxation.

Today, was a busy day as well. Went to the gym, took the SUV back to the garage to have an electronic key programmed (some chip thingie), took the convertible to be serviced and dropped it off, and did the "weed and feed" thing to the yard ..... with my perpetual mask.

Watching "Dancing With the Stars" as I tried to type this post.

Life is good.

Gail, Happy "extra" day 800!!!

Life is Good! I finally completed the garage rearranging yesterday and can fit the Jeep in there without any issues now. It's been a busy week, but a very productive one. We are now getting into the "traveling" mode as we leave on Friday to o see the "little people" for 10 days. We really MISS them.

Today we went to the movies and saw "Crazy Heart" Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for his role as "Bad Blake" in this movie. And, it was easy to see why. Awesome movie, in my opinion (and I'm not a huge CW fan).

Life is Good!!!

4/28/2010 ~

Three years ago, on today’s date, was when I was struck down by a heart attack that started me on this heart transplant journey. The heart attack was the initial event, and rapid subsequent events led me in a rapid downward spiral. (More details can be found in My Story, on the links at the top of my Wordpress blog)

The past couple have days have been extremely busy here at “My2ndHeartBeat World Headquarters”. My convertible has been in the shop for repairs, my wife’s car was leased and needed to be returned today, and we bought a different vehicle (Jeep Commander) to replace the leased car. So, we’ve been rotating cars, dealing with car repair places and all the other fun things that go along with buying and repairing cars. In addition there’s been some family issues with elderly parents that need to be dealt with on an almost daily basis.

Last night I noticed my wife was very “teary” and as I started to inquire she said do you what tomorrow is?

To her, it was one of the worst day of her life. In her top five, for sure. I understand and can see her point. She heard me hit my desk with my face, when the lights went out, she did CPR, she called 9-1-1, she did all the right things. It was difficult and still is when she reflects on those events. I know she’ll struggle over the next few weeks when she has time to think back.

Personally, I don’t dwell much on today’s date any longer. It was the initial event that started me on a path that I never saw my life heading. It could have been the beginning of the end, but it wasn’t. It was the abrupt start of a new, additional chapter in my life. To me, the BIGGEST event was my life saving heart transplant, 13 days in the future. May 11th, is the day my life was saved by my donor. That’s the day I get emotional …….. today, I’m simply thankful.

Today, after I volunteered and we made the final car shuffle of the day, we took a nice long walk. At one point we stopped, I put her hand on my chest and said “feel the beat”. “I’m here, and I’m staying”. She smiled and I gave her a hug and a kiss and we headed home.

It’s a difficult day for her. She struggles and I understand. Relief will come in 2 days, as we go see the grand kids. Her focus will change from one big kid (me), to the two “little people”.

Life goes on.

Life is Good!!!!

Wow, you made me cry! You are the ideal image of what a second chance at life is like. You live every moment, and love every moment. My favourite expression is "I'd rather five minutes of something wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special." I think what you said to your wife was so special. It's funny, to those around us that see us suffer its a painful journey and one they have a hard time dealing with. For us (and I hope one day to feel this for myself) its not only a journey of pain, but of awareness and self discovery and when that new lease on life comes, you hang on to that with every breath you take and say "now life begins and I won't waste one minute!" I hope when my chance comes that I don't waste one moment and that I stop sweating the small stuff because in the grand scheme of things, they really don't matter. What matters is that we have blood in our veins, our heart is beating and we are ALIVE and can go on another day to love those around us!
I wish you many more years of discovery and good health!

5/2/2010 ~

The first 3 days of our visit with the little people have been grand!!

The weather has also been very, very HOT here. About 90, the past 2 days. Yesterday was T-ball, and then walks and play time in 2 other parks.

All together, BLISSFULLY exhausting.

I've taken over 200 pictures already, but these are the only 2 on the PC at this point.

DAP:

Isn't is funny how even years later we remember certain life altering events as if they had just happened. I can relate to your wife being teary eyed on the day of your heart attack. I can remember the exact day that I started having shortness of breath. I can even remember what I was doing. It was Valentine's Day 2006. I was going to get an MRI and I noticed that I wasn't breathing well. I waited a whole week to go to the doctor because my doc was on vacation and I wanted to see him. Somedays I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't have waited.

I also can relate to your BIGGEST date of your life because I have one of those too now. I will never forget Dec. 1st at 2am when we got that phone call. I will never forget many things about that day. I will never forget that a family lost a loved one, but they were able to see through their grief to save my life and many others. Wow! That's an amazing thing and I am so very thankful they said yes to organ donation.

So...on May 11th we get to celebrate your 3rd Heart Transplant Anniversary. Wow! I am so thankful that your donor said YES too!!

I know you are enjoying your grandkids. What a great place to be so close to your anniversary. Will you be there on your anniversary? What better way to spend than with those precious little people!!

The pictures are absolutely adorable!! Have fun and play lots!!

God Bless!

5/10/2010 ~

WOW!!! What a GREAT trip!

We got back home safely this afternoon after 10 glorious days with the grand kids (ages 4 & 2). We were sad to go, and about 2 days ago they both started, "You no go home? You stay here!!"

It was a fabulous trip. The kids were excellent and I can safely say that I got LOTS of exercise. Last week we averaged 8 miles a day in the city. Usually pushing a double wide stroller. We saw T-ball, went to an outlet mall, went to a quaint old town (Skippack) outside of Philadelphia. we attended the kids (yes, both are in school) school's annual fund raiser auction, where we bid on and won 9 weeks of dance lessons for Isabella. On Saturday I got really brave and took both kids by myself to get Alexander's T-ball pictures taken. What a zoo ...... but all three of us survived and made the 10 block trip (one way) and back home safely.

One of the Mom's, and a friend of my son & DIL asked how we were "doing" ...... my most accurate answer was "BLISSFULLY EXHAUSTED". (pictures soon)

Three years ago yesterday, I was officially listed on UNOS.

If you look back to my last previous post, (4/28) you'll read a bit about one of the worst days in my wife's life ....... today, 3 years ago, was another.

As I grew worse with each passing day after 4/28/2007 ....... I hit rock bottom 3 years ago today. Her day started off with horrible news and then God intervened and there was hope.

Three years ago this morning my health deteriorated to the point where the transplant team called her early in the morning at the guest house and asked her to come over to the hospital immediately. She was told that I was so bad, that they needed to put me on the total artificial heart, CardioWest (Big Blue) IMMEDIATELY. She was told surgery would start in a couple hours, as soon as the got the team in place and the OR scheduled. Through her tears she managed to sign the surgery consent forms and went back to the guest house to call our son and a few other family members. By her own admission, she had a total meltdown. Then her cell phone rang again, it was the transplant team, requesting her to, once again, come back over to the hospital immediately. She thought it was even worse news .... possibly the end. But, this time she was told there had been a change of plans ~ that a heart had been located. There was hope.

The balance of the day, into the evening was filled with emotional ups and downs ..... until they confirmed the heart was good.

It was a heck of a day for her ....... as I slept.

Tomorrow she is taking me to dinner to celebrate my 3rd "birthday"!! That's great, but I'm taking her to dinner to celebrate HER. She was and is my rock.

BTW, when we got our mail today, my wife's new license plates were in the mail (we ordered them the day before we left) and I HAD to install them this evening........ she picked the DonateLife plates, but wanted something about the little people. These can be read a few different ways .....

I like them, period!!

Oh my goodness! I can't imagine what your wife went through the day that you got your transplant. Like you said - you were asleep, but she was there in limbo just waiting for good news. Praise God that He did intervene that day. What a miracle that they found a heart just in time. I am so glad they did. You are a gift not only to your family, but to everyone you meet! You are definitely a gift to all of us here at Transplant Buddies.

I hope your anniversary dinner was a nice celebration of your life and the love and support between you and your wife.

I love your license plates! They are just perfect for the both of you!!

5/15/2010 ~

Been a crazy week here since getting back home. The weeds had taken over and then the weather got nice so I've been outside attacking the yard and gardens. Looking good!!!

I wanted to share the lobby of the building my son lives in. Each time I walk through the front doors to the elevator at the other end, I am mesmerized.

5/20/2010 ~

Life is good ........ it's busy, but good!

It's been a very busy week to say the least. Last week was a week of celebration as we celebrated my 3rd transplant anniversary on a few different evening, with wonderful friends. It's also been a week of projects both inside and out as the grand kids are coming for a couple of days next week. It was supposed to have been a longer visit, but like daily life, things change, plans change. It was a bit depressing that they won't be here longer, but we are working through it. The yard and garden are really looking good. All of the flowers are planted, as are my tomato plants. I still have 6 pepper plants to plant and I think I'm done at this point. We also have a big birthday party planned this week for my wife's dad who will be 84.

I finally got all 358 pictures back from being in Philly with the grand kids 2 weeks ago. Here's one ........ engrossed in a cartoon on TV. This is what it's all about for me!!

5/28/2010 ~

The month of May has been total craziness and, at times, chaotic.

But, starting today, life should slow down a little and get back to normal.

The past week has been consumed with family members here, including our 2 grand kids, birthday parties, a trip to the farm, a couple of different parks and then we flew to Philadelphia on Wednesday to take the little people back and then flew back yesterday. I finished off the day by taking in our monthly transplant dinner.

Things will get back to normal now. The only major "event" on the agenda is my annual heart cath and biopsy, which is next Tuesday, Jun 1st.

Life is GOOD!!!!

6/1/2010 ~

Poster Boy!!

This evening, I'm a very tired "poster boy", at least for my transplant cardiologist.

Today was annual check-up. Labs, EKG, X-ray, Right & left heart cath were included. I admit I get pretty "wound up" before these particular tests. I did last year and I knew this year would not be any different.

I didn't sleep well at all last night for starters. I was up at 430am to get ready to go and we arrived at the Clinic at 645am. As I made my way through all of the prep, I knew I was "wound tight" At one point, my BP was 174/110, which is through the roof for me. I had a LONG (3 hr) wait in the prep area before they took me to the cath lab. The procedure went smoothly. My cardiologist said I was kind of" boring". Everything went well and there wasn't ANYTHING to discuss. He asked me about my daily walking goal of 7 miles/day and said that was awesome and made up for his hundreds of transplant patients that walk about 7 miles a YEAR. He said, you are my poster boy. I went to recovery and a couple hours later my BP was 107/68 ....... and I was ready to go home, it was 4:15pm.

Exhausted, but happy and VERY grateful!!!

Summer begins soon for us!!! Life is GOOD!!!!

Below ~ My grand daughter was dancing on top of my feet and my wife took this. I think she's smiling, because I didn't step on her.

Congrats on a great check-up! I am still at every 3 months and I look forward to when they let me go annually. I never sleep the night before either. Biopsy next month and clinic next week for me.

Isabella is a little doll. :-) All of the pictures of both little people make me smile. They are so cute.

Hi Dap

Congratulations on your great Report:-) Seven miles per day!

Have you ever tried to meditate before bedtime while thinking of a beautiful phrase as you breathe in and exhale. I heard counting back from 397 by three's is very helpful in falling to sleep.

Your granddaughter is precious!

6/5/2010 ~

Thanks for all the nice comments after my "annual" testing.

Meagan ~ I was on "every 4 months" for check ups and biopsies. This was my annual visit where they do a right & left heart cath. Now, I've graduated to "every 6 months" ~ next biopsy is Dec 1st.

And, yes, those grand kids mean the world to me. They keep me focused on the goal ~ "LIVING"!

Beyond my tests on Tuesday, we've had some very wild and crazy weather here. We've had multiple thunderstorms this week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and had one already today. Actually, I'm glad I'm getting a break from watering the plants this weeks since I'm on a 10 pound weight restriction.

Yesterday, we took our first "summer day trip". We jumped in the car and cruised about 100 miles east to the small town of Grove City, Pa. We ate at a fabulous restaurant, called Rachel's Roadhouse and did a little shopping at an outlet mall. Some of the trip was with the top down and listening to a variety of CD's ...... Eagles, Billy Joel, etc. We actually stayed dry most of the day due to timing.

Our plan is to take at least one "day trip" per week this summer.

Life is good!!

Life is also be AMAZING! This is so true ~

6/8/2010 ~

We have been busy living life here the past few days. On Sunday, we took another "road trip". First we headed north-west and did some shopping. We needed a father's day, birthday and graduation gifts. We did pretty well and got all but one item. Then we headed east and stopped for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and eventually arrived back home. Yesterday was clean, paint and tune up my grill and finally get all the deck furniture out. All was accomplished. Today was a day to do some painting. I painted the front porch and all the outside door thresholds.

Tomorrow, is back to volunteering after a 2 week hiatus. Was off a couple weeks ago when we had the grand kids, and last week due to soreness after my heart cath. I'm ready to GO tomorrow.

Life is GOOD!!

A couple of friends I met at a memorial Day picnic ~ (apparently rescued horses)

6/12/2010 ~

Happy Birthday, Dad ..... you would have been 88 today!

We've had another busy week of living and enjoying life. Wednesday was volunteer day, which is always good. Thursday we had gorgeous weather here and we took another road trip to the small towns of Chagrin Falls and Hudson OH. A nice, quaint, little, yet busy towns. We hung around there most of the afternoon and then took a drive to eat at a restaurant that has my most favorite patio. I saw they had "beer can chicken" on the menu so I ordered that ........ OMG (see pic below)

Yesterday the weather wasn't as good but we had plenty or errands to run, and overall it was good day. Today, we went to the movies and saw "Date Night" which was pretty funny.

I didn't expect the entire chicken, NOR did I eat all of it ........

6/22/2010 ~

WOW!!! It's been 10 days since I posted on this blog?!?!?

It's summer in Ohio and we have been busy living and enjoying life. Let's see what's been happening in my little world.

We took a one day trip to the tiny historic town of Coshocton OH, and low and behold there was a HUGE Corvette show there that day. About 200 'Vettes ~ Pretty awesome ~ See picture below.

Trimmed bushes one day, which wore me out in the heat.

Our "adopted" daughter from Romania was in the States for a friend's wedding, so we had lunch with her one day.

Volunteered ~ which is always awesome. One of my friends that was on the full (total) artificial heart was transplanted and I got to visit with him.

I worked on a few dents and scratches on my car. (still am working on this) ....... sanding, touch up paint, etc.

Went to a "Cruise-In" car show this past week and saw lots of old cars, Hot rods, customs, etc.

Went to my nephew's graduation party and I became the designated photographer. I took few hundred pictures ........ and I wasn't in any of them.

And, back to volunteer tomorrow .....

Life is good, indeed!!!

This 'Vette caught my eye -

Hi Don
I thought of you today at my transplant center. I remember you stating that you do not sleep well the night before your tests. I slept for about six hours but not a full night. I told some of the techs that I am not the only one who gets jittery before tests. I know I am going to do well but sometimes I get a little uptight for a few moments here and there.
Cool license plate. Love the color of the vette.

6/28/2010 ~

The summer continues to be busy here at DAP1122 World Headquarters, which is the way it should be. Last week included a day of volunteering, plus our monthly heart transplant dinner at the Clinic. Both went very well.

We've been taking day trips, working outside with the plants, working on the car, etc, etc ...... the day is busy from early morning to late night.

I've been looking for a way to improve my (other) blog on Wordpress. It has some limitations and I wanted to be able to post more pictures, start some discussions, and so on.

So, after looking around at a lot of different ideas, it seemed that maybe the cheapest (I'm all for CHEAP, LOL) way was to create a Facebook Business page that's linked to my blog. It's been a humbling lesson so far. I have the page created but half the time I can't find it. So, I'm learning new things, which is also good.

If you'd like to check it out, please click this link (and I hope you click the "Like" button at the top-middle of the page.) ~

7/8/2010 ~

HOT, HOT, HOT!!! Well, that describes the weather in this part of the country. I'm not complaining though as it sure beats ice, snow, freezing rain and the like.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!!! It's been non-stop here recently. We had a good, yet busy Independence Day, that included a small picnic here. All kinds of small jobs that needed to be taken care of have been worked on which hasn't allowed time for any day trips over the past week or so.

LeBron, LeBron, LeBron ~ I have to write a little about this. In about 30 minutes LeBron will tell the world where he is going to play basketball. For those of you that do not live any where near NE Ohio, let me tell you that the past few weeks have been as bad, or even worse than any pre-election/circus coverage you could even imagine. It's ALL LeBron morning, noon and night, 24 hours a day, eight days a week. Not only with the media, but stores and businesses have their own billboards out as well, every media outlet is making this the number one story Now, I admit this might be important to some folks, but there are things that are WAY more important to dwell on (organ donations, to name one!!!!). Thank goodness it will be over soon. (For the record, I think he's staying in Cleveland, but I'm no expert on the NBA)

My son and his family is in Romania on vacation. By all accounts, through the calls, text messages and pictures sent, they are having a good time. Yesterday, they were up in the mountains and got caught in some 33 degree weather. (It was 101 in their hometown in PA)

Life is GOOD!!!

That must be some dream she's having ...................

7/9/2010 ~

I also posted this on my "other" blog earlier today, but wanted to share this.

Recently a gentleman wrote to me via my blog and asked about one of my graphics. He also wanted to share a heart transplant song with me, that he had written and performed.

The gent's name is Don Muller and his website is ~ http://sites.google.com/site/mullsmusicsite/

The song is titled "I Lost My Heart Along This Road" and this is what Mr. Muller says about it on his web site ~

I Lost My Heart Subject

Although it sounds like a straight ahead love song, this song is actually about a Heart Transplant. The singer was in a motorcycle accident, and was an organ donor.

The sex of the donor is not important, and his heart was transplanted into a woman. They will not allow a transplant twice, so his heart is hers forever. The identity of the donor is usually kept from the person who receives the transplant. However, the woman in this song hires a detective to find out who. Because his gravesite is not available to her for some reason, she puts flowers along the road where he died every year on the date of the accident, to honor the man who saved her life.

Corny, but aren't Country songs supposed to be corny?

While I was looking for a graphic to go with the song, I came across this blog on the subject. Total coincidence, but goes perfectly with the song.

You can listen to it at this link (it's the second one down) ~ http://sites.google.com/site/mullsmusicsite/home/original-music

I was truly humbled and honored.

If you PM or email me, I'll be happy to share the MP3 file with you.

PS: The LeBron thing is over (thankfully), and I told you I didn't know anything about the NBA.

7/12/2010 ~

Starting tomorrow I'll be away from the main keyboard at DAP1122 World Headquarters for a week. I will be taking my love and the portable keyboard on "Big Bird's" back and we are headed south for a week. This will be the first vacation we've taken by ourselves since before my transplant. Usually, our trips include our son, grand kids or other family members. But this time, we are going to be a bit selfish and have almost the entire week to ourselves. One day we are going to our nephew's birthday party, otherwise it's fun, sun, sand and each other's company.

Our son and his family are still in Romania. If you look at the map below, the landed in Bucharest, made their way up to Sibiu where they spent about 5 days in the mountains. Then they made numerous stops on the way to Iasi, the town where our daughter-in-law grew up. They will spend a couple more days there and then go back to Bucharest and head home. We've been getting pictures every day and it's easy to see they are having fun.
