When dealing with unpleasant thoughts, I have found my own personal technique that works for me.

I came up with this concept when I was waiting for my second transplant.

As soon as I hear an unpleasant thought that could stem from fear, worry, guilt, regret or any other negative emotion. If the thought attaches to something of the past or future that I have no control over, I simply
say to myself, Reflect, Affect, Deflect, Accept

These words are attached to several meanings for me.

The word Reflect acknowledges that I was thinking of the unpleasant thought.

Affect is a signal that my thought is going to negatively affect me emotionally and physically if I do not let go.

Deflect is the acknowledgement of detaching or getting away from the thought.

Accept is the action that I am taking to acknowledge that this memory took place however, I have learned to accept it.

I hope this makes sense to you. This works for me. I am not sure if this is a hypnotic process but whatever it is, I like these sort of identification techniques. If you can practice this daily, you will stop the fearful thoughts that can trigger painful thoughts.

In the past whie practicing this technique, I called this process,"Control, Install, Action"

Hi Risa,

I LOVE this! Great Job! You are empowering yourself and others by sharing this and it is great advice. When we can acknowledge what we are doing than we have the tools to change it if it is unhealthy to us.

We all have things that give us fear, it is when we face that fear and chose to take action against it that we win. And, it has to become habit, doing the right things over and over again against the wrong things-that is indeed something that i am working on also.

We are human, not perfect, and all we can ask of ourselves is to take the next right step, action towards the right thing, the changes we want, the right things we desire.

Thank you for this post today for it reminded me what I need to do also!

You are the best,
Dottie
