Here is a blog I started a year ago on the Cysticfibrosis.com website. I do not have the time go and visit as often as I like. I am going to use this thread as my blog instead and keep my CF blog for times I want to spread the word about CF related news.

Feel free to comment and ask questions on my TREAD THREAD here

I wrote a children's story called "What is the Mad Dog" in 1991. A few months later, I went to a CF camp and performed during talent nite. I had all the little kids sitting in a circle. I bought them all hand held mirrors and they would look into the mirror at the appropriate times during the story and repeat some of the phrases below. I have this on a VHS tape. This story is dedicated to anyone who thinks like a Mad Dog. Back in the nineties, Rap was big as you all know and I wrote a song called "The Mad Dog Fight Back"

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mad Dog. Not a Bad Dog, a real live fighting Mad Dog. A dog who loves life and doesn't give up, no matter how the times might seem rough. The Mad Dog doesn't bite, he has keen insight. He just fights with all his might. He fights everyday with all his jive with the main purpose, to stay alive.

He keeps on fighting then he says…(children look in the mirror)
I am the Mad Dog, that sounds good
I have the Mad Dog, and it feels good
I do like the Mad Dog, he knows what to do.
Listen children lets go to the Mad Dog School. You know what to do so act real cool. Study real hard and remember my golden rule. Hold your head up high, you know who you are, believe in yourself for you will feel a million miles in the sky. The Mad Dog will always help us around. Don't worry you can't end up in the lost and found. Remember! Things may not go your way, it doesn't mean your thoughts should turn to gray.

We keep on fighting then we say...(Just look in the mirror)
I am the Mad Dog, that sounds good
I have the Mad Dog, and it feels good
I do like the Mad Dog, he knows what to do.
Sometimes people say you can't do it , you are crazy, then we feel bad and sometimes lazy. When we feel that people are mean, we must remember that they have problems with their steam. So keep a positive attitude, you can be shrewd but the Mad Dog doesn't get rude. He is just always in a cool mood.

We keep on fighting then we say...
I am the Mad Dog, that sounds good
I have the Mad Dog, and it feels good
I do like the Mad Dog, he knows what to do.
When we get together, we have so much fun. At times we may feel different, we know we can be Number 1! Look in the mirror and say I want to be who I am and accomplish everything that I can. Our future looks bright, one day the Mad Dog won't even have to fight. We will feel so healthy, we will say everything is going to be all right.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall who is the GREATEST MAD DOG of them all?...(look in the mirror).

The Mad Dog is Back, Fight Back
You know just what you have to do
You've got to fight it before it gets to you
If you do your therapy just the right way
It will help you get through each and every day

You can have the Mad Dog too
Don't be a fool it might sneak up on you
So work real hard and minimize the pain
You've got to believe to maximize your gain

After you let go of the negative thought
Think of the difficult battle you just fought
You all have got to have a goal
And when you achieve it, it will fulfill your soul

Fighting can be fun if you allow your days to have a short run
The Mad Dog isn't wrong
He takes his pills with his meals so he can grow to be strong

He takes his meds to fight the bugs, and when he feels better,
he gives more hugs
There may be a time when we all feel down
Just remember to smile and not to frown
Because the Mad Dog - He won't leave town.

Fast forward to 2000, one of our members named Don introduced me to Bobby Seeback (heaart tx recipient). We chatted and I shared my above Mad Dog story with him. He was inspired to write his own version of Mad Dog. When I was very sick a year before my second transplant, he sent me a copy on tape to where I was staying in chicago. I cannot tell you how much this meant to me especially when I was sick.

Bobby just emailed me today with his final recorded version Mad. You can listen to it on his Myspace account.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=127784 911

After you listen to "Mad" click on "Transplant"

He wrote a great song about his heart Transplant.

Thank you Bobby

Hi Heather

When we have a visitor, each visitor that clicks on a link counts as one page request. It could be page requests from all the various links like they library, arts and I believe our forum as well. I had no clue as to how many people were clicking.

We could have one thousand visitors for the day and have seven or more thousand page requests. Some hit counters just count page requests. Our hit counter only calculates visitors. I get all my traffic facts from my hosting account.

Risa,

I think your site statistics are working well. My more manual effort shows that this past Thursday was the highest day this month for "hits" on the site, and also the highest day for number of posts. It was also second for best "posts vs hits" ratio.

I know yours are more accurate, due to timing, since I take a snap shot each morning between 730-800am Eastern time.

It's kind of amazing that we have an approximate 90% "lurker rate" .... in other words, lots of people reading ..... just not posting, for one reason or another.

Yes Thursday's are the most popular day by far. I find this very interesting news and wonder what it could be? Maybe people access this site from work and those might have friday off :-) I have no clue I will have to look at the times and get back to you.

Could the lurkers be our own members? I know that there are many times when I just get on and read the posts and don't always post a remark or comment. This is probably the case for me more often than not. Does your counter go by IP addresses? Mine is fixed at work, but at home my IP address is random for each time I log on to the internet being that my laptop is a mobile device with a mobile wireless internet card. Just curious.

I will post some logs for you to see. Every single day we have unique visitors and loyal visitors. I would say on average that the unique vistors are half of the total amount which is a large population. I had no idea that we were attracting so many new people. About 2000 of the people return that were unique. I will post some more graphs. Dap is right on the money.

Jeff ~ I do the same thing at times ...... I'll get on the site and read, but maybe don't post at that time. So, yes, there are some members lurking as well. :-) There's nothing wrong with it, but if there are more posts, that can lead to more questions, which can lead to more information, more conversations.

Risa, I know nothing about being a Webmaster, but a few sites that I am a member of, post Viewer Counters above each individual post such as this:

View * Edit * Delete * Viewers

This way each visitor can see who visited earlier. All they need to do is click onto the * Viewers * button.

You're beautiful, Risa!!!

Hey -- I don't know if it's possible with your web techies -- and maybe everyone won't agree -- but all of the threads on these forums start with the first post at the top, and the most recent post at the bottom... I think that is a logical order when you are posting a question and looking for answers/comments - and that is a logical order when one is commenting on a blog post...

But most blogs seem to have the most recent posting at the top -- and older posts as you scroll down... On a blog, you can open it up and see immediately what the person is posting about -- and if you need more information, scroll down to earlier stories... Here, you need to scroll all the way down to the bottom to see the latest updates...

Can your techies reverse the sort when it comes to the blog forum? I'm not 100% sure where they would put the "add your message here" box -- if they reversed everything, that would end up at the top so that someone could respond to the most current post...

I contribute to one -- and I follow a bunch -- and I'm no blog expert... But I think the layout here might disuade people from regularly following...

Hope you're doing well!!!

Love,

Steve

Risa:

Is your hair naturally that curly? I love it!! I have wanted hair like that all my life. I used to pay lots of money for perms, but I never got waves and curls like that.

I don't know if I have any new pictures of us. I posted Sammy's birthday pictures from March with me in them. I also posted the 4th of July pictures. We will have to take some more soon.

This picture is beautiful too. You look so healthy and vibrant!! It just makes me so happy to see you with that wonderful smile!! :-)

Hi Karen

Yes my hair is curly wavy. The longer it gets the better it looks. I always had long layers and I found that my hair looks better with long layers only along the side. The back needs to be all one length. My goal is to have my hair another three inches tops.
I thought your hair is wavy?

Check out this bracelet. I am thinking of selling and designing many different organ donor awareness pieces. They are all hand crafted and they only use genuine stones. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belt buckles etc... First I will design a few pieces and see if they sell. It will be good pocket money as I will be the middleman. Do you think I should go for it? The piece around my neck is something that was made from this company. I designed it. It is a one of a kind. I drew out the piece and told them what stones I wanted used.

OMG! Risa, these pieces are awesome! I just love the designs!!
WOW!

Love, Kelli

P.S. As Steve mentioned, having the most recent posts at the bottom of a long thread does make it difficult to keep up and keep track. I think I end up missing a lot since scrolling sort of messes me up. It is better to have the most recent posts at the top (the common format) like reverse chronological order, IMHO.

I love the jewelry. I had no idea that you could make a design and have someone make the jewelry for you. That's really cool. I really liked the necklace you have on in the picture. It really compliments you well.

Thank you Betty

If she wants a cuff butterfly bracelet what is her size wrist?

Tell me exactly what she likes. Any type of butterfly? Does she want a ribbon in the mix? What colors because you can select your stones. You can have a flower, butterfly and a ribbon but this design will be extremely big.

Most of their work is bold; however, you can order a small pendant either an organ donor ribbon in malachite or a butterfly inside of a heart. and the width would be around 1/3/4 or you can have it slightly smaller.

If you want a pendant what size length and height. An average is fine. I will then call them and send in your request and find out how much it will cost etc and then you decide if you want to buy it.

If you have something in mind maybe it is already created. Please explain what you are looking for.

Risa let me check with my brother and see what she would wear most often I'm thinking of this as a suprise for her. I like the idea of a braclet the one on the top is my favorite. She's my sister-in-law She stepped up when my brother was found to be an unsuitable doner. God I love her! To include a donor ribbon would be awesome

My brother said a pendant over a bracelet for a 16 inch chain She likes the monarch butterfly so yellow/orange and black with a small donor ribbon in one of the wings or where the little circle thingies are on the post of the one with the flowers (or in-between the wings) She's 5 foot 1 and all heart. If you're thinking this might be too big then maybe a bracelet. Could you e-mail me approximate estimate/timeline. We are not permitted to use the internet for personal reasons :-( at work so it may be a few days before I can get back Thanks Betty

Risa,
I think you are an absolutely beautiful woman both inside and out. I think that everything you touch turns to gold, in a matter of speaking, and that you should take a shot with the jewelry.
You are an inspiration to so many. Oh and I lOVE the story. You truly are a talented woman.

Love ya.

Thank you Bob
Gary Klausner is my friend and I asked him to send me his news articles. I remember I was very sick when he was interviewed for The Queer Eye show. What a great experience he had with his friends and his family. Boomer Esiason made a 40th birthday party for him.

Yes, I just simply click the "Save As" button and save as if the PDF file is a pic, then after the file is pulled up, it can be magnified for easier reading.

Today is Thursday and I have tons and tons of things to do. I will be around but will not be posting too often. If anyone needs me, please email me.

There are hundreds of registered members who are not able for some reason to log on and post. I am going to concentrate on writing to these people to see what is up on their end. Those who really want to join usually write and ask for help. I will see what happens when I write to them.

I know I have very dedicated Forum Leaders and since I am blessed, I am going to take this time to value this opportunity and spend my time behind the scenes for a few weeks until all my tasks are complete.

A big Thank you for all your help
Love
Risa

PS: Looking for a volunteer who knows how to upload a VHS tape onto the internet. I have two independent videos in VHS. One is a production that I worked for months in 1993 and the other one was taped in 1991. They are children videos with the theme about CF. They are worthwhile seeing IMHO (in my humble opinion). If you are a member and know me, please email me and we will talk.

Risa, as far as converting your VHS tape to digital, you should be able to find some place in your area that can take the tapes and burn them on to DVD's. Just tell them that you need the proper file format so that you can then transfer from DVD to your computer and then upload to a site such as YouTube.

Risa, Jeff is absolutely correct about transferring contents from a VHS to DVD's. There is a difference in the DVD's, so be sure to tell them that you want to upload on the Internet. I had some keepsake VHS tapes done very recently, very inexpensive.

This is the website for our local PhotoSource. http://www.photosourcetx.com/ I know this doesn't help you there in Florida, but it gives you an idea about these companies.

I had many appointments at my tx clinic yesterday. I met two very interesting people who I will never forget and for this experience alone, I did not mind waiting two hours for my CT scan.

I was sitting and talking to a young man named Romaine about the election and after a half hour, I asked him why he needed a CT scan. I told him why I was there. He told me he was hoping to have his tracheostomy repaired. He was a gun shot victim and was living with a trach for six years. He looked very healthy and I was amazed when he lifted his scarf to show me his trach collar. He said he cleans his trach himself and also works out. I told him to tell his story online. Even though he is not a transplant patient or lung patient, his story would inspire many. If he creates a blog, I will post his website. He was shot in the neck and then had trouble breathing. He was not on a respirator for long but required a trach. There is a lot more to this story and if Romaine decides to tell his story, then you will all hear it too. For now, I ask you all to pray for him.

Then after he left, I met a much older lady who use to smoke and recently developed throat cancer. She said she had to have all her teeth removed in order to have radiation and chemo. I enjoyed talking to her.

Then after she left, I was all alone. I decided to stand in the hall and wait. I saw a nurse and asked her if she could find out why I had to wait so long. When she spoke, I recognized her voice and asked her if she worked in the ICU. She took care of me on the night shift. She then recognized me and we chatted and then she called all the other nurses out that knew me. We talked and talked.

So all in all, waiting for almost three hours was not so bad. Hopefully next year, I will find another place where I will not have to wait so long. CT is the only place that has a long wait because they are repairing a machine. I had a choice to go to another center with no wait but was not sure how to get there. OH well, no regrets at all. Cool people means precious time spent.

I agree DAP, the only part of the twice weekly, once a week, etc. tx clinic visits that I miss was visiting with the other patients. We all came from different backgrounds, but we all had something in common to talk about. I used to play catch in the hallway with a little boy named Jose, age 4, who had a kidney tx about a week before me and I loved this black lab that one of the patients had for a service dog. Every now and then I wonder how the people I met in clinic are doing today.

Risa, you have a lot of thick lushy curly hair. You look great! I love your butterfly pendant that goes onto a necklace. How much are you going to sell them for? I really like to get that 4th one down in the middle. the colors are so cheerful and bright. I love baby blue two tone color on it.

I cannot believe myself. Here I create a blog section and never post on my blog.

Oh well,
here goes

The past few weeks have been quite emotional for me on this website. TransplantBuddies always brings me joy. When I want to feel a grounding in life, I tune in. YES there are sad times when I read stories when one of my buddies is not well. Knowing that I can pray and think about them helps me feel better.

Supporting one another is what we all do and do it well. Without all of you, I could not feel as good as I do feel. If you do not believe me, come over and take my computer away and then call me a few days later.:-)

Just wanted to say that I enjoyed talking on the Radio show with Rosemarie. That was a complete shock that Roe plugged Transplantbuddies so much and with love. I think I got carried away with excitement but I needed that. I was in need to really FEEL. You know sometimes we have to shout with joy or cry or scream. I was able to FEEL. Did Frampton have a song about that? Now I know I am getting old. LOL

I have received many gifts of thanks from the members. I do not need thank you's but I sure do get them often and let me say this, If I died tomorrow, I will be a very fulfilled lady. I almost said young lady but I will be fifty next year lol
Ok, I can be called a young older lady.

LOVE All my BUDDIES
You all ROCK

PS: I had my webmaster post some new photos, life stories, and we added some more sponsors to our Thanks page. He is now working on my Chat Software.

I better go and eat lunch. I am spending too much time online.

Jan 21 1996 was the day I had my first double lung tx. This is a date, I will always treasure. I have two battered operated candles that I turned on and they will stay lite all evening. I said a prayer of thanks to my first Donor family. Even though I no longer carry the lungs from my first Donor, I am here today because of him. God Bless my First Donor and his Family.
