I thought I would experiment with my Blog and write a series of reflections and questions. I'll just see what happens with it.

Some of my posts may invite a comment and it will be interesting to hear what others think. Some may not generate any interest.

Have you ever wondered if you truly “create your own reality.”? It seems to be the current new age core belief. I am not a new age guru, I am not Wayne Dwyer, or Bruce Lipton or Deepak Chopra. I have loved reading about new age concepts, and many of these ideas resonate for me. But I am posing this question to explore it in more detail. I am open to the answers.
I thought that I was a normal middle aged woman. In my younger years I was a passionate out doors woman with positive and high energy. I loved hiking, skiing, kayaking, scuba diving and travelling in off the beaten path places. I did well in my career as a nurse, came from a happy family, and had close relationships with friends.
A series of challenges and obstacles appeared in my life. For me it has been one big event after another. Lest I sound like a drama queen or a victim I need to add that my life events are likely no harder than many of yours, and I have also had a great many joys. I have fully embraced each challenge and tried to deal with things as positively as I could. I also received the gift of life with a liver transplant in Nov 2008 and am alive today because of it.
But I do have trouble believing that I have created this reality. Is this just a way of empowering people who have done very well in their lives and disempowering or blaming those who have had challenges.
Having a positive attitude in dealing with life challenges absolutely makes a difference. There is a great deal of literature to support this. But I believe this is somewhat different from creating your own reality. I also wonder if some of the writers of this genre truly understand how difficult it can be to keep ones spirits up, to keep positive in the face of chronic adversity. Having said that, there are many people who have managed to do just that. They keep positive, they focus on what they do have, they motivate others in spite of immense difficulties and obstacles in their own lives.
What do you think? Do you believe that we create our own reality?

Be patient to all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions instead-Rainer Maria Rilke}

My partner and I argue over which one of us actually took the photo. It was taken a couple of years ago in Cancun Mexico.
Doesn't it make you feel like getting on a surf board? I have to say, when I look at it, I kind of feel old, as I no longer feel like giving it a try.

Diane,

Great blog idea!

Here are some on my thoughts.

At times I think I'm the luckiest on the planet. Great wife, great son, great career, fantastic grandchildren, and I've died over a hundred times and yet, here I am.

But, then I also think about those darkest days in my life ~ the loss of 2 children and the heart attack that led me down the path to a transplant. During those times, my life was touched by others in profound ways.

I think we are on a path, we don't know where it might lead, but if we follow the light (for me, that's God) we will take the right path. When we come to "forks" in the path, I look for the light to guide me.

I also think there is a "plan" for each of us ....... the plan changes by lives we touch and those that touch us.

I also believe that our attitude towards life is extremely important ~ one of my favorite quotes is this ~

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude can cause a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst ....... a spark that create extraordinary results.

For me, God helps me with the above quote.

LOL, OK, I am done rambling.

Don,
I still have that saying hanging on my frig to read every morning and start my day off in the right frame of mind!
As far as creating your own reality... i BELIEVE IT IS ALL IN YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARD SITUATIONS YOU FACE AND HOW YOU OVER COME THEM.
I too believe it is God that is directing me in this life. I pray every morning for God to guide my thoughts. actions and words during the day. I have definetly learned I can not not do life on my own. Is that creating reality?.....

My sense is that the popular literature implies that if we think positively, and have a positive attitude, the world is your oyster and you can manifest whatever you wish. I do agree with your comment Holly “I believe it is all in your attitude towards situations you face and how you over come them.”

Many people have had (or still have) some very dark moments. It is so easy to spiral down and go to the victim place or grieve over all that we have lost rather than focus on the gratitude for what we have.
While not formally religious, I too have very strong beliefs in a higher power. This has increased exponentially since my Transplant. In my darker moments, my conversations with God or Higher Power bring me a wonderful sense of peace. I just know there is a bigger picture that I will never understand. I have been given the gift of life……this time. But if things were to change, although I love life, I am not afraid, and know that it is just part of the bigger plan. For me, my transplant has brought yet another gift. I feel psychologically stronger than I ever have, and I have so much gratitude.

I do think that this belief of creating your own reality has a dark side. There is no doubt that having a positive attitude helps each one of us cope with our challenges. But to imply that those people who have “sailed” through life with little in the way of obstacles, have created their realities is not accurate. It puts them on a pedestal so to speak. Life can be like a card game. You have no choice around the hand that you are dealt, but you can choose how to play your cards. I believe that to insinuate that those people who have huge challenges in their lives have created their own realities just adds a layer of guilt and possibly shame to an already difficult time.

Thanks for sharing your own beliefs. How do you create your own reality? How do you cope in the dark times?

Diane:

I love your willingness to bring things out in the open. I have thought about your question and to be quite honest my brain is not in a place to respond. I feel like all I have done this last week is exist. I am trying to get all the things done that I need to get done, but all I want to do is sleep. I was so tired. I am feeling better now. I think as you explore these questions you will find your answers.

Great picture! It looks like it should be on a postcard.

I think I have found a convoluted way of resizing my photos, so they aren't so big.
It's been a surreal year. So many gifts. The next 2 photos were taken in Nov last year (2008) before my transplant. You can see the beautiful city of Vancouver through the window. Talk about a room with a view

Diane:

Great news! I love hearing "great bill of health." Enjoy each day with your Sweetie!

I love the boats and the waterfront. We used to live in Cincinnati and would go down to the waterfront for shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, etc. It wasn't as beautiful as your waterfront, but it was always fun to be there and watch the big boats and the tug boats going down the Ole Ohio River.

I'm experimenting with this blog. It's a way of keeping track of my own progress. It does make me feel a little vulnerable writing about my own experiences and posting it for others to read. I'm not really sure how many people read the personal blogs.....I do appreciate the feedback from those who have taken the time to write.

But part of me feels a little uncomfortable as I feel like in this blog I am focused on me, me, me.

For all of us, I think it is a way of processing what has happened to us and our subsequent journeys. I will experiment in this blog with my writing, with whether I am more comfortable with just posting photos. It will be interesting to see how this progresses.

I am also posting the link to the journal article about my case, I had an unusual illness with Parvo B 19 virus and going into fulminant liver failure.

Hi Diane

I love your blog. I wish I had more time to blog. I am always trying to do this and that around here and only have so much time for me when it comes to this website. You have inspired me to help answer some of your questions.

You certainly can make many of us think. If you look around to all the blogs out in blogland, not too many people respond. A blog is really for just you and your friends and family. You probably have many folks here who read your blog but choose not to post.

Keep in mind, your writings are precious and for that, I would keep on sharing.

A blog to me is like a biography of your life. you can weave in and out and talk about anything you like.

I am quoting something I read from wignet.com

"CASE REPORT

A 55-year-old immunocompetent woman who was born in Canada presented to her family physician and subsequently a local emergency room with a two week history of fatigue, general malaise, nausea with emesis, anorexia, dark urine and pruritus. She was noted to be jaundiced and complained of mild arthralgias in her upper extremities. One week prior to developing these symptoms, she was a passenger on a commercial airplane flight and assisted an ill jaundiced passenger who had vomited. She was a retired registered nurse with no risk factors for viral hepatitis. She denied the use of herbal remedies and acknowledged minimal alcohol consumption. On initial assessment, she was afebrile with marked icterus, no hepatosplenomegaly or ascites and mild asterixis."

Can you explain your story in more detail please. You were on board a plane and because you were such a saint, you helped a stranger and then contracted their virus?

Perhaps you can link your story to your blog here up at the top, you can start a new thread within your blog. When you open up this thread at the top it says Start a new Thread. This would be ideal for those who want to get to know more about you.

Diane:

Is that your story? You were written up in a medical journal. That's cool, but the liver failure is not cool. I am glad that they were able to figure out what was wrong and get you a new liver. You must have been is such a state of shock. Like Risa - I would love to hear more about your story in plain english. Not that medical jargon. LOL!!

Yes Rise', you are right. I think a blog is likely a personal journey, and I ask myself reflective questions. If others pitch in and respond with their own experiences that is great. I know that others are busy with their own valuable time and will likely only respond to that which resonates for them.

Yes the link is my story published by my team in the World Journal of Gastroenterology. We don't know where I got it, but I was infected with Parvo B 19 virus (no, not the cat and dog variety). It is also known as Fifth's disease in children. More than 50% of the population have been exposed as children and have developed antibodies. Many children also have serious consequences to this virus.

We don't know for sure where I picked it up, but last year in Oct I flew to meetings in Toronto, and on the flight they called for a nurse or a Dr for a Medical Emergency. Turns out it wasn't actually an emergency, but a poor older lady suddenly took ill and vomited everywhere. (YUCK) I checked her vital signs and helped clean her up (with gloves of course). I noticed that the whites of her eyes were a bit yellow. Within 4 days of that I started to get sick, and this fits with the incubation period of the virus.

But it is a common virus, and not a reportable one. There is no way for sure to know where the virus came from. The older lady was likely never checked for this virus herself. I suppose I could just as easily have gotten it from a child who may have coughed as we waited in line.

In any case it jazzed up the Transplant Team as my case was so unusual. It was not really the Club I had planned on joining. But I was extremely lucky, as so many people do not make it to Transplant. I almost didn't. I have truly been blessed with the gift of life.

Diane,

You truly are an amazing and kind person helping that lady out without a second thought to yourself. You must have been a terrific nurse. I read the medical report but there was a lot of medical talk I didn't understand of course. It's scary to think a virus that could lead to a life threatening medical condition could be contracted so easily and lead to you needing a transplant.

I am enjoying your blog and look forward to reading more of it and seeing more pictures.

Yes, he was a pretty special elephant. We had wanted to go to an elephant rehab reserve to see them in a more natural environment, but it was too expensive. Although I am not big on training animals to do silly little tricks for humans, these guys seemed to be healthy and to have fun. They were quite mischievious.

The guy in this picture kept leaning on me, and would wrap his trunk around me. Sometimes he would take his Mahout (trainer)'s hat off of him with his trunk and pop it on my head. He seemed to really be enjoying himself playing around with the tourists.

Karen,
I think we both were enjoying the experience. It was wonderful.
I am so glad to hear that you are doing so well after your transplant.
It was a loooong wait for you, but sounds like you got the perfect pair of lungs.

Great pictures Diane. I really like the last one to the far right as I say it a lot. The second one is great with all the fresh flowers and fruit. I would love to go somewhere exotic like that. The sights are just beautiful.

I seem to be changing the tone of my blog from reflections to photos. Thanks for your comments everyone. I do enjoy taking photos, but sure have a lot to learn.

I will post some of my home community and then some of Vancouver celebrating the Olympics. It was a fantastic time to welcome guests to our province and country. Very inspiring stories.

I am inspired by Brian's posts to write each day about a few things that I am grateful for.
Even if I do not post these daily, I am going to try to take the time to commit these thoughts to the written word on my computer.

April 11, 2010
-I am thankful for my women friendships, and getting together with like minded supportive people.
-I love seeing my yard when it is all fresh and trimmed
-I am inspired by my weekend workshop on journal writing and hope
-I loved laughing on the phone with my girlfriend last night
-I feel some creative ideas around photography and writing taking shape

-I love the feeling of creativity when I go out to play with my camera.
-I love watching buds pop out and birds singing in the spring
-I just read that in order to age gracefully these days, we can’t rely on our old skills.
The most useful skills to us will be creativity and charm
-I love exploring new communities
-I may live in pain. I don’t like this much. But I do like that it has pushed me to evolve as a person and to be more creative.

Brian,

Thanks for such a great idea. It fits with a workshop that I took on the weekend. The instructor of the workshop said that research has shown that spending 10 minutes a day writing out what you feel thankful for can increase your wellbeing and level of hopefullness by huge amounts. She also said that people with Arthritis report having a 30% decrease in symptoms simply by doing this.

Even if I do not post them, I will do them daily. Thanks for such a great idea

I am very sorry to have not been on this site much in the past couple of months or so. I am having yet again another transition in my life.
My partner has left and has moved to Vancouver. I have been quite devastated and am busy redefining my life once again. I know I will be OK in the end and will get on with things.
Interestingly, our issues were not around my health. He has always been very supportive of me, and was a million percent there for me around my transplant. I expect that we will remain friends, although how that will evolve with a geographic distance remains to be seen.

Do we create our own reality? If so, I am uncertain why I have chosen the difficult path. In any case as has been said many times before on this site, having a positive attitude will be the only way to move on happily.

I have missed you all so much, and have thought of you often over the past few months. My life has changed so much in the past 5 years and my liver transplant was just a tiny part of it. I won’t go into everything here, as it just sounds like a soap opera. (Kelli maybe I can make a screen play with your Dad…LOL) I coped as I went along, but this summer I kind of crashed.

I needed time to lick my wounds and heal and rebuild for myself., which I have done and feel much better, although I continue to work on things. I have been so lucky that I have had the support of so many good friends.

This fall I have myself too busy really (overwhelmingly so, so that I don’t have time to be thinking of the past) 2spanish classes with lots of homework, a writing class, a class on mindfulness and pursuing happiness bases on some of the neurobiology principles (neurons that fire together, wire together)

My biggest news is that I have just 10 days ago adopted a 8 yr old chocolate lab, who was a stray, had not been well treated, was hit by a car and nearly died and then left in the SPCA. He was on the front of our local paper. In spite of his sketchy past, he is a lovely boy. His name is Hershey, and he is settling in nicely with me. We go for nice long walks to hear him from his injuries. I think we are going to be great companions.

Because I still have a lot of course work, I probably won’t be able to post as much as I would like to, but as soon as I have time I want to catch up with all of you.

Much Love Hershey Mama….aka Diane

Hershey still looks quite depressed in this photo as he had been passed from pillar to post and was maltreated. But now he looks like a fun and happy guy

Diane,

It is so good to hear from you and Hershey. He looks fine, I had a choc. Lab named Hershey once upon a time. He made me laugh. He was as clumsy as me when he got in a hurry, his feet would get tangled on each other.

I've been away from here too. I have kept Jeremy's/Kristin's son, Gabe all but twelve days, this summer. Except June, I was flat on my back looking at dust bunnies on the ceiling fan because it was out from keeping up with a three year old. I'm 50 years older than him!!! Soap opera!

I've been missing you and hope we have more time to be here from now on.

Diane,
I haven't been posting much lately either with my dad going through his heart problems and my bro here visiting & celebrating his 30th b-day. He thinks he's old now. Dumb! I'll be posting photos soon (as if I don't have enough posted already!) I've missed you!!! You really should communicate with my dad about writing projects! He just finished a rough draft of a new novel and is busy revising. It's going to be fantastic, not esoteric or written in the first person like Not So Brave. Say hi to Hershey & scratch behind his ears for me! TTYS. Love & hugs!! Kelli

Diane:

It's so good to hear from you! I have been very busy too! Life after transplant is a whirlwind, but I love every minute of it. I keep getting myself into all these projects and volunteer things. Crazy, but I am having fun!!

I LOVE Hershey!!! We just adopted a stray Lhasa Apso (Moe). I posted his picture in another thread. Wow! Those doggie's take up a lot of time at first. Moe has only been with us for about 2 weeks now. He is still a little depressed too, but he has his playful moments. He loves me for some reason and follows me all over. It hasn't taken me too long to fall in love with him either. LOL!!

I am glad to hear that you are busy and enjoying your new journey. I am so glad that Hershey will be a good companion for you.

Please keep posting when you have a little time. We want to keep up with all your comings and goings!

God Bless!

Hello to everyone, and special hello to DAP, Kelli, Kate and Karen

I have been very remiss about posting lately. When things get a little challenging, I tend to pull back and try and sort it out and not burden my friends, even though I know you are all such tremendous supporters of so many on this site.

I think that the impact of my transplant, plus a pile up of big losses in my life, all caught up to me, and has made the last few months feel a little like I have been wallowing in mud, when I feel as though I "should" be feeling grateful and happy.

But I have been working hard, and have never lost sight of the fact that although I have had a lot on my plate, I have also been very blessed and I am getting through all of this as well.

Today is my 2nd anniversary. Hard to believe that 2 years has flown by already since the surreal transplant experience. Karen, your 1 year anniversary is coming up and it sounds like you have been very busy and having lots of fun.

I am doing really well as far as my Transplant goes, but I am having some challenges with pain from a car accident before my surgery. My new 4 legged boy will help keep me moving, and vice versa. He had been quite neglected and had been hit by a car. But he is one big mush ball of love and sweetness. He is a great companion. I have just had him 2 weeks as well, and yes initially they are a lot of work.

It's exciting that you have a new pup in your home too Karen. Moe looks like a real cutie. I am sure Sammy adores him.
.

Hi Diane, I just read your blog from start to your last post. Do we create our own reality? I do believe we are spiritual beings living a human experience. I was raised Catholic, so that is my foundation. Through the years I have come to the belief that there is no correct path to God there are just many different road to get to him/her. Do we choose the path that we are on or our own reality, I think every decision we make leads one way or another, and the people we choose to have in our lives help us on that journey and present us with an alternative way of seeing the world around us, so they become part of us in both heart and mind be it good or bad.But do we choose before we come to our birth who can be in our lives so that we can learn lesson from these people, places and things and visa versa. Not that I am a holy person by any since of the word holy, however prayer has been a steady diet in my life. It has been the one thing that has carried me through many dark places through opening myself up being truly as honest as I can with God and trying to listen in silence and connecting. Now maybe it is my Catholic background but the Blessed Mother has been in my heart since I can recall my earliest memories and my angel. I know I am babbling here however I have to say every time I have prayed something has changed. I have prayed for example when I have been really angry at someone and said please make them understand and change and in the end I am the one who has changed and understood them. Kind of funny when you think about it. Prayer opens one heart to be open and change oneself to make us see beauty in the world around us by respect and see that every living thing on this planet has some journey. I have always loved the native american's culture and their love of nature, I look at nature and they respected everything and had a understanding of the beauty and respect for all things, the Amish I feel the same way about. When I was young my dad would look at an a bird or a bunny and say that is so and so aunt or uncle who died they came by today to say hello. I guess my answer to your question do we make our own journey, I would have to say I think we create our own lessons of what we choose to learn during our time here by what we fill our lives with and I think every choice we make has a ramification both good and bad for the others and ourselves. We are all interconnected, how we choose to live our lives when we are here effects many. I love you blog, I love your pictures, I am sad that you are not with your partner, I wish I could take that pain away from you. love loss hurts so much because a part of us in living in someone else, it is both the beauty and the pain of fully giving ourselves in love. Your beauty lives in him because of love. Your quote is beautiful, I do not think you light will ever go out because your flame glows in all of us. Thank you for your blog and sharing--I will pass the you in your flame along to others now because you have lit the flame in me. Wishing you the best. Rita

Hi Rita,
I have just read your post twice, and it is so heartfelt that it has made me cry. Thank you so much for your wise words and your support. I loved your words, and your descriptions of the native american culture and also your description of all being interconnected.

I did not grow up in a religious family, but as far back as I can remember I have felt a very strong presence of a greater power which I call God. I have followed a spiritual path, not a formally religious path. I think my family did and continue to think this is a little odd, but I have very strong faith.

I pray as well, and I do totally get your lovely words about prayer opening ones heart and helping us to see the beauty around us. I pray regularly. When I am totally overwhelmed, sad or angry, and lay in my bed and pray and turn my problems over to God, I feel a sense of huge connection and relief.

I have thought a lot about my own question around whether we create our own reality. I am not sure if we choose our difficult paths before we come here to learn specific lessons. Maybe? Just don't know that. I truly do not believe that our energy creates a huge outside influence such as a car accident or being in a flood or earth quake.

The part of our reality that I feel we totally own are our choices when difficult things happen to us. After a traumatic event, I have come to the conclusion that some of the decisions we make in life may come from a wounded place, not our strong place. Perhaps if we had not just been through something very hard, and now being in a very vulnerable place,we might have made a different decision. This has helped me forgive myself for making decisions in the past that were perhaps not in my best interest. It has also helped me deal with the perceived judgement of others, as I believe that if they walked in my shoes at the time they too might have made a different life decision.

It has also helped me realize my responsibility during difficult times. Even if everything else is taken away from me, I still always have the ability to choose how I will handle things. There are times in life for most of us that are difficult and lonely. I am choosing to align myself with love and joy and move forward in my life.

I believe that the love of my friends and especially the people on this forum have helped me make this choice.

Rita, you are a beautiful person, and I am in tears again as I read your lovely words. You have started my day in a place of love and gratitude.

Much Love

Diane

Absolutely Rita. It's good that we don't all have our rough patches at the same time. It is wonderful that we have such caring friends to reach out to in difficult times, and also to share the joys as well.

Thanks for sharing a part of your big heart. It was so appreciated.
