Watched the new show on ABC last night - the first thing they started out with was 2 ladies getting a single lung transplant and another patient getting a heart transplant - all from the same donor - very graphic and honestly depicted - real Doctors and patients. Both ladies came out doing very well. Pretty interesting series.

Loved the show!! I agree in that it was very realistic and showed the successes and failures in the medical field. I of course was especially interested in the two lung transplants!

Well I thought the show seemed to be pretty good for one that tried to show the process in their time frame, my one criticism would be showing the lung recipients leaving the hospital as if it was an out patient surgery, don’t think anyone gets out quite that quickly . . . (forgive me, I recorded it and finally watched it the other night).

When this aired I was in Cleveland being evaluated. Today is the first time I have been able to see it. As for the time frame the police officer was in the hospital for 8 days, I had the impression of the transplant ladies were there longer. FANTASTIC SHOW!!! Thank You Jay, I thought I had missed out on it.

Hey Jack! How long were you in? I have cystic fibrosis -- my FEV1/FVC was around 10% when I went in after a wait of almost 3 years... I was out of the hospital in 6 days. And in 10 years, I've never been back... That wasn't completely abnormal 10 years ago -- the average stay back then was only 8 days... With the new Lung Allocation Scoring system, hospital stays have actually gone up... With the new LAS system, in the grand scheme of things, sicker people are being transplanted and recovery takes longer. Back before the LAS system, many of those sicker people died before transplant... Love, Steve

Hi Steve, I was in about a month I guess, 1 week in ICU, then 2 1/2 weeks in a private room. I know the recovery time is much shorter now, especially with the 'two cut' method as opposed to the older style 'clamshell' I had. 6 days seems a short stay, especially for 10 years ago - did you need to have isolation at home or were you out & about then? The folks I've spoken with that have the shorter stays were more or less isolated at home as opposed to remaining in the hospital - when I got out, I rested a day or so but was pretty much through the isolation period. Stay well, Jack

Hey Jack!!! Actually -- what I'm getting at is that recovery times are LONGER now -- hospital stays and recover times are longer because patients tend to be sicker at the time of transplant... LAS assures that the sickest patients are transplanted the quickest (factoring in the likelihood of survival)... That wasn't the case before May 2005, when the "time served" protocol was used... Too many people weren't suriving to transplant -- so the group being transplanted were, on average, healthier because the sickest sometimes didn't make it... The new system is working as it was hoped it would... Nope -- I didn't have isolation at home... I had the vent out 12 hours after my surgery -- I was never even conscious with the vent in -- they brought me out as they were removing it... I was out of ICU in two days, but that was only because they couldn't locate a room on the transplant floor after one day... When I got home -- I wore a mask when I stepped out of the house... But we were walking in the courtyard of our building the following day... I walked 1/2 miles to Starbucks two days later... We doubled our walking distance every day for 2-3 weeks -- walking outdoors, around downtown Chicago where we live... So nope -- no "isolation"... Love, Steve
