I would like to continue forward on my journey of trying to gain weight. I think it is good to set a goal to work toward. I had been 84lbs. for around a year without much progress, but I have recently got up to 88lbs. due to an increase in rate of g-tube feedings at night. This gives me hope that I can accomplish the stated goal in the three month period. I would love to gain much more (at about 120 lbs. was my best weight when I was at my healthiest), but it is probably best to start out small and gradually build up. As I gain I hope that some of it will also be muscle as I lost a lot of muscle mass from my weight loss. (I once got down to somewhere in the 60s and am so thankful that I am not there today), and I already know that I have osteoporosis, so exercise will be important in this process. Just wish me luck that I can find the right balance between keeping strong and still gaining weight too. Thank you all so much for your support in other matters and for this. Rise', thank you for inspiring everyone to achievement. You truly are a great treasure to be cherished. Best of wishes to all.

Hi Bobbiejo,

I will be thinking and visualizing your dream to come true and from there, you can set a new goal. :-) one needs to remind themselves that they can do it. Start to see yourself weighing your dream number weight.

I had somewhat of a rough time the weekend before this one, health wise. Then this week I had an unusual amount of energy, relative to my usual, and went out somewhere almost every day with my father, but trying to go places so as to stay out of the heat. I have gained a pound so that I am now 89 lbs.! One step closer to the goal! It would be very nice if more energy came with every gain of a pound. I think though I have overtired myself a little though, so I am going to rest a little this weekend, but I hope this past week is a good sign. I am still trying to figure out why I have been gaining the few pounds (up from 84 lbs. I had been for about a year of struggling to gain even with g-tube feedings at night) I have recently as not much has changed, but something must be escaping me, so I shall try to find it. I also found out the results of my Dexa bone scan indicating now that I definitely have osteoporosis in my hips and spine and osteopenia in my femur which is worse than my 2008 scan and thus reinforcing how important exercise will be in my overall plan of gaining weight as I need to help my bones keep as strong as possible through good exercise. It all comes down to finding the right balance of exercise and proper nutrition, I suppose. Thanks for all the support.

I for some reason got back down to 87 lbs. but have gotten back to 88lbs. and have been there for several days. I am hoping that I can get back up to 89lbs. and beyond. I am trying to figure out what foods work best for me. Unfortunately, high-fattening foods tend to cause dumping syndrome. I also have to be careful volume wise due to this and my reflux problems which allows me to only take in a little at a time. I need to find a bone strengthening exercise that will be good for my bones but not too calorically draining. It has been too hot to walk outside. I am thinking about trying jump rope. Just the idea brings back good childhood memories.

Bobbiejo:

I am sorry that I haven't posted until now. I have been in a computer haze since all my computer problems started mid July.

Sometimes gaining weight is just as hard as losing weight. I always keep you in my prayers for good health. I think you are on the right track. Keep that goal in front of you and you will reach it.

I am trying egg white protein. I have trouble with whey and I don't want too much soy in my diet. I seem to have a lot more energy and it doesn't taste bad. It adds about 100 calories per serving to my daily diet. It think it is helping a lot in building muscle at least I am exercising with less muscle fatigue.

I will keep praying - now I will pray that you reach your ideal weight!

God Bless!

Dear Karen,
Thank you for your encouragement. How are you getting this egg white protein and how are you incorporating it into your diet? I am curious to see if it might help me. I appreciate you sharing. I hope life is treating you kindly.

Yes Karen, I want to know what you are taking too:-) so far, you have helped me by leading me to Biotics once again after several years.

I remember buying an egg white protein powder at whole foods market.

In the past, when i needed to gain weight, i bought egg whites sold separately and cooked them up and added them to a blender with fruit and nut butters

I should post my weight gain shake in the nutrition forum.

Bobbiejo and Rise:

I investigated different protein powders because I have such trouble with milk and whey products. That's one of the reason I liked Benecalorie so much is because it didn't have milk or corn syrup. I don't think it had any sugar - I can't remember. Benecalorie doesn't have much protein though, so I was looking for a supplement with more protein so that I could help my muscles.

I looked and looked. Finally, I came across egg white protein powder. I had been eating eggs and extra egg whites, but that gets really old and it takes time to cook them. Eggs for breakfast every morning was making me nauseous. When I came across egg white protein I was very interested. I read and read about it and it seemed like the perfect protein for me. No dairy, no soy, no sugar, etc. I ordered a small bag and so far it has agreed with me digestively. YEAH!!

I have noticed in the last few weeks that my legs get less fatigued and I have more energy. I was having trouble with my leg muscles burning when I did too many squats or heavy leg workouts. I am seeing some really good results so far. :-)

Here's what I am taking:

http://www.jayrobb.com/eggProtein.asp

I looked at a lot of egg white protein brands and just felt more comfortable with this one. I have even seen it in the Nutrition Stores like Whole Foods. Our local grocery store chain (Kroger) carries this brand as well, so I felt comfortable that it was a decent quality. After trying it I really like it. I take the vanilla since I am allergic to chocolate, but I bet the chocolate is the best. The vanilla is not bad. You could add fruit to it or put it in things like pudding or yogurt. I don't know about putting it in hot things. I just stick with shakes.

I have been okay'd to take this by my transplant team, but as always I would check with your docs.

I hope this helps!!

God Bless!

Hi Karen

I have been taking Hemp Protein powder from Living Harvest. There is no sugar added just hem protein. I mix one teaspoon full with apple sauce before I workout.

I am going to pick up Jay Robb protein powder again because if you say it is good it must be good. I once bought his product several years ago. I cannot remember what it was but I did not buy it again. I could have forgotten because I started to make my own egg whites from scratch and then added them to my mix of fruit and nut butters.

My recipe really did the trick and I gained lots of weight.

Thank you for always sharing what works for you.

Dear Rise and Karen,
Thank you so much for sharing some of your weight-gaining strategies with me. I shall have to further investigate them.

I am back down to 87 lbs., but I think this may due to the fact that it has been harder to eat lately because of an increase in acid reflux symptoms resulting from a change in my PPI due to insurance not wanting to pay for Nexium. I was first put on a generic of Prevacid, Lansoprazole, which did not work as well, and now I am on the generic of Prilosec, Omesoprazole. It has not been working as well either yet, but I am going to try it for a little longer and hope my system just needs time to adjust. Besides, I figure if I do not give it more time, the insurance would probably be more likely to not be convinced to cover the Nexium as the only one most effective for me.

I continue to remain volume sensitive and have some difficulty in keeping down foods although I keep trying to eat all through out the day even if I am not hungry. I am fortunate in having the g-tube feedings as a backup at the moment. I hope that as the weather becomes more like that of fall, I might be able to get outside more to walk and gain strength. I wish everyone the best in their own efforts to accomplish their goals, and thank all who are supporting me.

Unfortunately, I have not made much progress on my goals. In fact, I am going backwards. I have been having an unusual trouble with acid reflux that has been much worse than it has been in a long time. Usually a PPI keeps the acid part well under control, but now I have been waking up mornings with the acid building up such that I have to stop my g-tube feedings, drain, and try again only for the acid to build up more. My weight is now 84 lbs. My doctor had me increase my dose of Omeprazole 40mg to three times from twice without success. Now I am taking Carafate and may have my PPI changed to Protonix. I am afraid it may be the Candida infection of the esophagus as I am experiencing similar symptoms to when I had it before. I had been fortunate in that the Nystatin I have been taking twice daily had been keeping the infection away, but now I am not sure. The doctors cannot get me in to have an endoscopy until the 29th of this month, and only that will let us know if it is the Candida or not. I just hope I can make it without losing more weight. As always I appreciate your support and encouragement, and I hope everyone else is having more success in achieving their goals. Best of wishes and many hugs.

Oh, Bobbiejo, if only I could give you about 25 pounds! What a wonderful world this would be. As hard as it is for you to gain weight, it's that hard for me to lose. My feelings go out to you, as I personally know how difficult it is. I'm sorry about your reflux and how bad it's making you feel. Let's hope the docs have some good solid solution for you so that you can be comfortable. Keep the faith, Bobbiejo, and you will get through 'till they can do that scope and find out what's really going on. You'll certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Bobbiejo,

I am so sorry you are having so many problems. You are such a wonderful person, always giving to others, I wish I could take this all away for you. I will say lots of prayers that the doctors can solve this problem, and that you will gain some weight.

Bobbiejo,

I just had a thought. Do you use Nystatin swish and swallow? My center has had me using it four times per day since my transplant even though I have no signs of candida/thrush. They are probably overly cautious with me as I am a heart/liver. I was sitting watching TV just now and wondered if you were on this or if this is something you can ask your center about.

I really want you to be better and to gain some weight.

Hugs,
Meagan

Thank you Meagan and Sally for your prayers and kind support. It truly means a great deal to me.

Thank you for mentioning the Nystatin, Meagan. I have actually already been taking it, twice a day as a preventative ever since I had a time where I kept getting infections of Candida in the esophagus. It seemed to have been working quite well until now, but then again I can not be sure it is the Candida or not. I am still taking it and also taking Carafate, and the doctor is shipping me some Protonix samples to try instead of the Omeprazole until I have my endoscopy which is now officially scheduled for October 27th.

You all remain in my thoughts and prayers too. May you be blessed in being so kind to me. Many hugs.

BobbieJo:

Oh dear! I wish I could help you. I do know what it is like not being able to eat enough food to gain weight. Remember I was there pre-transplant. Have you ever looked at some of the other Nestle Nutrition products other than the Benecalorie. I actually called Nestle and they sent me several products to try free of charge. Here's their website http://www.nestlenutritionstore.com/. They have products targeted to specific problems. You should check it out.

I am so sorry to hear that you might have candidia again. I hope that the EGD will help them determine why you are having so much trouble.

You are always in my prayers!

God Bless!

Have you thought about seeing an ENT doctor about your condition for another opinion?

I am a bit worried to hear this news. Please continue to update us.

Thank you everyone for your concern. It helps to know I have your support.

LouLou, if a transplant of weight could take place, I would willing accept it. I have had lots of offers. It would be so nice if it were that easy. I need about thirty pounds to get to the highest weight I had when I was the healthiest.

Karen, thank you for letting me know about Nestle. I shall have to investigate further.

Risa, if the endoscopy does not show anything, and I am still having this problem, I will look into possibly getting the opinion of an ENT as I cannot continue to lose weight due to the acid. Yesterday I started the Protonix that my doctor shipped to me in samples to see if that might work better than the Omeprazole. I will be taking it three times a day. It did not help this morning, but it may need more time to get into my system.

Thank you for always uplifting me such that just to think of this group brings a smile to my face. May you each find new reasons to smile and hope each day just as you often are my reason or reasons. Many, many hugs.

Just curious

Are you taking in lots of calories? do you think it is possible that the tube feedings were not agreeing with you causing you this acid build up? Can you switch brands to see if that will work.

Whenever I have had trouble in the past, I would look at any new medications or vitamins that I was taking, different foods or foods or medications that I would be taking in the largest quantity and that was my plan to remove and test.

Sure enough this method works for me in helping to eliminate the culprit. Today I know and practice energy testing which is a big help. If I test weak to a medication, I can clear the negative sensitivity and then the medication works without the side effects. I know this sounds strange to folks who have no knowledge of this but this is a proven method in holistic medicine.

When there is acid in the body, some drugs might work temporarily but it is diet in my opinion that really helps the body maintain good health. Avoiding sugary foods and eating more green foods is important. There are many good books on this topic.

Sending you positive and healing thoughts so your body can heal quickly.

Dear Rise,

Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I do not think it is the formula of g-tube feeding causing a problem as I have been on it for a long time before this without any problems. My system actually accepted this formula a little better than the older formula for although they provided the same amount of calories, the one I receive now has a lower percentage of fats which can in too great numbers upset my stomach by slowing it or do the reverse and go straight through me or may cause some diarrhea. This is what makes everything so difficult because I have to limit my diet both to things that do not aggravate GERD or gastroparesis (a delay in stomach emptying) or do not initiate a dumping syndrome or diarrhea(which I have had more of a tendency toward since the transplant). Thus I have to be careful with fats and fiber. I also have to be careful in that I have to eat small things throughout the day as if I eat too much at one meal, I deal with dumping syndrome, reflux, and/or sometimes vomiting. I have tried to look at my diet, and it has mostly stayed about the same during this period. I had been doing quite well and gaining weight with the g-tube feedings which is what makes this situation more frustrating.

Do you think that energy testing might still be helpful in my case? I do not really have any experience in it.

Your compassion and everything else you do is greatly appreciated by me. I hope that you are having a good weekend. Many, many hugs.

You are very welcome Bobbie Jo

If you ever wanted to consider learning energy testing, I would suggest you look for a practitioner but many of these people will want to sell you vitamins etc... Many of them love probiotics for acidic environments and you mentioned your doctor said no.

As a patient with Cystic Fibrosis, I know the value in probiotics and pancreatic enzymes that help people with digestive problems. They help to break down the food by aiding the body with the enzymes it needs to help properly digest and absorb your food. Many cf patients gain weight after going on the right enzyme.

Did they ever test your enzyme level? Have you had your stool tested for fat absorption?

love and hugs right back to you
