Hello! My name is Amanda and my stepfather had a heart transplant yesterday. They were unable to take him off the bypass machine after the surgery and since the transplant has gone back to the OR twice because of bleeding in his chest. He has had over 20 units of blood and they still can not get his blood pressure stable. They were fairly confident they found and fixed te bleed but it has been 5 hours and one minute his pressure is good, the next its not. Does anyone know of a similar experience? We are at a loss, not getting very much info form Dr.'s and found very little on the internet. Basically is any of this common, has anyone had this or heard of this and made it. I am looking for any information at this point. Thank you! |

Amanda - first off prayers for your love one during these hard times. Not a doctor - sometimes these thing do arise and hopefully you have a team that can stay on top of things - that's a great thing, otherwise the out come may not be favorable. I myself was under for about 14 hours - lots of things to take care of for me - which hospital is doing his transplant? Keep your chin up Amanda - sometimes there are a lot of problems and hopefully his can be worked out. Keep us posted. TTFN-GB Tom

Amanda, prayers already for your Stepdad and all of your family to get through this rough time. Not a Dr. also, but I have known people to make a full recovery after Drs told us, "we have done all we can do." None of them were Transplanted, but all of them were gravely ill. God will carry all of you in his strength to get past this. We will Keep praying for his speedy recovery also. I'm so glad to meet you, and welcome you to TransplantBuddies. Looking forward to seeing Your Stepdad post here soon too Love, Kate

My thoughts are with you and your family Amanda. I hope that today, things have stabilized. Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going. It does happen sometimes that the first few days are chaos and frightening, but as Kate has said, some people will still pull through. Thinking of you Amanda.

Thank you all! He is doing a little better. Stable vitals no blood needed today and color is much better. The ICU nurse told my mom they were shocked he made it through the night and are more optomistic. Not great but moving in the right direction. |

That's fantastic - I have found that God works at his speed and not our's - helps keep perspective when times get tough. So glad he's coming along - keep us posted please.

Keep the faith, Amanda. I can't speak to your step-dad's surgical complications, but I can tell you that we all followed different transplant roads after our surgeries. In my case, I woke up feeling really good, but my doctors were concerned that my new heart was taking a while to completely "wake-up". I remember asking them (through tears) if this meant I was going to lose my wonderful gift, and assuring them that even though my numbers weren't looking great, I actually felt so much better than I had prior to transplant that I would do just fine, even if things didn't improve. The good news is, I'm now over three years out, and doing really well. I hope your step-dad continues to improve. It's a hard time for all, and I know my husband really felt frustrated that he couldn't do anything to help, but just knowing that he was by my side made a huge difference to me. I'm sure your step-dad feels your love and concern. Hang in there! All the best, Deb
