After a nearly 3 year wait, I got my liver transplant 8/7/2013. Discharged from Northwestern Memorial Hospital last Sunday afternoon and transferred to nearby Suites hotel. If I pass final ultrasound and bloodwork on Monday, they will let me return to my home in the southwest suburbs about 20 miles from downtown. I will have 3 labs per week at my local Quest Diagnostics. I am on 4 mg Prograf in am and pm and 20 mg of prednisone . I was on prednisone pre transplant as it was only drug that kept my enzymes near double normal. I had Cryptogenic giant cell hepatitis. My meld was mired in the teens due to low creatinine until my liver lesion suddenly grew over 2.1 cm in mid June. Got exception points to 22. I think my blood type B and body size 5 foot 10 inches tall and 200 lbs. worked in my favor for 2 offers. The July attempt was aborted when donor liver found to have plaque build up. August offer was brain dead donor, accident victim. I am so thankful to the donor / donor family for giving me another chance at life at age 52. |

Congratulations on receiving your new liver transplant! I am glad to hear that you are doing well enough to be out of the hospital. I hope your next bloodwork and ultrasound results will allow you to go fully home. I got a liver as part of a multivisceral transplant a little over seven and a half years ago. I hope that you will be able to celebrate this blessing for a long, long time. I am grateful to be alive such that I can learn of others like you being gifted with this second chance at life. Many hugs and best of wishes.

Susie, Congratulations to you!!! So very happy to hear you have received the "Gift of Life" once again. I will be two years post Transplant tomorrow. I am enjoying each day as a precious gift. My latest labs, 3 weeks ago, were very good, about normal for anyone! I think often, about my Donor Family, and the loss of their son, unexpectedly. I wish you all the very best, and enjoy your new life! Hugs!

That is great news, I had my transplant at Northwestern almost six years ago. Do you know who will be your post-transplant physician? Mine is Dr Levitsky and I really like him.
