Hello, my name is Donna and I just had my One Year Post Transplant workup and my heart is doing great. I was 48 yrs old at the time of transplant. I live in Huntsville, AL and had my transplant at UAB in Birmingham, AL. I did have lots of rejection until around 8 weeks out, but I am staying at a 1R now. I am having lots of problems with weight gain, just like"hawaz" is having. I started off on 30 mg of prednisone and am now down to 6.5 mg, but I am just as heavy as I was while taking 30 mg. I am still short of breath alot which could be just part of not exercising much. I have lots of problems with spinal stenosis, so it is very hard for me to exercise. I am starting tonight with water aerobics, so hoping that will help some. Also, I have a "paralyzed diaphragm" which occurred during my transplant surgery, so I'm sure that doesn't help either. Anyway, I am glad to meet everyone and hope to be a help/supporter to this forum. |

Welcome Donna and congratulations on your first year (it is often the hardest). Weight seems to be a big (no pun intended) problem post transplant with the high doses of prednisone, I'm just past the 6 year mark now for my lungs and the doc (finally) lowered my prednisone to 5 mg one day 2.5 mg the next. Good luck with the water aerobics, down Huntsville way you can almost do it year round outside (I have a good friend down there). Stay well . . .

Welcome to the forum, Donna! It's wonderful to hear that your heart is doing well after your first year. I agree with Jack that it seems as though the very first year is the most difficult as one is adjusting to the new medication and recovering from the surgery itself. I am afraid that I have the opposite problem in regards to weight. It is a shame I could not take some of what you do not want as I am much underweight. At any rate, it is hard to be at either end in regards to weight, so I feel for you. I hope that with time it may get easier for you. This was the case for me in many of my problems that I experienced immediately or very soon after my transplant surgery. May the water aerobics prove fun and helpful. Best of wishes and many hugs.
