I would like to know if any other kidney transplant caregivers have dealt with their "patient" (in this case my boyfriend/husband) being hostile or agitated at you. There has been a big personality change and he is shutting me out. He thinks he can deal with everything on his own, but isn't doing a great job. He talks about wanting to go out and live life as if I have been the one keeping him down the last 5 years while he is was on dialysis. He is 4 months post transplant and we have never had these issues. I need some advice. I know some of this is normal, but I am pretty emotional myself.

The immunosuppressive drugs that we have to take after getting our transplant affect each of us differently. Your best approach is to get him to see a psychiatrist to see what the meds may be doing to him. If he won't go, then you have to go see a psychiatrist or marriage counselor to see what your options are. If you do a google search on psychiatric aspects of organ transplantation you will find the changes that you describe are possible due to the transplant and immunosuppressive meds.
I'm sorry for your difficulties and hope you are able to get him some help.

Sounds like steroid induced moodiness. Call the nurse let her know and ask them to speak with him about the side effects so that he will be more conscious of them. Hang in there.

Hi worn out

Remember, he might have psychological issues but do not tolerate any abuse.

I hope he treats you with respect. Perhaps give him the space he needs.

If he is not taking his medications, you need to contact his transplant team but I would not do this behind his back. I would have a calm discussion with him and see what happens.

I agree with nish - check with the doctors on prednisone. It can really have an impact on mood.
I remember one husband and wife that we know talked about the prednisone and their "code word". Whenever he would start getting agitated or crabby, the family would simply say "prednisone" as a hint to him to be mindful of what was going on. She laughed and said they had quite a few instances where they were hollering out "prednisone! prednisone! prednisone!".
I sympathize with you and hope they are able to get things in order.

I can give you a perspective from someone who has just started taking these medication after the kidney transplant., 3rd Jan of this year onwards.
After getting discharged from the hospital, I had arguments and heated discussion with pretty much everyone around me. They were not violent but very out of character for our entire family. I was on 20mg wysolone (prednisone) a day, and I was lucky that we all realized very soon that this medication can possibly cause mood swings and very strong reaction.
The doctor also pointed this out to us and suggested that we keep off from discussing hot topics :-) till I get used to this medication a little bit. He was right - we had to consciously try this and it has been two months now, and things are lot better.
In India, you are recommended to not mingle with lot of people or allow lot of guests at home for some time because of fear of infection. This was a blessing a disguise and it helped me cope with this situation.

I hope things are better now.
Thanks,
Rajiv
