I just had to share this. I was attending a Georgia Transplant Foundation benefit last night and met a patient who had her SINGLE lung tx 20 years ago!!!! She looked awesome and was full of energy. I wish I could remember her name. I was so inspired by her that I had to share it with you all, also. IT IS POSSIBLE!!!

Of course it's possible! I had a heart transplant back in 1985 at Harefield Hospital, Middlesex, UK. And since then i have had my appendix removed circa 1989, and a Kidney transplant in 2006, and i am still doing great. I achieved black belt in karate, have fought as a kickboxer, weight trained off and on for 10 yrs, worked as a bouncer (still do), and generally just try to lead an average healthy lifestyle.

I heard the longest surviving heart transplant is 31 years (dies of cancer) and i intend by all means to smash that record ha.

Trust me, get on with your life and what will be will be. In today's medical world if you and your doctors both do your part in remaining healthy, your organs should last throughout.

Davester,
One of my dearest friends Andrew Wilson rec'd his "Domino" heart transplant at Harefield back during the time of yours. His transplant surgeon was Prof Sir Magdi Yacoub. http://www.transplantsunited.com/

Two more British pals of mine also rec'd their heart transplants at Harefield. http://www.micky-byrne.co.uk/ (Micky is a Martial Arts fan) and http://www.heart-transplant.co.uk/

I dedicate this pic to you..............

Yes, I had the honor of speaking to the longest living heart transplant recipient Tony Huesman prior to his death in 2009.

Cheers, mate

Bob:

I missed your Birthday too! I am so sorry. I have been so busy with Sammy this summer that I am missing some important dates here on Transplant Buddies. Happy Belated 70th birthday!! That is soooo awesome!!

Jo:

Wow! That is so cool that you met a 20 year lung transplant survivor. It does give me such great hope. I am going for a record too!! I want to see my son graduate from college. He is 6 now so I have to be around at least 18-19 years, so I might as well just make it 20+ years. I would love to see him get married. Positve thoughts, good nutrition, exercise and the grace of the good Lord!!

God Bless!
Karen

Happy2BHere:

Yeah that's the one, Harefield Hospital's very own Sir Magdi Yacoub. He operated on myself back in '85 - exactly a week before he operated on an Italian girl called Nicoletta whom i lost contact with years ago.
Sir Magdi is a definitely one of the all time greats in the Cardiac Transplant field - he even bought me a He-Man Action Man set because i was an awkward young 7 yr old patient at the time! ha.

I will take a look at those links to see if i recognise anyone - i actually live in Newcastle upon Tyne, around 280 miles away from Harefield so very rarely hear of things down there now.

KarenR: Absolutely no reason why you cannot. Positive thoughts all the way.

I've got to say that this is the first time since my transplant that i've ever openly discussed my transplant with others - even when i got to the local hospital for routines (Freeman Hospital, Newcastle) i don't bother to chat about stuff as i've always had the attitude of just getting on with it and not seeing myself as different to others - not that either attitude is right or wrong.
