I am two and a half years post double lung transplant due to CF. My husband and I have been talking about either fostering a child or adopting one since everything seems to be okay with my health. Has anyone else done this? What has your experience been? I am quite worried about the health portion of their evaluation! |

Thank you, Hostess Risé. I am finally feeling great after a long recovery with a bunch of complications. The only outstanding issues are significant kidney problems (due to surgery and/or rejection meds) which continues to resolve itself and anemia, requiring occasional Procrit shots...oh and don't forget those CF sinuses - they are old friends so I can forget about their issues because I am so used to them! Otherwise, I finally hit my "normal" FEV1 at 91% and FVC at 84% about 9 months ago. It was amazing to finally see "within normal limits" on my pulmonary function report! It would be wonderful to connect with someone who has fostered/adopted a child. There are a lot of things that we are worried about - the actual process as well as managing your own health around a child (e.g. Vaccinations). And the question that plays in my mind...is it fair to adopt a child not knowing my own future? Then I answer myself - "any parent could be hit by a bus and die at any point" what do you all think?

Hi Kim You are Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your photo. I am glad that you are doing well Knowing what I know today- if I could go back in time would I want to have a child if I could? This is a very personal decision and I probably would not consider it. I have always looked after my CF as if it was a child I had to care for and I must say I was a good Mom to my CF. Now that I am able to live life without CF I tend to feel more carefree and enjoy my life the way it is. I would start with your doctors and ask them have they had any patients who adopted post transplant? I knew of one young lady with cF who went to Russia to adopt a baby. She became very sick a few years later. You have so much to consider. If a complication became present in your life, how would the stress affect you and your family? Do you have a sister and Mother who could help you? Besides having CF and a transplanted organ to concern yourself, look at your entire life and see where a newborn will fit in. Will you be able to take care of yourself in the best way possible? I wish I could have been a better help to you. If I know someone who adopted a child, I will be sure to tell them to write to you. Take care of yourself!
