I had a liver transplant on 12th September, 2009 (5 months ago today) at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia. I am doing very well, although I now have Osteoporosis and have 2 fractured vertebrae which has caused me a lot of pain in the last 2 months. My doctor tells me that they are stress fractures caused by reduced bone density.
They were going to give me a bone infusion at the time that I was re-admitted to hospital because some blood had accumulated in the area near where my enlarged spleen had been, removed during the transplant operation(4 weeks earlier). They cut me open again and removed a litre or two of clotted blood and the infusion didn't go ahead as the recovery from this second operation was much harder to deal with than the transplant itself had been. Has anyone else had a similar experience with either the spleen problem or the Osteoporosis complication?picture

Hi to all my transplant Buddies. My name is Rick. I had Kidney donor surgery in Kingston, Ontario, Canada Nov. 2006. for my identical twin brother. I woke up from surgery to find my wife and brother standing beside my bed and found out they could not take my kidney. I was heart broken. I felt as though I failed and let him down. Three months later I was back to work and my brother got a kidney in June 2007. He is doing OK now. Then in the fall of 2007 I was told I had PSC. I got as yellow as a banana and itchy as crap for about a year. May 9th 2008 I got my first liver transplant at Toronto General. Home in 4 days. Then the liver failed (DVT, blood clot in main vein) and I was back in the hospital and received my second transplant on july 14th. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks before and 4 weeks after the second transplant. Not good at all. I was 168lbs before my first transplant and after my second one I was down to 117lbs. Back up to 165lbs now. A lot of complications from the antirejection drugs that did not happen after the first transplant. I'm doing pretty good now but still have a lot of side effects. I thank both my donors every day.,Me before my first transplant}

Hi Rick,

No worries about the honking big picture... lol. I resized it for you.

I just wanted to say hi and welcome. I am a fellow Canadian. I had my heart and liver transplant at Toronto General Hospital as well and we have gone to Kingston many times - love the boat cruise amongst the Thousand Islands.

I am so sorry you have had such a rough time with your transplants. I hope everything is totally straightened out very soon.

Take care eh!

Hi Rick,

Welcome to this site from me as well. I also had a liver Transplant in Nov 2008 due to a viral infection. I am so sorry to hear that you have had such a difficult time.

What kind of issues are you having now Rick? I know what it is like when people tell you look great, but you are not feeling that way. Sometimes it's hard to know what to say.

I have found that often if I have a problem or a drug side effect, that someone on this forum has also experienced it and that sharing is really helpful.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Thanks Rise' and Diane.
I just got back Tuesday from visiting Rene' in NY (I'm in Ca.) -- This is the first time I've seen him since his MELD went up in March...He's pretty swollen from all the edema. He was "tapped' when I was there, and he's about to get drained again tomorrow.. He is listed for liver transplant with two transplant centers (Mt. Sinai) and Thomas Jefferson U.H. in Philadelphia...
On Monday he'll drive with his daughter to Philly to see the folks at that clinic... His MELD with that clinic is at 24, so we're hoping and being very optimistic that another call will come soon---taking it one day at a time--but I have to say this waiting is so trying..!!! (especially when we're 3,000 miles away)
Thanks for all the thoughts!

I received my liver on July 24, 2010 at Methodist Central in Memphis Tn. (Hepatic cancer). a few minor complications, but so grateful to be here!
It took 9 months and three chemo-embolizations to shrink the tumors to the point where I could qualify to get on the list.

I'm waiting for a liver in Chicago. I'm listed at Loyola University Hospital. I've undergone 3 chemoembolization treatments and have a current MELD of 25. I've fought Hep C , which has given me advanced cirrohsis and liver cancer for over a decade. I was a "lab rat" for a number of Hep C, phase 2, clinical trials at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

I received the "Gift of life" Liver Transplant on 10/08/1997 @ The Thomas E. Starzyl Transplantation Institute - Presbyterian Hospital - UPMC by Dr. Casavilla and Dr. Fung who is now head of the Cleveland Clinic's Transplant Department and Co-developer of Prograf with Thomas E. Starzyl @ UPMC who is the father of Liver transplantation.

In the picture, I'm holding up a sign in front of the HHS secretary's office in Washington D. C.back in 1998 fighting for fairness in transplantation as the system used by UNOS was being upgraded to use the MELD score instead of the older status 1 thru 4 system which was the system used to determine my own status as a transplant recipient. Good trip to DC!!!

Respectfully,
Henry

P.S. these are Pre and post-transplant pics... The first one is a pre-transplant @ my sculpture studio in NYC... The second one is with my dear Mother who helped me get through my post-transplant recovery which took 4 months.
Liver Transplant 10/08/1997@UPMC's Thomas Starzyl Transplantation Institute.

Surgery performed by Dr. John Fung & Dr. Cassavilla who called me direct from Macchu Pichu in Peru one week after my surgery to check on me while he was on vacation!

That picture is of a group that went to protest in D.C. to fight for Fairness for Transplant Patients way back in 1998 in front of the secretary of HHS offices.
