Hi everyone, If a person has ascites before liver transplant would they still have it after or would a transplant eliminate the ascites? I'm am really curios to know because my mom currently has been dealing with ascites and has been told that she will need a transplant. I would hate for her to still have to go through having the ascites even after a liver transplant. Jenn |

I had ascites pre transplant and I don't have it now post transplant. I can only speak for myself. Post transplant, however I had severe fluid retention, mostly in my legs and feet. That finally subsided after about 6-8 weeks and it never returned. My transplant was Oct. 2009. |

Jenn, In most cases the answer is no. I continued with ascites after my transplants only because I had it for so long before and I guess my body had to "learn" that it wasn't necessary anymore, even though things like my albumin numbers were okay. Over the years, I had a record setting160 paracentesis procedures. If my ascites problem finally went away then it will do so for anyone else. Hugs! Kelli

I too had pre-transplant ascites and had it post transplant for about a month. I do retain fluid if I over do sodium intake. I can gain five pounds in one day, but I have learned what level of sodium I can tolerate and haven't had that happen but two or three times in the last year. Post transplant is truly a great place to be for me at least.

Thanks to eveyone who shared their experiences. Kelli, you are a very strong person. I can't believe you had to have the procedure so many times. My mom has only had it done 4 times and gets very upset each time and feels like giving up. It's a bit confusing for me to understand what causes ascites. Do people that have a transplant still need to keep a low sodium diet afterwards? Shouldn't having a new liver solve this problem? Jenn |

Hi Jenn, For some it does solve the problem, but I am not one of those. My liver is working great; however, I still have an issue with sodium. I do not add salt to anything. I avoid processed foods - canned soup, lunch meats, chips, etc. I thought it would be harder than it has been. I notice now how salty some foods really are when I am in a social setting and eat some foods I normally avoid - like pizza.

I developed ascites pre-transplant, and had over 20 paracentesis. Not nearly as many as Kelli. I figured they took out at least 26 gallons of fluid. My transplant surgeon said she took out 13 liters during the surgery. Post transplant I developed a CHYLE leak, and was NPO for a week. The leak finally dried up during that time. I am not having any ascites now, just some slight swelling in my lower legs. I still have to keep a watch on my sodium intake. I weigh 155lbs now, 142 lbs pre-transplant. BTW, How do I get my picture smaller, to thumbnail size?
