I know it's not recommended to get a tattoo if you have liver disease. I have autoimmune hep and a meld of 17 now. my health otherwise is good... ie active, etc. I am on the waiting list for a new liver, it's been 2 or 3 years now, meld has been about the same the entire time... 15-17. The autoimmune hep was diagnosed a long time ago and just never get well enough. I feel like I have just been "the same" forever and I actually wish I would just get sicker to actually start moving towards the chance at the transplant. I've always wanted a tattoo and I've heard the reasons not to... chance of bleeding and so on. Has anyone gotten a tattoo with liver disease and did it work out ok or not? I just feel like my life has been on hold forever, I've lost my 20's and 30's here.... and I know I shouldn't be bitter, etc... but I cant help being a little pissed about it. I just want to do something that I want to do without walking on eggshells and having to be "careful" about. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks to all at this site just for being here.

bob I spent 40 out of 45 years struggling with liver disease, and the last 8 were the worst. So, don't lose heart. Regarding tattoos, it all depends on your platelet counts, since bleeding is the most major factor. My counts pre-transplant were extremely low, so it wouldn't be too far fetched for me to presume that yours will be the same. However, you should confirm that with your liver docs, and should check with them before getting the tattoo. Personally, with the number of times I have been poked by needles before, during and after transplant, I would prefer not adding insult to injury with a tattoo.

You already know the answer to your question, why do you want to take the chance?. This may also tell your Drs. how willing will you be, after tx., to sacrifice your "wants" . You should know that after tx., to take care of your "new" organ, you will be walking on "eggshells" and being very "careful". I do hope this comment is not offensive to you or anyone else. In the end we all do what we want to do, but there are consequences. BTW your life is not on hold,... only your tx. Just hang in there, life will be much better after tx. Bob

Bob, I think the risk is more infection than bleeding. Honestly, I would live and do what you want to within reason. I would ask your doctor to give you an antibiotic and take them during the time the tattoo is healing. I hate to be brutally honest here and maybe bring you down, but I am going to speak harsh truth. Not everyone gets a transplant due to lack of organs. We don't know who will and won't. So, as long as you are not doing anything to insane (and getting a tattoo is not insane) then I would go tell your doc that you would like a prescrip and that this is your plan. It is going to be alot less likely that you will be able to get one post transplant.

To be honest, I have the same disease u do, and a year before I had my transplant, I got about 7 tattoos myself, never had any problem. I got yelled at by one dr, but I really didnt care cuz I thought I was going to die anyway cuz I was on no list, but even then, most of my drs never said anything.
