I have just returned from three days in the hospital. I walked in to the ER on Friday night with lower abdominal pains, a bad cough and fever. It took two days of research and tests on the part of my dedicated liver doctors to find the problem. Along with mild pnemonia, I have contracted something called corynebacterium, which was found in a urine culture. I have been on Levaquin for the lungs, and doxycycline for the bacterial infection. Do any of you know about this bacteria or the drug?

Good to hear you are better and that the doctors found the right drugs to treat it. Both the antibiotics they gave you are broad spectrum antibiotics, so they treat a lot of different things. Levaquin is a good drug, it is similar to cipro, if you've ever taken that. It is often used for bacterial respiratory infections (bronchitis or pneumonia), urinary infections (UTI, kidney, bladder), and skin (staph). My doc prescribes it to me as a prophylactic when I go for my annual dental cleaning/check-ups. Doxycycline is an antibiotic used for MRSA. Though it is also used for respiratory and UTIs. The 2 drugs seem to overlap but because the did a culture on the bacteria then I believe they are using the most effective drug for the bacterial infection. I have no idea what corynebacterium is. Though it says on the net it can affect different parts of the body, I guess depending on where it decided to reside. It seems to favor immuncompromised individuals like us though.

Google "CORYNEBACTERIUM" you'll get this and other info that may give you a clue as to how you got it. Get well...Bob http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corynebacterium

Thanks for all the info. I can kind of explain the pneumonia, but don't quite know where I contracted the bacteria. We are a "unique breed", though, so I guess nothing surprises our docs.
