Hey All, Bill is having some major issues with his kidneys now and the kidney Dr thinks it is from the Prograf usage. Anyone else have this problem? Bill had issues with his kidneys before the transplant but it's gotten pretty bad since then. His kidney's are functioning at about 30%. I'm hoping he will be taken off of the prograf and maybe given something else. He already takes the Myfortic but I know there are other drugs he should be able to take.

LindyB: Yes my kidneys tests are going downhill and they sent me to a kidney specialist about 3 months ago. He says it's the Meds I'm taking and doesn't seem to think I should be to worried about it. Besides the Prograf and other post transplant drugs I also take Fluconasol for Valley Fever that I picked up when my immune system was very weak and even though they say it does little kidney damage I did notice a big drop in EGR once I started it. I was around 49 EGR a year ago and now it is 45. I believe EGR is the same as percent of functioning. I feel fine other than maybe having to get up 3 or 4 times a night. Still every time I take a blood test and look at the EGR I worry that they will want to start some kind of Kidney treatment and I'm all treatmented out.

I am currently taking Prograf and Myfortic, but have been put on 5 mg of Lisinopril to protect my kidneys. So far, so good.

His Kidney Dr prescribed Sensipar which is supposed to help decrease the amount of calcium that is leaching from his bones into his bloodstream. I don't know that it will help his kidney disfunction at all though. I looked up the drug Lisinopril and see that it is used to treat high blood pressure and is also used to protect the kidneys in diabetic patients. Thank you for your feedback. Praying that the Sensipar helps matters and doesn't contribute to the problems.

Yes. Lisinopril is more commonly used to protect the kidneys of post-transplant patients having sugar issues. Sugar levels are hard to maintain with Prograf, so this was the reasons that my doctors had prescribed this. Hope the Sensipar helps.

I have had elevated Creatine levels about 3 to 4 months before my transplant, and the Kidney Docs think the high levels were due to taking lasix for at least 4 to 5 years to keep my ankles from swelling with fluid. I am on 3 mg of Prograf 2 times daily, and my Creatine level stays around 2.1 to 2.4, I was told not to get concerned about it, but I try hard to stay on top of everything now. My dad was on dialysis for 2 years before he passed away, and I know how difficult that was for him.

My kidney function is starting to decline also after 15 years of prograf. I have been seeing a kidney doctor for about a year and a half, and he says it is something that happens with prograf. I also take Lisinopril to protect my kidneys and also keep my BP low (the primary way my kidney damage is showing itself is in high bp.) My nephrologist said that the things that can be done to try and protect kidneys are: Lisinopril Drink plenty of water Limit salt intake Avoid medications like Advil Keep blood sugar from getting too high Keep cholesterol from getting high Keep BP where it should be (which the lisinopril is doing) Keep prograf level as low as it can be to still do its job And then hope for the best! I take Myfortic and Prednisone in addition to prograf (and therefore can take a lower dose of prograf). My transplant team does not want to switch me off prograf until or unless my kidneys get a lot worse than they are now, as they say some of the otgher meds do not work as well as prograf to prevent rejection.

Thank you for your input. My husband has now also been put on Lisinipril. I hope that helps!

I have been on Lisinipril for nearly a year, and it has helped. I pray that it will help your husband
