Hi, Im wondering Sence the liver grows back, can you donate it a second time?
I know there are many people needing livers and I know I could save lives by donating , but does anyone know how many times you can donate?

Hi Dallas,

I donated my right liver lobe to my father 04-29-10 and the hospital that performed our surgery told me I could donate twice, but I would be a high risk case. Once was enough for me. You should ask your surgeons since every place is different. Hope that helped a bit. Tawnya
I am a Live Liver donor.

I donated my right liver lobe to my father on 4-29-10.

USC University Hospital in California performed our surgery. So far, so good. We are both doing great.

I was told you cannot donate twice. You donate one lobe. The lobe that remains regrows but you do not grow another lobe.
At least that's what I was told.

BTW: My daughter donate to me, almost 3 years now, we're both happy and doing great.

i donated to my mum 3 weeks ago (march 27th). she's got hep c, so i asked our doctor how long would it be till i could donate again. she laughed and said that i couldn't anymore [ i donated my entire right lobe (65%) ]. i think it may depend on how much of your liver you donate the first time.

I don't think it has anything to do with the size. You have two lobes. When you donate one lobe, the one remaining grows, but you still only have one lobe left.
This is why you cannot donate more than once.

Ono is absolutely correct. Your liver only has 2 lobes. When they take 1 (regardless of which side) you regenerate to have a full volume 1 lobe liver. There is no way in which to donate again.

Sorry!
