My doctor wants to switch me from Tacrolimus to Cyclosporine, because I have a lot of side effects from Tacrolimus, he said Cyclosporine has less side effects, and he said some peoples headaches are gone after they switch, he said you are just about at the 2 year post transplant, Is anyone taking Cyclosporine and what are the side effects. Is is worth switching? Do you get more hair growth and gum hyperplasia? How does a doctor decide which drug to put you on?

Thats funny, my doc switched me to Prograf from Cyclosporine because of its side effects! I took Cyclosporine for 19 years, 4 days shy of my 20th anniversary. I had the hair and gum thing but it went away after being on Prograf. With the Prograf, my hair was coming out alot but that has calmed. Overall, I like Prograf better and my liver seems to be liking it too. My numbers haven't been this good in three years! I don't think there is one right drug for everyone; it depends on each person and their situation.

I am also 2 year post transplant and switched to Cyclosporine from Prograf to take the new Incivek triple therapy for HCV. I have had no problems with the Cyclosporine but I didn't have any with the Prograf either. Because of the treatment I am on, I only have to take 25mg twice a day of Cyclosporine. I haven't had any gum problems, only hair loss on Prograf and Cyclosporine. |

I've been switched from Prograf to Cyclosporone for nearly 3 months now, and I'm only at 10 months post tx. I had a lot of trouble with a vicious return of the Hep C virus and the Prograf numbers going high after starting interferon / ribavirin. I don't know that I physically noticed much difference, but I take a couple dozen pills a day and 2 different injections a week so I'd have a hard time telling exactly what the difference was unless it hit me like a sledge hammer. One thing I will say, if you can tolerate the generic cyclo it's a lot cheaper co-pay.
