My husband had a liver transplant on 3-14-12. He has lost 20 lbs because he has been unable to eat since food tastes way too sweet/salty/sour. Has any one else had this problem and if so, when will it go away? Thanks for your help. |

Hi Jacki, I had a similar experience post tx. Food tasted to sweet, too salty or metallic. Also affected was the texture feeling of food. I could smell onions 50 feet away, bananas the same. Pre tx I was 345lb and lost 152 lbs in about 6 months, that was actually a blessing in disguise for me. Slowly I regained taste and smell. This happens to many tx patients due to the effects of the surgery and meds. Now I have gained 40 lbs which I really need to lose but it is not easy. Am almost 6 yrs post tx.

Hi Bob, Thanks for sharing your experience. My husband also had HCC. He felt great before tx, I think that makes this even harder to deal with. We were not prepared for the med side effects. I hope this gets better at 3 months when he can stop the Valcyte and Fluconazole. Do you remember when things started to become more normal? Congrats on 6 years post tx---love to hear that. How do you feel now? |

Hi Jackie, I feel great. Things will begin to improve as his drs change his meds and dosages, the changes depend on how he is doing, labs etc...The main thing is that he has a good liver to work with. The job now is to follow drs directions and be as active as can be, that will also improve with time, and before you know it you'll put all of this behind. When I went home from the hospital I thought that in 3 weeks I would be like new again,...(some patients do!!) I was naive.but between 3 and 6 months I made significant progress. Remember this really is the beginning of new life....enjoy it. We that have had tx are blessed even if we still have some problems. And that is not to minimize the effects of a tx as many patients go through a lot of trouble after tx... I always think of the alternative and thank the LORD., my drs , and my donor/family and my wife.
