I'm on the liver transplant list. I had an umbilicus hernia last year and it wasn't that big, but it was obvious. My surgeon did do the repair surgery and so far so good. They said there is a 30-40% chance that it could return. Right now, I have two hernias, one one each side of my groin and they will not operate on those unless there is an emergency. That kind will come back no matter what, so I have to wait until a few months after a transplant. I suppose all medical teams are different, I was told at first that they didn't want to operate on me, but my surgeon said he would and like I said.... so far, so good. Just have to be careful not to strain.

A heating pad always helps my bad cramps, but I don't know if the heat is good for a hernia. did they give him tramadol for pain?

I have a small hernia and they can be be horribly painful, I find keeping torso muscles as relaxed as possible helped by warmth and sometimes some quite odd positions until the pain reduces. They said a similar thing to me they will put a mesh in whist I am open during the transplant.....if it ever happens!
I hope it eases up for you soon.

Thank yall for your response. he was given tramadol in the hospital once for pain but his liver coordinator took him off of it. He can't lay on either side for very long because of the discomfort and yes sometimes some positions are better than others. Thanks again.

can he lay on his side if he wedges a pillow between the bed and hernia? i did that and it wasn't too bad because there was some support under the hernia. also, does he have any type up support such as a truss or even just some elastic or ace bandage to wrap around it for support?

use ice for pain. sleeping with his head raised is supposed to help.

have you had a dr check it out to make sure it's not strangulated?

you might also try to look into one of those pillows that are shaped more for that type of thing. they make the ones that are more firm and are long and round shaped or something like a body pillow. i would thing something more firm might even bring some more relief. i hope he feels a little better... hernias suck.

We found out exactly what to expect if his hernia should become strangled. It's scary! we go to Houston Jul22 . We hope to be put on the list then. It sure has taken a long time but it hasn"t happened yet.We do have a great coordinator in Nurse Jones and for that I am very thankful.

I hope it all works out. I'm on the waiting list, as well. That's what it is too... "waiting" and then more waiting. It's such a huge plus when you have a good coordinator / nurse. Mine is awesome too.
