Hi All, My name is Brenda and I received a LRD kidney in 2000 from my sister who I am eternally thankful for. SO far I have done very well with a few set-backs here and there. SInce my transplant I have focused my life and career to the transplant field and feel rewarded for oppurtunity to work with such awesome people. I have visited the forum and love reading peoples post. I find great inspiration from people going through that same things that I am. I decided to post becasue I recieved some very unexpected news. I am Pregnant this is 10years post transplant and I am 35years old. I guess I thought that this would never happen but here I am. I hope to here from others that have had babies post transplant and /or are presently pregnant I think that I am over worrying about things but would feel reassured to know that Im not alone. The meds we take have a varity of side effects with little to know research on the fetus. I am thankful that my doctors were so receptive to my pregnancy. When I first found out I was feeling guilty that I would be letting people down or risking the safety of my organ. I have now come to the conclusion that what is meant to be will be and I will leave it in the hands of god to guide me through this process. I hope to hear from others in my situation and find out about their experiences and any advice that you can offer. thanks so much, Brenda |

Congratulations Brenda! I've only had my transplant for 10 months, and am a little too old for a pregnancy so I can't offer any reassurance, but it sounds like you already have a great attitude about handling the pregnancy! Just take care of yourself, follow the dr's orders, and think of the wonderful blessing this baby will be in your life!

Brenda, I can't share this experience with you, but thought I'd tell you about a friend I made on dialysis. She was in her early 50s and her last transplant lasted 23 years. A few years into her transplant she had her daughter, who she describes as her "miracle baby". Her daughter is now in her early 20s, in university and is the light of her mother's life. She had no problems and of course she was closely monitored throughout. Hopes this offers some encouragement, good luck. Kathy.

Brenda, Hello and welcome to TransplantBuddies. I can't give you any "helpful" information about pregnancy, but I can wish you the best, give you support and keep you in my prayers. You've already done the right thing by getting your Tx team involved. I'm sure others can tell you about the risks and rewards. Be well.

thanks Rebecca! Let me tell you that I was in your spot a few years ago. I had my medication changed and keep track of my cylce and went to the ob who could not find anything wrong with me. I finally gave up...and when I least expected it this happen..who would of thought. The only thing that I was so concerned about was that at the time I found out I was pregnant I was on Rapamune and cellcept along with lipid lowering agents this really had me concerned. However I called my clinic immediately afte finding out and they changed my medication (I was only 2-4weeks at the time). SO my advice is dont give up just relax and try not to center your life around making a baby,,I think that when I finally did this >>>the suprise was even grander..Best of luck to you!! I would be glad to keep u updated. Brenda PS. Don't change ur meds if you are on a baby friendly regimen --I wish that I would not have done this. That was my biggest mistake and what has caused the most distress in my finding out. |

Brenda: Welcome to Transplant Buddies! Congratulations on your pregnancy! I am so glad to hear that your transplant team is on board with you and that they are willing work with you to have a beautiful baby. I was not sick or transplanted at the time I got pregnant, but I was 36 and was told I would never conceive. I guess God had other plans. I was on meds for Crohn's at the time - 6-MP (same class as Imuran). I was worried too because that med in particular was dangerous to the baby. Everything worked out fine and Sammy was a healthy 35 weeker. Just keep trusting in God and He will get you and the baby through this. Try not to worry and enjoy all the joys of pregnancy and becoming a parent. I hope you continue to visit. We look forward to getting to know you! God Bless!

Well I just seen the OBGYN today and they did an ultra sound and determined that I am offically 8weeks. I even got a picture and was able to see the heartbeat..talk about awesome. so far everything looks OK the doctor said that I will be seen every month and that we will cordinate with a perinatalogist for closer monotoring of the baby throughout my pregnancy. I almost thought that it was a dream when I seen that heartbeat on the screen there is no way to describe it. Luckily ther has been no morning sickness and the meds they changed me to have not caused any ill effects that I can detect. I will keep you updated. thanks for the support! Brenda |

Congratulations Brenda, I am sorry I have not welcomed you before. Congratulations on your pregnancy. I am so happy you are doing well and have not experienced any ill effects. Would you be able to post your first baby picture for us to see? I had my babies before the days of sonograms and I, for one, would love to see it. Plus, after you have the baby, we would love to see more pictures. I hope you continue to be free of pregnancy symptoms and that you will update us as your pregnancy progresses. All the best, Meagan

I've had 3 pregnancies post transplant. 2 with almost no complications and 1 that caused me to have an antibody mediated rejection which I am still trying to get under control. I've typed this story a few times and haven't ever had much inetrest in it but my youngest is only 6 months old so if you have an questions let me know. |

Brenda, That is so great! I'm glad you're feeling good and that they are going to keep a good eye on you. Keep us posted. Justine, I must have missed your posts! I am always looking for someone who has had babies after transplant. It's so scary when I think about possibly losing my kidney to pregnancy, but the thought of never having a child is just as scary. You have had 3 and to me that's amazing! Hope everything is going ok with you, and things get under control. Were you trying to conceive or were they surprises? Were you able to carry all 3 babies full term? Any info or advice for us trying would be great.

Hi all, I just went to a new OB/GYN today who is experienced in dealing with post-transplant pregnancies. We're not yet ready to start trying but were wanting more information. Almost everything that he said was very positive. He has only had one patient out of many who went into rejection during pregnancy. She had a healthy baby but lost her kidney and had to be re-transplanted. Aside from that case, he gave us a lot of hope about the possibility of pregnancy. I'm curious to know more about the difficulties that you have all had in getting pregnant. Brenda and Rebecca, I saw that you had some troubles. Were they due to your transplants or something else? Justine, I'm amazed by your story! Did you have any fertility challenges along the way? How are you dealing with your rejection episode? I would love to hear more details about your pregnancies! Thank you, Brenda, for your posts! Please keep us updated! Wendy |

To the person who asked about my Creatinine it is great @ 0.9, as are thye rest of my labs which is great and I am feeling much more positive and learning to enjoy it. I can say that I truely forgot what it felt like in to be pregnant. My breast have become to most sensitive part of my body and have enlarged fast which I though happen towardthe end of pregnancy. I am glad to report that it is normal according to my doctor. I aslo found out that it is wise to keep a eye on your progestone level as women with low levels tend to miscarry. My OBGYN is very knowledgeable and Have great confidance in her. two date I have had two US which were both amazing. I acutally got to see the babies heart beat this time. I almost thought it was all a hoax. I have been wondering if the women her who have had babies had then vaginal or c-section? Just curious as to what to look for. Best of luck to all trying to have babies and or have already had them. I would love to hear how your children are doing? Brenda |

I wasn't trying for any of my 3 but I wasn't preventing either. Obviously I am fertile murtle and had no trouble conceiving and no miscariagges. I had my first daughter at 35 weeks the 2nd at 36 weeks and my son at 37 weeks. I had a c-section with the first and vaginal births with the last two. I went into pre-term labor with the first at 33 weeks was in the hospital for a week and then my water broke at exactly 35 weeks. With my second I had a slow leak (thought I was peeing my self) for about a week went in because I was spotting blood and they said it was my water not pee so they delivered me. With my third baby I started spilling protein in my urine and my blood pressure had rose slightly. I was already full term so they delivered me, my hemoglobin was 9 before I deliverd and after it was 7 so I received a blood transfusion. When my son was 3 months old I went in for a regular check up with my nephrologist and I was spilling massive amounts of protein in my urine and my creatinine had gone to 1 when I am usually at .6 or .7 I had a biopsy and the doctor told me I had an antibody mediated rejection probably caused from being exposed to antibodies from being pregnant but the the blood transfusion could also have been the cause but not nearly as likely. In a bit of a hurry sorry I didn't have time to proof read... |

Justine, your story gives us such hope! How long after your transplant did you have your first baby? Did you adjust your medications prior to becoming pregnant? Did the babies have any complications or side effects from your medications after birth? Did you breast-feed them at all? What are the doctors doing to combat your rejection? How are you doing now? I'm sorry for all of the questions, but I'd love to hear more! Brenda, I am sincerely praying for you and your baby. My doctor told me that 50-60% of post-transplant babies are delivered via C-section, but as Justine's story shows us, vaginal births are possible. Please keep us posted as your pregnancy progresses! Thank you both! Wendy |

HI all, I heard from my OB today and progestone level is good but iron is low so I am going to supplement . My vitamin D is also low so I will have to supplement that also and of course I need an anbx for the ever dreaded UTI. As for me I feel great no morning sickness to this point with only the occasional bout of nausea. I am 9weeks today so far so good. Justine I hope you are doing well. Thanks for all the information regarding your children and thier births. My doctor say that I could have a vaginal delivery but since I also have a hernia I could opt for a c-section and have the hernia repaired at the same time but I dont want to be out when the baby is born..desicions..desicions!! im just glad to be to this point... will keep u all updated thanks again for the support..I really appreciate it. Brenda, I happened upon this thread when googeling Imuran and anemia. Anyways, I really wanted to let you know that I have had two "successful" pregnancies and two beautiful daughters. I got pregnant with my first daughter 2 and a half years post transplant under the supervision of a team of Dr.'s. I got pre-eclampsia and delivered 6 weeks early, but she was so healthy--she only spent 4 days in the hospital and is very healthy, vibrant, energetic and smart as a whip. She is now 4 years old and reading, writing, and just a delight to me and my husband. I really wanted another child though--I couldn't stand the thought of having just one baby, so, I went back to the Dr. and he gave me the go ahead. We got pregnant sooner than we would have liked--when my first was just 6 months old, but I know have a healthy little 3 year old who is best friends with my 4 year old. She was born 9 weeks early due to pre-eclampisa and spent 4 weeks in the hospital--but she is now very healthy with absolutely no health problems and is developing normally. As for my health, my creatinine levels are the same as before any of my pregnancies, and my kidney is still kicking! I am anemic, but that is not related to my pregnancies (I've been battling anemia since well before my transplant). Anywho--I've had my transplant for 8 years now, and it seems that I'll have it for many more years. Anywho, I hope that helped! If you have any questions or just want to to talk shoot me an e-mail! |

Candace, your story is so wonderful! It gives so much hope to those of us who are wanting to pursue pregnancy post-transplant! Brenda, that's awesome that your doctors could repair your hernia at the same time as your C-section. I have a hernia, too. Would you have to be completely unconscious for them to do this? Please keep us posted. I hope that everything is going well! Wendy |

Thank you Candace for sharing your story im am feeling very good about my pregnancy now. When I found out I was very scared and unsure of what to expect. I have been doing alot of reading, praying, and most of all taking extra care in my health to do my part in this pregnancy. Wendy as for your question I think that answer is yes because to have a hernia repair you must be under general is what I was told. I am hoping that I can have an epidural first and let them perform the c-section and then place me under the general anesthesia for the hernia repair. Once I find out for sure I post what the doctor tells me. well be intouch soon Brenda |

Hi Brenda, It sounds like your pregnancy is progressing well! That's wonderful! Yeah, avoiding carbs would be a killer. Are you having blood sugar issues, or is that to avoid gaining too much weight? Are they concerned about the protein spillage, and do they have any ideas about what's causing that? That's great that you are not having morning sickness! I'm so glad that you are doing well! Keep us posted! Wendy |

Thanks Wendy, I'm not sure why the protein is in there unless it is a side effect of one of my meds. I know that I have had it in the past due to rapamune when I was taking it. I have no DM that I know of but have gained 8lbs in 4weeks I think that is to much this early and now am having to think of alternatives to my eating habits. I usually have crakers at breakfast time to take my meds. then I usually have a sandwich and fruit for lunch and then dinner (pasta etc) family meal type stuff. then more crackers with night time meds. any suggestions. I have tried yogurt but crackers seem to work best the cyclosporine has a bad after taste that I belch up which seems to be the mainstay these days..lol Brenda |

Hi Brenda, I'm so happy for you and your hubby that you're feeling well and the baby is growing and everything looks good. It's been a long time since I was pregnant (25 yrs) and I have to say it was one of the best times in my life and I enjoyed both of my pregnancies so much. Take the time to feel the wonder of life and having a living little being to nurture and love. The closeness is something that stays with you after birth and forever. How exciting that you might find out the sex of the baby. Boy or girl ( I have one of each) you'll love them the same. Wishing you continued good health and keep posting. Robin

Brenda, Congratulations on your pregnancy! I'm a kidney/pancreas transplant recipient since July 7, 1992 (almost 18 yrs) and have had 2 pregnancies and 2 healthy children. My daughters are now 6 and 9 yrs old. I've been involved in the transplant field since my transplant and now work with the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry in Philadelphia. We have research (since 1991) about transplant recipients becoming pregnant and how they have done, how the babies have done and the medications taken. If you have any questions for me, I'll be happy to tell you about my experience. Faith |

faith, I am also in the field of transplant as a coordinator and love my job. I fine it more a part of my life and daily routine then a job that is for sure. Being pregnant has made me very thankful for all the I have. I have recently developed a pain in my tailbone region that actually goes to my right leg, I am wondering if this is siatica? Was wonder if you are any of the many members would have a clue? I don't feel that the baby is big enough to make this the case since I feel that it is too early? I will tell everyone one thing though...being pregnant @ 35 is a world od difference then when I was 18 that for sure. I have been left to wonder how something the size of a plum can cause such havoc..lol! I am so excited and can't wait till this child is born. thank you for all the support and well wish.PS for any thinking of becoming pregnant remember to watch the salt..I'm having period of ankle swelling and it is uncomfortable. Lesson defintely learned.. Sincerely, Brenda |

Brenda, There is so much to be thankful for! And not only have we been blessed with renewed health because of a transplant but we are now able to experience the wonderful gift of being a mother. I never thought I would have children because of my health. And, I know how you feel about a job working with transplant recipients. It is wonderful to do something you love and care so much about. I love my job at the Transplant Pregnancy Registry and helping provide information to those interested in the results of our amazing research. I hope you are feeling better and am not familiar with that issue you're having. I hope others who read this will post there thoughts as well. It's nice sharing. Faith |

Hi all, Well April 27th was my 10year kidney transplant anniversary and on April 28th I passed the AANP Boards to become a nurse practitioner. I really feel so unbelievablly blessed. This may sound silly but after I got the results of my test I broke down and sobbed for a long time. It was not becasue I was sad but actually overwhelmed with everything that has been going on. I mean for the first time in a long time I feel that I am on target with my life and now I have this baby to loook forward to. I think sometimes I feel guilty for all the good that God has done for me. I hope that I can give back for all I have recieved..sorry to go on so but I had to share with someone. My family thinks that I'm to sappy..lol PS: I see baby doctor on May 10 will have update of any changes..thanks for the support. Brenda Dexter} |

Hi Brenda, congratulations on your pregnancy & I hope all goes really well for you. I had 2 babies, 5 years & 7 years after my transplant. All went well with both despite some very high blood pressure towards the end the first time. The doctors said the first would probably be born very prem, round 27 weeks, & they gave me worse case scenarios of all the possible defects. I was determined that I would prove them wrong & that this wouldn't happen. Both were induced at 38 weeks & were otherwise normal births, no problems. They were small babies 5lb12 & 4lb11, so not too tiny. They are now 19 & 21 years old. It is becoming more normal for transplant recipients to have babies now, but back then they were not very sure about it & tended not to encourage it so much. They told me to wait for 5 years after the transplant before having a baby. Now I think they say a year, don't they? Look after yourself & your baby! Tedge

HI all, Sorry I havent posted lately but I have been soo busy getting ready for baby!!! Working, WOrking , and working!! Ok last appt with baby doctor 6/7 said everything was going great...I'm having a little baby boy!!! By US he is 14oz with no visible issues. his heart, lungs, liver, and of course kidneys are all developing wonderful. Thank god no issues. As for me I have had the swelling im legs but have started wearing compression stockings to help with this. My blood pressure has been stable and am monitoring daily. the only real complaint that I have is my upper back spaming. I hate to bend or walk for prolonged amounts of time. Otherwise I have no complaint and am so very thankful for this gift. It is amazing that my kidny function has stated so good creat 0.7 and my lipids and cholesterol have both decrease. I feel good most of the time and have recently been shopping like a fool. I love it! I wish the best to al;l and hope that this find you well. Will see doctor again july 7th and will make sure to post sooner. Brenda |

Hey Brenda, ah Im so glad to hear you are doing so well! I have been following your posts religiously! I have had a kidney pancreas transplant and actually found out I was pregnant not too long after you started posting. i really wanted to say something but I was too scared as it was before the 12 week mark and scan. I am 18 weeks tomorrow. Things are going really well for me too (please god it stays like that) and I had an anomoly scan at 16 weeks to measure all the baby's organs etc and everything looks normal and Im hopefuly having another at 20 weeks. It really does feel a miracle that so much has gone wrong in my body and now it is doing everything it should be for the little baby! My blood pressure is on the low side of normal so v good, creatinine 0.6, HBA1C 4.2%. I have also had the leg swelling and my eyes have some more new vessels so I have had a couple of laser sessions in the past 6 weeks. i am hoping it will all settle down after baby is born though. Please keep updating us Brenda! My drs have said they will start worrying more towards the end of the 2nd trimester and into the 3rd as the baby gets bigger and starts compressing things - although Im massive now!! Take care and hope to catch up soon, Carolinex

Hi Brenda, ah Im so glad things are going so well and the pictures of your little boy are gorgeous! You must be getting very excited now! I am 24 weeks now and am having a few problems. I'm going to post seperately too on this. There was a bit of a panic last week as my blood pressure was rising and I had 3 pluses of protein in my urine and it came back from the lab with corresponding high levels. I had this repeated on Friday and the dipstick showed negative for protein! My doctor thought maybe the sample taken previously had been mixed up with someone elses! I just had a phonecall from him though to say that although the dipstick showed up negative, the sample came back from the lab with a lot of protein in it - v confusing! He isnt sure what to believe so I am going again tomorrow morning to get rechecked and probably to do a 24 hour urine collection at home on Wednesday. My blood pressure was also high Friday but has settled down a bit over the weekend. I have been told that if it does look like I am getting pre eclampsia, they will try to treat it and give me steroids to develop the baby's lungs. I just hope so much I wont have to be delivered too early as I understand the chances of survival now are low. I have also started to be quite sick again and can't walk very much as my sacroiliac joint keeps popping up in my pelvis. Ive got an eye infection at the moment too but don't think I am allowed antibiotic drops so have just been bathing it with salty water. I don't mind any of these things though, I just hope the baby will be okay and will be stay where it is for a good while yet! On the plus side I have been feeling lots of movements which is so lovely. So good to get an update from you and please let us know how it is all going, lots of love Carolinexxx
