Hi there everyone, hope you are all keeping well. I haven't posted for a long time but I always check in and see how everyone is doing. I had my kidney and pancreas transplant in March 2007 at the John Radcliffe hospital in the UK when I was 26 years old. Last year, my husband and I started discussing with my doctors the possibility of having a baby. I changed my medication from Cellcept (Mycophenolate) to Immuran (Azathiaoprine). I was told that I may have alot of problems with my fertility and that my fallopian tubes might be blocked because of all the surgery I had had in that area (I had complications post tx and had 2 further operations followed by a native nephrectomy last year). I am so happy to say though that a miracle has happened and it only took me 3 and a half weeks to find out I was pregnant! We feel truly blessed. I am now 13 weeks pregnant and have longed to say something on this site before now but have been too anxious. I have had on and off spotting and this has left me v concerned but I had my 12 week scan last Monday and all looks good, the baby is measuring 5 days older than it should be and it has a good strong heartbeat. My creatinine has gone down from 0.8 to 0.5 and my HBa1c is 4.2%. My gastroparesis has improved alot and I can eat foods I haven't been able to eat for years! The only problem I have is that my retinopathy has got a bit worse and I have to have some more laser treatment next Wednesday. I think both my husband and I are still in shock and I am so scared that something will go wrong but we are hoping and praying that things will be ok. I think there have only been 3 spk transplant babies in the UK so far so I am hoping to bump up those statistics! I would love to hear other peoples stories of pregnancy post transplant and will keep you updated of what is happening to me. Take care, Carolinexx

Congratulations Caroline!

Here's hoping that all goes smooth and well.

Am I correct in assuming that aside from imuran, you are on prograf?

Hi Wendy, thank you for your message! I had a scan in the week, baby was fine - they couldnt take a picture this time round because baby was so active and at one stage was standing on its head! Heartbeat was good too. They found that I have a heamotoma in my uterus (I think thats a blood clot). They said it was so tiny that it couldnt even be measured and it should go away of its own accord and it is the likely cause of the spotting. It was a relief to finally have a reason and hopefuly it will be ok. I had to have some more laser on my eye last Wednesday as they had got a little worse since falling pregnant but again I am hoping that has stabilised now. I am seeing transplant consultant, diabetes consultant and obstetrician all together on Tuesday. I was 14 weeks yesterday! Hope you are all keeping well, take care. xx

Hi John, thanks for your best wishes!

Wendy - I'm not having any insulin resistance, its actually been great and my ave blood sugar/Hba1c is 4.2%. Thats the best its been since I was about 11 years old!
The reason I still see the diabetes consultant is because I still have alot of the complications of the diabetes: proliferative retinopathy, gastroparesis, hypotension (the low blood pressure one, think thats right!), autonomic and peripheral nerve damage etc. I wasn't actually seeing the diabetes consultant until I started the process of wanting to try to get pregnant. She has been really good and I think as I am the first at my hospital to have a kidney and pancreas transplant and be pregnant, everyone is v interested to see how it goes!
I hope everything is going well with your healthxx

Hi Caroline - I hope this message isn't too far away fro your last post , but as I was doing some trans education last week , I learnt alot regarding pregnancy and transplantation!

Strange maybe coming from a male , but life is full of irony! ;)

Anyway , there are a few issues you will need to be wary of, that I was told of , not predominantly from the immunosuppressants , but a few physical issues during birth , and late stage carrying.
I won't post , as I would hate to give incorrect , or misleading info , but make sure you drill you trans nurse heavily to gain everything you need to know!

If he/she say there is nothing to really know about , CHANGE that nurse immediately!
No need to be frightened , or worry uneccessarily , however , better to go in fully loaded , so you will understand what you need to do , and expect , when the time comes! ...And good luck :-)

Hey Ronzo, thanks for your post! My drs have gone through risks with me and have said that things get a bit more concerning towards the end of the 2nd trimester and into the 3rd as I and the baby get bigger. I know there are some issues around my transplanted kidney specifically with compression and they are going to start doing regular utlrasounds of the kidney and blood vessels to check flow etc. I am much more likely to need a ceaserean and they will be going in through my transplant scar for easier access and a better view. Any more info you have I would be grateful to hear! I know my drs are being very cautious and I am currentl seeing my transplant consultant, diabetes consultant and obstetrician all together so thats joined up. Thank you for the good luck too, i will keep posting. Caroline
