It's been a long and convoluted story as I am sure most of you must be familiar with, but after FOUR false alarms where I was told the pancreas was mine, only to lose it at the last minute for some reason or the other, I am finally 6 wks post pancreas transplant! Had the kidney in July of 07 and the pancreas the 16th of this past June!! One small hiccup this past week, slightly elevated amylase and lipase, a 3 day trip for SoluMedrol and Thymol and we are working as good as new! My prograf levels need to be a little higher than they have been the last couple of years with my very well behaved kidney (from my husband!) and it is trickier to keep them higher without fluctuating, but we are working it out. Now if I just don't go completely bald, it will be perfect! Unbelievable blood sugars, I have NEVER seen them this low (normal!). I think I have eaten pancakes twice a week since I got the pancreas! My favorite meal!

For all of those still waiting, my prayers and thoughts are with you, it is a tough row to hoe, but it may come when you least expect it! Stay as healthy as possible and be ready for YOUR call!

Hi and congratulations on the new transplant. I am 8 wks post op K/P transplant. I'm curious about your elevated amylase and lipase. Mine have been elevated since the surgery and after slowly dropping ,have gone somewhat higher. They have stabilized at elevated level past 2 weeks. I have had pancreas and kidney biopsy. No signs of rejection so no treatment has been recommended,What was the rational for your 3 day treatment ? I'm concerned and for now just watching weekly labs.Thank you for any info you can share!

Congratulations Freda. Woo Hoo! I am now a bit over 2 years post pancreas (kidney in 02). My last a1c was 5.1%. Isn't it wonderful. I can feel your joy. I still feel it every day! I've had some bumps in the road with the kidney, but the pancreas just seems to keep on ticking. The funny thing is that I now have a bit of reactive hypoglycemia. Something a bit too sweet, and I drop. It's so much fun only testing for fun!

Congrats again.

Renee,
My amylase and Lipase were well with in normal after the surgery. I picked up a fever and had pain at the surgery site. Amylase was 173 and LIpase 198. I also had a blood sugar that morning of 209. All these combined were enough for my transplant Dr. to go ahead and treat. He is very proactive and prefers to treat early on, especially with the fever and pain since the enzyme levels were not terribly high. Unfortuneately, my blood sugars were averaging around 112 and now two days after being out of the hospital, they have not gone down much below 130 with a few 160's and 170's thrown in 1 to 2 hours post prandial. The Dr.'s keep telling me the blood sugars will continue to drop, but I am understandably nervous about this. I know with the high levels of SoluMedrol that they are going to be higher for a bit, but am still a little paranoid about it.

I hope this helps at least some, I know with our meds we are all so very individual and I would suspect the same would be true of our creatinine and enzyme levels. As long as your pancreas is working well, your blood sugars are normal and you have no fever or pain, I would try to relax about the higher levels, especially if a biopsy showed negative. Of course that is much easier said than done, I know I tend to want everything to be perfect the way it was before all this happened. Probably NOT going to happen so I'm destined to be nervous and paranoid!! Lol!

Freda, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm trying to not be too concerned since my amylase, lipase and creatinine have stabilized, Creatinine has been 1.2-1.3 for past 3 weeks. It had been as low as 0.8 about 4 weeks post-op. Wondering if extra hydration will get it to drop. Just how much fluid do you drink daily? I try but think I should probably be drinking more.

I had a k/p transplant 6 months ago, last month my doctor admitted me because my lipase level was over 800. After 3 days of a steroid IV it dropped to 320. Since then it has steadily gone up to 340 to 380 and now 470. I pray that it is not a sign of rejection.

Steve:

Welcome to Transplant Buddies! I am a double lung transplant recipient so I am not too knowledgeable about Kidney/pancreas transplant. I pray that you are not having rejection either. That rejection word sure is scary.

I am glad that you found us. This is a great place for support and friendship. I hope you continue to visit. We look forward to getting to know you.

God Bless!

Renee,
As far as fluid intake goes, I commit myself to drinking the min. of 64 oz per day and sometimes I feel like I an drowning in it! Before the transplant (kidney) it was always watch your intake, you'll swell!! Now the more hydrated I stay the happier the kidney is and the better it works. My creatinine levels are always better when I am hydrated. Always. (also makes it so much easier to draw my blood!)

I try to keep at least half of my intake water, but on days I am just watered out, i will use those little single serve packs that you add to a water bottle for some flavor and also keep a supply of G2 on hand, I love the stuff even better than the regular!
